I was. A bunch of us here liked the show, Saban was already making another
season, it was just Fox Kids who puled the plug. I don't remember why at the
moment. Were the ratings too low?
> The monsters were too obviously CGI,
True
> and most of the time the Armor was falling off the actors faces.
Huh? When did this happen?
>The series did show promise, but unfortunately, didn't follow through on
it.
Im pretty sure it wasn't the shows fault. But I could be wrong. You think if
they were already filming the new series, and making toys for it, the
ratings couldn't have been THAT bad.
The faceplates falling off is most noticeable on Deirdre. Just check her out
as/after her 'morphing' sequence. But also, Angus's helmet could be seen to
be off kilter at times. It just depended on the episode I guess.
About the ratings, they may have started filming the new series before
getting the overall ratings for the season. If they were low, FK might have
not considered it worth the risk after VR Troopers, Masked Rider and
BeetleBorgs, all Saban live action shows, panned.
Going OT here, am I the only one who think BeetleBorgs could have been SO
DAMN GOOD, if only they had not had those stupid monsters in it, and they
hadn't had ten/twelve year old kids as the main characters? Imagine a whole
season of PR where the whole team is Justin's age in PRT... <shudder>... and
you should see what I'm saying.

What? No Rohan Apple Pie?
Actually, I LOVED BeetleBorgs! There was something about it that made it quite
distinct among all of Saban's series... and I was truly disappointed when it
was cancelled to make way for Mystic Knights.
>If they were low, FK might have
>not considered it worth the risk after VR Troopers, Masked Rider and
>BeetleBorgs, all Saban live action shows, panned.
VR Troopers was cancelled because its lead actors all wanted to be lead go to
pursue their careers elsewhere. I believe it ended on rather good terms.
MR ended when, from what I've heard, TJ Roberts left the show once the second-
syndicated-only- season had wrapped production.
BBM was actually doing BETTER than PRT and PRiS to begin with, as one of the
highest-rated shows on the network, but Saban apparently felt the series was
too much of a financial drain. Almost all of the show was US effects and
battles, and they were even beginning to make their own modifications on the
Japanese costumes and accessories. The toys sold SO well that Bandai continued
the toyline into Beetleborgs Force, but without an accompanying series, it
tanked.
MK just ended because Fox Kids didn't want to continue it. It certainly ended
on what you would classify as an... "Open" finale. All this set-up, Rohan
getting his Battle Fury forged... And it just ends with Mider and Maeve's
master poised to take control of the kingdom?
>Going OT here, am I the only one who think BeetleBorgs could have been SO
>DAMN GOOD,
You've got your tenses confused, I'm afraid. ;-)
BBBB might have been crap, but BBM _WAS_ so damn good. Nobody disses BBM here
on my watch. I maintain I would rather watch Metallix than a number of PR
incarnations. Best all-around scripting an entire season had had for a Saban
program up until that time. Set up "Rise of the Astral Borgs" in the third
episode with one of the most subtle little lines during one of Art and Les'
brotherly spats.
Plus they finally got it through their heads on how to characterize the kids.
(And Beetleborgs is not off-topic, all of the Saban American Tokusatsu programs
are covered by the group charter.)
> if only they had not had those stupid monsters in it,
Okay, that's it.
<It's a Wonderful Life>
Out you pixies go, through the door or out the window!
</Wonderful Life>
Nobody insults the House Monsters on my watch, either. Sure, they were played
as being genuinely scary during BBBB, and that's just retarded, but BBM got it
right. THEY'RE the guys who are in on this whole thing. They don't really want
to eat the kids, they're just going through the motions because it's expected
of them. The House Monsters and the Crustaceans ARE a good percentage of
Beetleborgs, for me. Besides, how can you not love "Mega Spectra Beetleborgs,"
with Fangula's sudden, up-until-now unrevealed psychic powers? And when Mums
expresses disbelief that he's NEVER used them up until now, when they could
have used them to their disadvantage in the middle of so many scrapes, pretty
much speaking for the whole audience- "Hey, you never asked."
("I don't see you as Mega." "Well, what do you see?" "ROMANCE!")
They even made fun of the Cubs; albeit that tends to be a pretty cheap shot in
general. BBBB acted like it had a good premise. BBM acknowledges it has the
most insane premise for a television series in the world, like the later MMPR
seasons, and just... MOVES ON from there. Also didn't hurt that they had Doug
Sloan and a few others from PR working on the show for Metallix. Worth
Keeter... Did Judd do an episode, or am I imagining?
>and they
>hadn't had ten/twelve year old kids as the main characters? Imagine a whole
>season of PR where the whole team is Justin's age in PRT... <shudder>... and
>you should see what I'm saying.
BBBB really mismanaged the way it characterized its principle characters, as it
did most everything... It tried to write the kids the same way Justin was
written for most of early PRT. As being the "audience," of the show, and thus
super-annoying, yet written as being the most lovable little moppets in the
world. They do this in most Sentai's, too. Judd's PRT and BBM handled them much
better than that, as just being littler characters. It junked the comic shop,
the fact that they SHOULD be going to school, nearly all of the supporting cast
and non-Hillhurst premise... And by cutting off the excess fat, the leaner
program just CLICKED.
PRiS made the misstep of keeping its heroes in school when we knew it was
impossible for them to still be regularly attending. BBM just didn't care. It
barely acknowledges the kids have homes or lives of their own.
Plus, by the final episodes Drew and Roland were clearly entering puberty. Look
at how TALL Roland had gotten! Or listen to their voices! They really weren't
the little kids they had started out as anymore. Well, Jo was, but she got a
younger actress.
(Sorry about snapping at you like that, there are only about five other really
vocal BBM fans in here, and we have to spend a lot of time handling the
"ignorant masses." ;-) )
Umm, who do I have to talk to so that becomes a reality? :) I like that plan.

