I found some fun stuff recently via recommendation engines, so I
thought I'd try it here. Perhaps you have a recommendation for other
Jittlov fans?

I always recommend the Lego stop-motion films by Spite Your Face
Productions at spiteyourface.com.

For non-film, I'll recommend an online/paper comic I found just last
week: "Girl Genius", by Phil & Kaja Foglio. at www.girlgeniusonline.com
aka girlgenius.net

I don't recall what lead me to Girl Genius last week, and I'm sure
many will say "where have YOU been?" But, hey better late than never.
(Besides, there was a ton of available pages for me to read all at
once.) And it was clean enough material to share with my 12-year-old
daughter who was beginning to believe that all good comics come from
Japan. (And giving me grey hair keeping with her requests for my
strict pre-approval policy.) And no kidding, my wife and son came
into the room to see what we were laughing so hard about.

Now, please tell me what else I'm missing :-)

I'll bet you neglected to purchase any Girl Genius ornamentation. At the
moment, I have an airship on my cap.

Just a note that not all of the Foglios' work is family-friendly. I
got an issue of "Buck Godot: Zap Gun For Hire" and... no. As for
"Xxxenophile", well, I got the impression from the title that I
probably shouldn't bring it into the house.

But Girl Genius is great.

Really nice crazy cartoons, she did a lot of stuff for Seseme Street

Prudishness is nothing to take pride in. Isolating children from things

The younger of my children is 20 years old, so I'm not really worried
about what either of them see at this point. Apparently using the
term "family-friendly" touched some sort of hot button for you, which
is really too bad. But prurience for the sake of prurience is no
better than excessive prudity, and yes, I do believe that what
children should be exposed to varies with age -- with sex as with
firearms, alcohol, and everything else.

And I found Buck Godot to be full of prurience for the sake of
prurience.

With this thread, I'm really hunting for more suggestions of good
entertainment. Lets talk about that. However, it is fair to include
warnings for worried parents, like myself, if we should look at
something before letting children look at it.

For parenting and social topics, lets go to another thread.

Thanks

Well, I really do want the "FOOLS! I WILL DESTROY YOU ALL! askmehow"
t-shirt. So, I wouldn't call it "neglected" so much as "future
purchase, as yet un-budgeted".

However, I did go out and find some paper Girl Genius comics. (For my
technologically-challenged family members).

You have beat me fairly...the youngest of my children is 22....as is the
eldest....and is the mid one, too.

Oh, BTW, it was the disallowal of the awesome zine XXXenophile that forced
my hand.

> so I'm not really worried about what either of them see at this point.

If only you'd loosened up...lo, these many years ago.

> Apparently using the term "family-friendly" touched some sort of hot

Do you want to know what actually does set me off? People telling me that
they know better than I, just what emotion I may be emoting at a given
moment.

I mean, not only am I on the inside track, but I'm usually more intelligent
& better educated, too. Don't get yourself wound up though. I've just
found that it's easier to assume my superiority over 90-95% of the world
population, than to bother to test everyone else.

And I have always refused to use "emoticons"....do you think that you would
have found the humor more easily _with_ them? Me, I just find them annoying
(!!!!) on one hand, but on the other hand, some prefer to speak to adults as
though they were weak-minded preschoolers.

But, on gripping hand, many find sublety to be little more than a drifting
contrail on a summer sky.

> But prurience for the sake of prurience is no better than excessive

And you base this base pronouncement upon which? Related, at least
somewhat, to why one of my ancestors left Salem in the timeframe of the late
1680s...and ended up as a founder of the Baptists. In a word.....Hah!
You've obviously been warped into believing religious claptrap.....

See, it would have never occurred to me to

> and yes, I do believe that what children should be exposed to varies with

Ah, but what, at which age? One should absolutely NOT be forced to learn
some of these things on one's own after one has achieved the age of
majority. Ask me, I *know*. [Please don't get the idea that you're
watching reruns of Tom Cruise trying to sell Co$]

> And I found Buck Godot to be full of prurience for the sake of prurience.

Ah, but then you really should read XXXenophile. Sadly, the lovely issue
that I had gotten autographed by one of the inkers (at the infamous Capricon
13) got snowed on when one of my nosey relatives decided to rummage my desk
while it was still out of doors *in* *the* *snow*(they were "helping" me
unload a 26' U-Haul (packed to the ceiling and beyond)). They didn't have
the decency to mention their faux pas either, so I still don't know who is
responsible (after 13 years of wondering).

>>> But Girl Genius is great.

No, no, no.....try it again. *But Girl Genius is G-G-G-Great!!!*

Heh. Sorry about hijacking your thread, old man.

Good point. If parents need warnings, please ensure that your children have
reviewed said material before the poor parents get their knickers in a
bunch.

Rather, it should go to a different ng.

OK, I got my T-shirt. I would have gotten my young spark (daughter)
one of the new backpacks the Foglios announced earlier this month, but
they sold out in about 20 days.

I have to be careful though. I put in on and suddenly felt inspired
to re-wire the LAN in my office and change the computers around and
cause modest mayhem. (A bit different than the WOSAT pin, which
inspired a short laundry basket-driving film. :-)

Very cool! I'm listening to the first part now. Sound quality appears
to vary from nice and clean to mangled noise. I'll try playing it
playing it elsewhere, this install of XP is tired and being replaced on
a new drive. I should do that now.....
