This morning in front of my house there was a new three- to four-inch
thick yellow pages phone book and a couple of smaller regional books in
a big plastic bag. This arrival didn't include the huge white pages
book and the other versions that will be arriving shortly from other
phonebook providers.

I use a phone book maybe one or twice a year---and this may be a
stretch.

I use my phone book all the time, I keep it in my car. Handy to look up
businesses in the yellow pages and has nice maps too. Seems a lot of
the businesses I drive to are moved or out of business when I return so
I need to look up alternatives, and who can find a phone booth?

We get competing yellow pages, so we get two..
A couple people actually don't have the internet, and they make money on the
yellow page ads. Until those things change, we will have phone books.

Some people have this strange idea that they can remove parts to
"simplify" what they're saying, without affecting the meaning.

The kind of thinking that lead to the "Home Pregnancy Kit" ads at drug
stores.

Some of which will go directly into the trash, along with the junk
mail.

maybe not; and it may not matter anyway....

Telephone books represent significant tonnage in the waste stream
(640,000 tons per year), are a low grade of paper that must be
"downcycled" into lower grade recycled products, and are
distributed with materials that become contaminants in the recycling
process (e.g., magnets and plastics). Local governments currently bear
the costs to recycle phone books, and many do not have year-round
recycling opportunities, making it inconvenient for residents who want
to recycle. In recent years, the number of telephone books delivered
to households and businesses has increased, with several competing
companies now publishing and distributing books in a single geographic
area, raising advertising costs for businesses. Most publishers do not
provide a system to allow residents and businesses to "opt out"
from receiving those books, and pass publication costs onto consumers
whether or not they want them. PSI is currently working with local and
state government agencies, which want to partner with telephone
directory publishers and other stakeholders to reduce the number of
unwanted phone books.