I enjoyed both a lot. True, BBM was better, but BBBB was pretty good.
The main thing I *detested* about the show, was when a person (usually
delivery man of some sort) would be confronted by a monster and his
pants would fall down. It was funny about 3 times. After that it got
annoying as hell. After a while I got used to the monsters and they
didn't bug me as much. And I definitely preferred the original "Jo" -
she had more attitude. Van and Trip were about as likable as getting
your fingernails ripped off one by one. But, everything else was great.
What I miss more than anything when the show ended, was seeing what
would happen with Les Fortunes. Last we saw he walked out on Nukus. I
wonder if he would've helped Art & the Borgs afterwards, go back to
jail, or rejoin Nukus. Guess we'll never know.

Sorry, no can do. I watched maybe two eps of Mystic Knights and was so turned
>The way both BBBB and BBM both
>used the house monsters as comic relief just *BUGGED* me.
I think you have to look at this more from the context of what they compare to,
though. How many other supporting cast members have actually worked on a Saban
show, especially the comic relief? Percy? Whatsherface on MR? Vann and Tripp?
They couldn't even manage to give Bulk and Skull worthy material most of the
time, and they were about the best comic relief we'd ever had. The House
Monsters had a relevance to the plot which Bulk and Skull had lacked since Zeo,
back when they were integral cast members. I missed that, especially during
Turbo and Space. And their humor had a self-referential quality and an
intelligence often lacking in Saban programs.
I respect what you're saying, of course, I just... I had similar feelings
myself back during BBBB, before I really... I dunno, "felt" the characters the
way I do now.
>IMO, I think the
>series would have been better as a whole if they'd not have bothered with
>the house monsters or Flabber at all.
I can understand Flabber getting on people's nerves, especially his roundabout
manner of doing things, but... Again, compare him to what else we had.
Professor Hart? King Lexian? Zordon? I mean, geez, I love Zordon too, but the
man had no personality whatsoever. He was a great sage. Flabber was like
Ninjor, but... Funnier.
(And don't think I'm dissing Ninjor, anyone, Ninjor's the man.)
Flabber oozed CHARISMA. That's a nice quality to have in a mentor. And he got
good character development. I loved the one episode with the matter
tele-transporter, and about the ONLY time they explored the fact that Flabber
is confined to Hillhurst.
"What is the ONE place I have most wanted to go in all my life?" It seemed...
Charming to me that this magical, child-like 7th-dimensional phasm wanted to
see the local jaunt of his young friends more than any place else on Earth.
They never did anything more with that. I mean, Zordon HAD a body once. Flabber
can't exist in our universe anywhere outside of this old mansion.
>The one 'high' point for me (that

