My daughter's choir teacher uses Michael as an example of how NOT to
sing. My daughter and I at times will sometimes mock Michael's
pronounciation of the word "you", particularly on Timeless: the Classics
album ( a very nasal yuuuuuuu). Please forgive me fellow BBs for this
blasphemy.
But Michael is my lifeline when I can't stand my life anymore. Not to
worry anyone, I'm not talking suicide here. But there are times when I
hurt so much and am so angry at the world and myself for allowing my
life to be what is. And it's at those moments when Michael is my best
friend. He soothes my soul when it is most needy. I hear his voice,
latch onto the lyrics and let the words and his emotions sink into my
bloodstream and spread throughout my body.
I think Michael is a great singer because he has a capacity through his
songs - WHICH HE WRITES WITH OTHER PEOPLE. LET'S GIVE THEM CREDIT- and
his voice(which is a controversial point, some people love the range and
raspiness of it, others hate the straining high notes) to touch other
people's hearts and minds. He expresses through his music the dreams and
desires which most of us will never express or would never dare to admit
out loud to another. He transcends the gulf between male and female
psyche.
On a lighter note, since I haven't posted here in a long time and many
of you won't know me, I found Michael thanks to Joan Lunden.I lived in
France for a long time and back in the States, found I didn't know the
music scene at all. Watching Good Morning America one day, Joan was all
ga-ga about some pop star. I don't remember him at all except that he
mentioned Bob Dylan and didn't sing the title song (sang Steel Bars
instead). Months later in Aberdeen, Scotland where we had been
transferred I found Time, Love and Tenderness in the library, remembered
Joan, NOT MICHAEL, and borrowed it. After a few plays I still wasn't
sure if I liked Michael's voice, but then I read the lyrics, listened
more closely, and the rest is history. A couple of weeks later, my kids
had no choice for my Christmas present - buy any existing MB albums!
Laine, I could go on and on here about how Michael has affected my life.
After I discovered him, I began writing my own lyrics. So what if
they'll never be published. They lanced a boil, which I admit is a
pretty disgusting image, but helped me keep from making a bad situation
worse. And the lyrics are pretty good, I think! Who knows, I may just
make it up on that stage one day to accept the Grammy (yeah, right). I
began writing other things after the lyrics, went back to work writing
technical articles (pretty boring at times but it is writing.. and
paid!!) and have begun writing creatively after work. I've met the most
marvelous people online through a love for Michael's music.
When you ask what makes Michael a great singer, we can't answer it
simply. There is so much more to Michael than his musicality. Others
have already mentioned his family life, his dedication and contributions
to worthy causes such as battered and abused women, his devotion to his
fans. He's got a great sense of humour and although I think he's got
some physical flaws (as do all of us), in some photos he's a hunk.
Ummhmm!!
You cannot separate the man from the music. Michael, whatever his flaws
or musical deficencies may be, inspires a devotion in his fans rarely
seen. Long may it live. And Michael, please keep on singing.

You know what we should have done everyone - made a copy of this thread
and sent it to Michael as a Valentine's message. Wow!
