Actually, I'm surprised at the increase - especially the supposed
increase in cities with poor mass transit like Austin (some anectdotal
evidence of more bus riders in a news8 story a while back).

The increase in variable cost due to gas going from $1.50 to $3.00 /
gallon is not much compared to the fixed cost of owning and operating a
car at all, so unless you can get rid of a car, it seems foolish to
make this decision on purely economic grounds.
