If Nietzsche were alive today, what sort of music would he label as "life-affirming"?

Most music today tends to be some whining supplicant that cries about
his love affairs or his troubles. I'd be interested in the artists and
songs that are "life affirming."

not sure about 'life affirming' but always thought this song was
particularly Nietzschean, in terms of references to self-overcoming and
transcendence through suffering, or something ... anyway ... I like the
singing too ...

Cuts You Up
Peter Murphy

I find you in the morning
after dreams of distant signs
you pour yourself over me
like the sun through the blinds
you lift me up
and get me out
keep me walking
but never shout
hold the secret close
I hear you say

You know the way
it throws about
it takes you in
and spits you out
when you desire
to conquer it
to feel you're higher
to follow it
you must be clean
with mistakes
that you do mean
move the heart
switch the pace
look for what seems out of place

Yeah on and on it goes
calling like a distant wind
through the zero hour we'll walk
cut the thick and break the thin
no sound to break no moment clear
when all the doubts are crystal clear
crashing hard into the secret wind

You know the way
it twists and turns
changing colour
spinning yarns
you know the way
it leaves you dry
it cuts you up
it takes you high
you know the way
it's painted gold
is it honey
is it gold
you know the way
it throws about
it takes you in
and spits you out

You know the way
it throws about
it takes you in
and spits you out
it spits you out
when you desire
to conquer it
to feel you're higher
to follow it
you must be clean
with mistakes
that you do mean
move the heart
switch the pace
look for what
seems out of place

And now I find
the special kind
you yourself
like sun through blinds
you lift me up
get me out
keep me walking
but never shout

It's o.k.
it goes this way
the line is thin
it twists away
cuts you up
it throws about
keep me walking
but never shout

I would like to Nietzsche would have appreciated the whole "Dark Side
of the Moon" album by Pink Floyd. To me the lyrics as well as the music
tell a very Niezschean story of humanity or the 'human condition' and a
final blosom into that which is greater than humanity. Kind of like
reaching the dark side of the moon was a way of surpassing all that is
left behind on Earth. If you haven't heard the album please listen to
it all the way through and I would be more than willing to send a copy
to someone. And Pietzs I listened to the Peter Murphy song and was
surprised how much I liked listening to it especially with Nietzsche in
mind, thanks.

Nietzsche, I think, is first and foremost a critic, so the question is,
if he were alive today what music would he not reject? I think he would
choose some form of rock music, but since even the best of rock has
generally crappy lyrics, there is plenty in rock to reject. Maybe he
would like some Beatles songs, some Pink Floyd, the instrumentals of the
Doors (ie, minus the Jim Morrisson rubbish)? Rock music has that
Dionysus-Apollo tension that to me is the key to understanding
Nietzsche's personality. Maybe he would reject everything and just form
his own rock band? I don't know.

I've always felt that rock music owes a lot to Nietzsche for its very
existence, insofar as Nietzsche's Dionysian attitudes were
a big influence on the Beatnik era which led to folk music
which led to rock which epitomized the Dionysian ethos. But no doubt
many an erudite cultural critic has belabored this tangled connection
to death somewhere or other ...

I always felt the image of Nietzsche post-breakdown/breakthrough
improvising beautifully on the piano, as described by Peter Gast,
quite a poignant scene worthy of a great film.

I think a more profound question would be, how his being would translate to
present times.

I doubt he would fall for the viewpoint of western society that the
individual is primarily a consumer of goods. Given this I do not think he
would be of particular interest as an ongoing contributor to culture or
even society. This is a problematic answer.

I think his interest in culture would depend on his age and the state of
western culture at times in his life. I believe the political landscape
would be a damper to his interest in psychedelica or Dylan. Simply put, why
would he bother?

As far as the term "life-affirming" applied to culture.
In some ways popular culture could negate many aspects of an independent
life. Aspects of popular culture are too busy and stultifying.

I do think he might be enchanted by Britany Spears and he would probably
have a satelite dish. He might indeed be a sports fan.

Speculating on where his head would be would be interesting I suppose.

Where the man would be in 1950, 1968, 1976, 1981, 1991 or 2001?
I think we might never know him.
I certainly do not think he would be an activist.

It might be possible he would be in prison for a fit of rage.

He was a man of 1000 years, theres no new thought now, other than that of
the technocrat. The fractalization of ideas into new micro-schools of
thought.

He was fortunate to accomplish what he did when he did it.
So many other come so close and destroy what they accomplish for a bed and a
hot meal.

Another good question:
Would the world be the same today if he were not there for us when he was?
How many witches would still be burned?

Rush, Hemispheres. The whole thing is about Dionysys and Apollo. Nietzsche
would be a Rush-head!

Artist: Faith No More
Title: The Real Thing

I know the feeling
It is the real thing
The essence of the truth

The perfect moment
That golden moment
I know you feel it too

I know the feeling
It is the real thing
You can't refuse the embrace...

It's like the pattern below the skin
You gotta reach out and pull it all in
And you feel like you're too close
So you swallow another dose

The pinnacle of happiness
Filling up your soul
You don't think you can take any more
You never want to let go

To touch the roots of experience
The most basic ingredients
To see the unseen glitter of life
And feel the dirt, grief, anger and strife
Cherish the certainty of now
It kills you a bit at a time
Cradle the inspiration
It will leave you writhing on the floor...

This is so unreal, what I feel
This nourishment, life is bent
Into a shape I can hold
A twist of fate, all my own
Just grit your teeth, make no sound
Take a step away and look around
Just clench your fist and close your eyes
Look deep inside, hypnotize
The whisper is but a shout
That's what it is all about
Yes, the ecstasy, you can pray
You will never let it slip away

Like the sacred song that someone sings through you
Like the flesh so warm that the thorn sticks into
Like the dream you know will one day come to life
Try to hold on just a little longer, stronger

It's the jewel of victory
The chasm of misery
And once you have bitten the core
You will always know the flavor
The split second of divinity
You drink up the sky
All of heaven is in you arms
You know the reason why

It's right there, all by itself
And what you are, there is nothing else
You're growing a life within a life
The lips of wonder kiss you inside
And when it's over the feeling remains
It all comes down to this
The smoke clears, I see what it is
That made me feel this way...

This is so unreal, what I feel
Flood, sell your soul, feel the blood
Pump through your veins, can't explain
The element that's everything
Just clench your fist and close your eyes
Look deep inside, hypnotize
Yes, the ecstasy, you can pray
You will never let it slip away

Like the echoes of your childhood laughter -- ever after
Like the first time love urged you take its guidance -- in silence
Like your heartbeat when you realize that you're dying -- but you're
trying
Like the way that you cry for a happy ending, ending...

I know
I know...
