LONDON, April 24 (Reuters) - Material girl Madonna, a surreal icon of her own
time, has agreed to lend a key art work from her private collection to a major
retrospective of surrealist art planned for the end of the year. "The work is
'Self Portrait With Monkey' by Frida Kahlo," a spokeswoman for London's Tate
Modern art gallery told Reuters. "We had no difficulty in persuading her to
part with it temporarily."
The work was painted by Kahlo -- then a virtual unknown but now one of
Mexico's most celebrated artists -- in 1940, just 14 years before her untimely
death at the age of 47. Her paintings -- largely illustrating her own
pain-ridden and anguished life -- are snapped up by collectors. The most
recent to sell at auction changed hands for over $5 million a year ago in New
York. The exhibition at the one-year-old Tate Modern, billed as a complete
survey of surrealism and the biggest in the past two decades, will run from
September 20 until December 16.
