Why does people laugh when the man in the sketch
(M.P. at Hollywod Bowl) say that his wife is
from Glendale?

Speaking as someone who was in that audience, I laughed for no other reason
than just how bizarre it was to hear the name of a little city near me come out
of Terry Jones' mouth in the middle of the nudge-nudge sketch...talk about When
Worlds Collide! As far as I know there's nothing particularly funny about
Glendale... what about Pearly?

Terry Jones said "Glendale" to appease the California crowds (like a rock concert
shouting "How's it going, Glendale!?" I'm guessing that they chose Glendale
because "Hollywood" would be, too obvious. Everyone laughed the implication was
that girls from Glendale "get around a bit....nudge nudge." Use this same logic
for Purley.

BTW: this may not actually be the reason, but it's always made a sick sort of
sense to me. If you don't like it, you can stick your head in a bucket of pirhana
fish.

When TJ mentions Purley in the original tv sketch, that's because Purley is
just such a place - middle class. Sorry if anyone fromPurley takes offence
at this!

I agree, but can I stick my head in the bucket anyway?
