A few weeks ago, Republican leader Newt Gingrich heard about a SCOTUS
nominee who is of Mexican heritage.
Hearing that she would draw from her *experience*, Mr. Gingrich joined Rush
Limbaugh in denouncing the judge as a "racist" .

Today, he issued a "what I meant to say" aplogoy that has become common
among Republicans who accidentally, honestly speak their mind.
Unfortunately, Mr. Gingrich could not come up with a politically correct
term for "racist".

So instead of correcting himself he simply said that the remarks "should not
have been made".
This, too, is a common rhetorical practice among Republicans - when talking
about the crimes they committed, the acts of corruption that they
participated in, and the general bad character they display - they speak of
it in the third person.

At this point, I guess I should apologize for this post not keeping the
promise of the subject line.
Newt Gingrich most certainly did NOT apologize for calling the judge a
racist.
The disgraced former congressman still thinks of her in racist terms, it's
just that he now realizes how stupid it was for him to say so out loud.
