OK, this lit a buzzer in the back of my brain because it sounds a whole
lot like what happened to Hardwire, an enemey of Steel from a ways
back. Hardwire was some guy who got crippled and volunteered to perform
services for the government (read: whack Steel) if they reconstructed
him. (They made him into a cyborg with a deathwish, but hey--that's
what you get for not reading the fine print.)

Hardwire's story isn't nearly so important as the fact that it got the
attention of Steel's foster nephew, Tyke. Tyke (real name *still*
unrevealed) had lost the use of his legs in STEEL #4, and went as far as
to reveal Steel's secret identity to Hardwire's handlers because he
thought he could get the same operation as Hardwire. Why, you ask, did
Tyke care so little for John's secret? Because he'd just prevented Tyke
from getting *another* of Steel's enemies--Hazard--to fix his legs in
STEEL #19.

In other words, is Tyke found out about this Stable business, he'd sign
up in a Jersey minute. And, even though Tyke was taken from the Irons
family's custody in STEEL #27, that would certainly get Steel's
attention.

I've been hearing there's gonna be a Steel appearance in SUPERGIRL
pretty soon anyway, but I thought this might be worth bringing up.

Next issue, in fact. And having read a preview copy at Wondercon, I
can assure you that no members of the Steel cast save for Steel
himself show up, and no Steel danglers are addressed. The very
self-contained story is very interesting and deliberately thought
provoking though, and it'll be interesting to see what folk's
reactions to it are.

Yup Jimmy, it'll be in next issue, and the one after as well. I can't wait for
this. Godd STEEL art. I long seen thing for sure! (well JLA had some good pix)

As in #23? Huh. How'd I miss that?

I didn't expect that to happen. (Even Louise Simonson didn't bother
cleaning up a lot of Steel danglers, and she had 31 months to do it.
And PAD has better things to do.) I just thought that, if PAD's got
this organization that's reconstructing desperate paraplegics, he ought
know that there's a perfectly good desperate paraplegic in limbo at the
Super-offices.

If that just happened to get a *second* Steel appearance in SUPERGIRL,
well...*I* wouldn't complain. (Wink, wink.)

Does that mean you won't be satisfied with next issue having Steel both
eat a Hostess Fruit Pie *and* make a reference to Steel 3:16?

Oh, I guess I should have spoilered that....of course, it not being true
is usually a good reason not to. :-)

Oh, Tom, you mean that the preview you saw didn't have that revised
sequence we did included in it? ;)

Robin.

Nope. Just issue #23, Leonard does draw a mighty fine Steel though.

After having seen photocopies of the art for myself during Leonard's
recent Ottawa visit, do not expect me to argue against this.

None of that's Steel's style, though. If he weren't being cancelled,
I'd have a whole other subset of junk I'd make Steel do.

Don't play games with me. Steel's a Twinkie man and a football fan, and
we all know it.

You know, one of the classic questions some writers ask themselves
to see how real a character they've created is "What's
his or her favorite kind of ice cream?"

Never before have I encountered the question "What's his favorite
Hostess snack?"

You *obviously* didn't read enough comics in the 70s, David. <g>
