"Official" Altfanthingee Tshirt

After minimal talk about the "offical" T Shirt I took it upon myself to
take this under my wing (since this work is what pays my rent). I have
been working up a couple of concepts and making some preliminary
sketches. I went back to Neil's original description of the Dream King,
to have as unclouded an image of him as possible (if anyone has a copy
of the REAL proposal that Neil gave to DC (and maybe his sketches?), I
would really, really appreciate it). So I'm gettin' there. I hit a
point where I needed some production specs and called my printer to get
prices. Which brings me to you all....
I need to know what everyone is willing to pay for these things and how
many of you want one. Now I know you probably want to see it before you
decide, and I will be posting the art on my site as the creative process
evolves so everyone can have an input, after all it is for you guys.
But I just need a rough idea. The shirts will be black ('course) and
I'm looking at either 2 or 4 colors. A 2 color shirt would cost us all
around $11.00 and a 4 color would be $14.00. I am making no money on
this, so there is no mark up involved. Thats not why I'm doing it, or
want to do it. This is for US not me.
So If you are even remotely interested in these, post a reply and give
me your thoughts. I'm very open to suggestion as well.

Me! Me! And I'll pay something that is a reasonable logical sum of money.
And please make them big enough to be comfy; tiny t-shirts are troublesome. :)
Two color would work; four-color would be nice but I can't really say for sure
until I've seen the sketches. And don't forget about the lettering!
I wonder if we're violating any copyrights...
But you know, I bet if we don't actually put "THE SANDMAN" on it, we won't be.

I'd certainly be interested in them. I'd try and suggest something, but I'm
in a Friday braindead sort of mood, so I can't help you there. :-)

Two things about this. If we're putting a likeness of Sandman on it, you
might as well put "The Sandman" on it. If you're going to violate
copyrights, you might as well go all the way!
Second, couldn't we just get written consent from Neil to do that? Anyone
out there care to contact him about that? I don't know if that would make it
totally legal, but it couldn't hurt. And you never know, maybe Neil would
have some art that could help out in the design.
An interesting sidenote: Last March, a local con that I am involved with had
Garth Ennis and John McCrea as its Guests of Honor. We asked John to design
a t-shirt for the con, and what we got was a "Hitman in Black" design. Tommy
and Six-Pac dressed as "Men in Black" Worked out rather well. When we asked
Garth about it he basically said, (regarding copyrights), "they're my
characters, so who cares?" Thought that might be relevent.

It wouldn't make it totally legal; DC/Vertigo owns the copyrights I believe.

14 dollars is very reasonable. I may or may not have the money when the
time comes, but I'm interested in this. I'm sure people would ask me a lot
of questions about it though...not that that's necessarily bad...
So um, basically, go for the 4 colors.

could we have *some* smaller shirts with the bigger ones? some of us swim in L
sizes... even M... and i resemble that remark.
and, here's an idea that might not work, but... if we could get neil's consent
at one of the Stardust signings, maybe he'd do a sketch for the actual shirt.
I'm volunteering to be the go-between for this project, of course... ;)

colors. Since this is probably a smaller run, the cost of the screens
could be significant. White on black would work fine for a lot of the
potential designs. Works fine with most of the Death shirts.
DC does own the rights to the Sandman characters and the art in the
Sandman comics. They can be protective about the use of their
characters. Small runs might go unnoticed, but discussing it on a Usenet
newsgroup (one which has been visited by Bob Wayne in the past) might
draw attention to our schemes.
If the shirt has original artwork, then there's no reason it has to have a
label. (Death? No, that's just some Goth chick.) BTW, I strongly advise
getting good original art. One of the reasons that the Suicide Squid
shirt is so much fun is the amazing SSquid art. It would be well worth
seeing if we could comission one of the Sandman artists to do something
up.
Another option is a Sandman theme, but nothing taken directly from the
series. One of my projects that never got finished was a "The Worlds'
End is My Local" shirt.
Of course, you could just do a picture of the Shadowy Mr. G. Just don't
use that John Bolton picture with the large glasses.
As a final word of warning, I advise anyone who is put in charge of this
to factor a profit for each shirt. Things go wrong. People change their
minds. There are bound to be complaints. Mailing lots of packages is no
fun. It's a tough job and you might as well get something for your
troubles. (You wanna back me up on this, tyg?)

also thought that I would mention that rec.music.tori-amos ended up making
an extremely wonderful shirt a few years ago, and perhaps a brief search of
the DejaNews archives might be of use to those running this project.

First off the copyright thing is pretty much
moot. This would be a fan based endeavor
with very few shirts produced and not for
profit. Any company with sense ignores
such activity, that is assuming they ever even
learn of it and 99% of the time they don't.
Secondly being that this is alt.fan.NEIL
I'm not entirely sure that Sandman related
art would be the best even tho my original
conceptual for the shirt had the many faces
of Delirium side by side with the words
"From Deliteful to Delirious" on the front.
I just recently came across a piece of art
by Jill Thompson that has Neil as a cutout
doll and a couple of different outfits for
him that I thought was hilarious and I was
thinking of contacting Jill to see if we could
use it for a shirt and running off a couple
dozen. Due to the nature of the art I'd
probly do the main image in white on black
and then do something on the back in colour.
Comments? As a professional t-shirt artist
and screenprinter for 8 years I can honestly
say that simple is usually better particularly
when very dark shirts are involved.

yah, i see your point and i concur. because, honestly, how many sandman shirts
does the average person here have? do they really need another one? ok, dont

Seems like a great idea to me. If you just have Neil on the shirt, with
allusions to his creations, you can't go wrong. And don't get me started on
Jill Thompson...she's fabulous! I think she'd agree to it, especially if we
all suck up a little of the costs and give her a couple of the shirts.

Jill Thompson is just downright amazing. When I first got Scary Godmother,
I ran around showing it to everyone and attempted to make them read it,
telling them it was incredible and going on and on about it, and then,
finally, I realized that I was frightening everyone, so I stopped. Still,
they're missing out, I think. Jill Thompson's extremely cool.

folks like Sarah Dyer and Evan Dorkin. They also list an address to get in
touch with Jill's company. Does anyone want to write her with the request,
or should I do it?

Oh I owe the lady a big favour anyways for
saving me from my stupidness and keeping
my Vess Stardust painting so she will get
at least a couple of shirts if I'm the printer.

It's my pet project so I'll handle it. I
wouldn't bother Doran, she was a bit of
an ass the last time I asked her something
so I'd rather not support her work.