I think Rise of the Astral Borgs is probably one of the best multi-part
episodes ever produced by Saban. Plausible, good technobabble, GREAT power
struggle, on par with Green with Evil, or the whole "Ninjor/Falconzord/Pink
Power Coin" arc in season three. One step forward can mean five steps back for
the other guys. I still can't imagine how in the world they managed to get it
past the folks at Fox Kids. I mean, just conceptually-
"Yeah, we want to do a ten-part miniseries that also directly ties into the
following six or so episodes which'll close out the season. Anybody mind?"
They didn't even really ANNOUNCE they were going to do something like that!
>Now, you say there was a second series of MR? Since living in the UK blows
>chunks, I may or may not have seen it. Can you give me some idea of what
>happened in it?
Ummmm... Well, after Masked Rider ended on FK they continued the program in
syndication in a form of "second season," further adapted Kamen Rider Black RX
along with some other Kamen Rider program for filler footage... I'm not quite
certain in what capacity it was used, though, since I never got to watch it.
The program ended for good with a usual Kamen Rider uber-crossover, with pretty
much every Rider ever coming to aid Dex. I think here they were called the
"Intergalactic Rider Corps." I know this excites Derik, since it implies
there's another peacekeeping force in the PR universe besides the various teams
and classifications of Rangers. And the Intergalactic Police Force, the agency
which employs Blue Senturion units.
>Also, were the episodes of MKoTNN you mention, with Rohan

Yes, those episodes aired. Maeve's teacher arrives (well, actually, Maeve GOES
to her, but she arrives on the show), Maeve calls upon a henchman she has been
grooming for her over the years named Lugad, who she swears is not yet ready
for Maeve to take into battle. He remains a child, mentally. Maeve ignores
this, and spends the next six episodes using Lugad in the hopes of destroying
the Mystic Knights.
Mider plays both sides, as if you'd expect anything less. Garrett returns with
another Battle Bike he got from the father of the princess he'd been escorting
back. And Rohan seeks out the man that forged the original Mystic Armor to
create his Battle Fury armor.
It also uses a LOT of Star Wars dialogue. And, needless to say, the biggest
revelation of all, which requires a bit of spoiler space

We discover Maeve and Lugad both bear Rohan's symbol of destiny, as they are
all blood relation. Yes, Rohan is her son, and Lugad his brother. He was stolen
from her by Cathbad when just a baby, and Lugad was left somewhere safe where
she could eventually reclaim him - in the care of her trusted mentor, where he
would be trained as her own personal chief warrior. Star Wars ripoff!
The Mighty Dreganta's prophecy is twisted by Maeve as implying that he will
bring peace to Kells by helping her to conquer it once and for all. Maeve is
eventually defeated and banished (the final ep appropriately titled as such,)
and Mider and her teacher decide they'll have a go.
Oh, and Lugad leaves, because he feels he can't remain with them as the
creature he has become. Or something. I think he was set to become Battle
Thunder's Liam, Mystic Knight of Swamp.

MK was a good show but had its faults with the CGI. As corny as the
un-morphed battles were, I enjoyed those awhole lot better. Mk had
interesting plots I really enjoyed. It makes me mad the way they ended it.
Turning Maeve into a CGI monster for awhile was their mistake, then they
leave it perfectly open for Maeve's teacher to take over. I want more
Dammit!!

I pretty much agree with you on all accounts there, Clfunaro. I really
enjoyed BBBB and BBM. My attention started to sway from Turbo just a little
and I gave BBBB a second chance and really enjoyed its run. I for one did
like the house monsters. Their interaction together was great and who could
forget Flabber? My only problem was little ghoul. I didn't care much for
her at all.
The Astro Ranger saga was my favorite mini series throughout it. The new
Astro borgs were sweet and we got to see the humorous interactions between
Les and Art Fortunes. The Shadow Borg saga had something too but Josh
reminded me too much of Tommy and at that time, I was sick and tired of him.

Just two episodes I remember had something to do with Angel Grove High.("A

special but I didn't think about it much. At least by "Carlos on Call" we

Don't even try. Not unless you want to make the stockholders of Bayer very
VERY happy.
A-HA!!! I've figured out why Rita always had severe headaches! She was
constantly trying to understand George Rodd!!
Very wrong. Take it from a person who has been watching sentai all her life
and kept up with the Amercian "Tokusatsu" shows, plus has full access as well as
understands both very well, that is NOT the case as far as Sentai goes. They
generly do not do it that way in this genery, there have been some VERY FEW
instances were Sentai has gone down that road BUT for the most part they don't.
If you look at the history of Sentai plots and characters in general most do not
take this approach to their series AND try to stay away from the "lovable little
moppets in the world" approach since it DOESN'T work and most young Japanese
boys don't care for them. Plus the few times they did give some characters this
approach they don't tent go over board with the "lovable little moppets" act as
their American counterparts tent to over do it. ^_^
