Where was her mum born? It says in the People interview that she was
"half-French Canadian", yet Madonna used to say she was Italian - was she
ashamed?

Yes her mother is French Canadian. I'm not exactly sure but I've read
that her mother was from Montreal or a suburb called Westmount.

Yes, she was French Canadian - not sure where from. Her father
is second-generation Italian. Madonna was born in America

Hmm being French-Canadian is cooler than being "regular" Canadian I suppose..
lol. Although there is Celine Dion. It wouldn't be the same if Madonna wasn't
American, something cooler about being from there.

As someone who's half "real French" and not French-Canadian, Quebec is Canada's
backwater, much like Scotland is in the UK.

Madonna's mentioned her 1/4 French-Canadian heritage a number of times. But
with her mother dead and the fact that her father is Italian and it seems to me
that all Italian-Canadians are really big on a having "Viva Italy" that part of
her ancestry overshadowed the rest.

No Madonna never said that her mother was Italian. She always stated
that She was raised in a Strict Catholic Italian Family, so many Assumed
that her mother was Italian too!

In my 15+ years as a Madonna fan I have never read nor heard Madonna refer to
her mother as Italian. I have read interviews and articles in which the author
refers to her mother as being Italian. There is a huge difference between a
mistaken author and a person concealing his or her ancestry. I wouldn't say
she's ashamed at all.

The parent who raised her is Italian. I am sure she had more Italian
"influence" in her life, just because her Italian father was/is more of a
presence in her life.

Actually, isn't it Madonna FORTIN, which is a very common last name in
Québec...

And apparently, they've traced back common ancesters to Madonna and
Celine... Must be where they got that fame gene!
