[I]Where have my shortcuts gone?

I need some advice on the variety of stupidities a luser may commit, and
how he may uncommit them.

When I exited from Thunderbird this evening, I was presented with the
image of a landscape, all pristine -- all my shortcuts had disappeared.
(Yes, I'm still using Win-Doze XP, dammit!)

I tried rebooting the computer, but no joy. Any help in recovering my
shortcuts will be muchly appreciated.
