I Want It That Way
Believe
Livin' La Vida Loca
Smooth
No Scrubs
My pick: "Believe" .... simply because of the category description above.
The winner: "Smooth"
****Album Of The Year
Award to the Artist(s), and to the Album Producer(s), Recording Engineer(s)
and/or Mixer(s) if other than the artist.
Millennium, Backstreet Boys
Fly, Dixie Chicks
When I Look In Your Eyes, Diana Krall
Supernatural, Santana
Fanmail, TLC
My pick: "Millennium", again based on the category description.
The winner: "Supernatural" though I could see Diana Krall winning it, just
to distance themselves from the overwhelming pop feel of this year's award.
But then, how many of the voters have actually heard her or OF her.
****Song Of The Year
A Songwriter(s) Award. A song is eligible if it was first released or if it
first achieved prominence during the Eligibility Year. (Artist names appear
in parentheses.) Singles or Tracks only.
I Want It That Way
Livin' La Vida Loca
Smooth
Unpretty
You've Got A Way
My pick: Hmmm, this is a tough one. "Unpretty."
The winner: "Smooth"
****Best New Artist
For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first
recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.
Christina Aguilera
Macy Gray
Kid Rock
Britney Spears
Susan Tedeschi
My pick: Macy Gray all the way.
The winner: Could be and could not be Susan Tedeschi for exactly the same
reasons as Diana Krall above. I could also see Christina Aguilera getting
it. Good combination of appeal and talent. I really hope it's Macy Gray,
though. She seems the obvious critical choice.
****Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
For a solo vocal performance. Singles or Tracks only.
Genie In A Bottle, Christina Aguilera
Beautiful Stranger, Madonna
I Will Remember You, Sarah McLachlan
Thank U, Alanis Morissette
...Baby One More Time, Britney Spears
My pick: Uh, gee..... can I see some more choices, please? I suppose I'll
root for Madonna if I have to, though I don't think there's anything about
this song or performance that deserves to be awarded (even if I do like the
overall product).
The winner: Please not Sarah McLachlan..... I liked this song the first 3
or 4 times they promoted it to radio. Come on, enough already. I can see
Alanis getting it. Possibly (and probably) Christina.
****Best Male Pop Vocal Performance
For a solo vocal performance. Singles or Tracks only.
I Need To Know, Marc Anthony
Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of...), Lou Bega
Sogno, Andrea Bocelli
Livin' La Vida Loca, Ricky Martin
Brand New Day, Sting
My pick: Ricky Martin. Marc Anthony? You've got to be kidding. Stay home
Lou Bega.
The winner: Grammy likes to go the safe, adult route. I see either Sting
or Bocelli getting this one.
****Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal
For established duos or groups. Singles or Tracks only.
I Want It That Way, Backstreet Boys
Maria Maria, Santana
Kiss Me, Sixpence None The Richer
All Star, Smash Mouth
Unpretty, TLC
My pick: "I Want It That Way" or "Unpretty"
The winner: Tough one. Seeing Smash Mouth here convinces me that 1999 was
a pretty unimpressive year if they're scraping the bottom of the barrel in
such a big category. I guess the winner is probably Santana.
****Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals
For a collaborative performance by artists who do not normally perform
together. Singles or Tracks only.
The Prayer, Andrea Bocelli & Celine Dion
When You Believe, Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey
Music Of My Heart, 'N Sync & Gloria Estefan
Love Of My Life, Santana Featuring Dave Matthews
Smooth, Santana Featuring Rob Thomas
My pick: Santana
The winner: Egad! Probably the Celine/Bocelli track. Or Santana. Really
the only 2 that deserve it.
****Best Dance Recording
For solo artists, duos or groups, vocal or instrumental. Singles or tracks
only. Award to the Artist and to the Producer (and/or Mixer) if other than
the Artist.
Believe, Cher
Don't Let This Moment End, Gloria Estefan
Praise You, Fatboy Slim
Waiting For Tonight, Jennifer Lopez
I Will Go With You (Con Te Partiró), Donna Summer
My pick: Oooh! This is a tough one. I'd be equally happy with Cher or
Donna Summer. Fatboy Slim wouldn't be disappointing either.
The winner: Cher, if only because it's her comeback chance.
****Best Pop Album
For solo artists, duos or groups, vocal or instrumental. Compilation albums
by various artists are not eligible. Award to the Artist and to the
Producer(s), Recording Engineer(s) and/or Mixer(s) of 51% or more playing
time of album.
Millennium, Backstreet Boys
Believe, Cher
Ricky Martin, Ricky Martin
Mirrorball, Sarah McLachlan
Brand New Day, Sting
My pick: Okey-dokey.... let's eliminate Mirrball and Brand New Day right
off the bat. After that, it's tough. Any of the remaining 3 would be fine
with me.
The winner: Probably Sarah or Sting, though I don't think they deserve to
win this category.
I'm not going to comment on the Rock and R&B categories, because I'm not as
familiar with the stuff nominated there. But I hope Macy Gray picks up all
the awards she's nominated for. And I hope Whitney Houston goes home with
something. She actually deserves it this year.
