Ok all, I have a quick question. My laserdisc player says it also supports CDV
format discs. What I am wondering is what is the difference between CDV and
VCD discs? And are they compatable.
I have the opportunity to get a macross VCD but it wont do me a whole lot of
good if I can't play the blasted thing. Thanks

Hello,

To put in simple terms, CDV is basically a CD-sized LD. On the ohter hand,
VCD is a video format that is encoded using MPEG compression. So there is a
decoding process that is added. Instead of the laser just hitting the disc
and reading it like with a CD or LD, the different decoding process is
added. I think I that is how it goes. VCDs don't work on a LD player. VCDs
so however work on a DVD player. If you have a computer w/ CD-ROM or Sony
PlayStation/Sega Saturn there are system add-ons that allow you to play
VCDs. If you need any other help just let me know.

Hi,

As well as various after-market internal or external add-on options parts that
allow you to play VCDs on a Playstation, Sony also sells a version of the
Playstation that can play VCDs. This can can recognized by the white casing
instead of the familiar gray case. The price is a little more than a standard PS
but not much. I don't know if this version is available in the US or Europe, but
it was launched in Asia in late 97 or early 98 if I remember correctly.

VCD's use MPEG compression to deliver a low quality image, but you can fit
a lot on a disc. CDV's are just small laserdiscs that deliver laserdisc
quality images and audio, but you can only fit something like 8 minutes on
the disc :)
