First, consider the scene where the following dialogue takes place:
Timon: Nice one, Simba.
Simba: Thanks. Man, I'm stuffed!
Pumbaa: Me too. I ate like a pig.
(etc.)
What are they talking about here? My assumption was that Simba had
hunted and killed something, which he then shared with Timon and Pumbaa.
But if anyone has other theories on what preceded the above dialogue,
please post them.
Second, here's what I could find on RL warthogs and meerkats. Warthogs
(phaecochoerus aethiopicus; order artiodactyla; family suidae, the pig
family) are primarily herbivores, but occasionally eat carrion. My
source made no mention of insects or other invertebrates in their diet.
There are three different species to which the term 'meerkat' could
apply. All belong to the order carnivora (surprised? I was) and family
viverridae, the mongoose family, which also includes civets and genets.
These are the gray meerkat (paracynictis selousi) a.k.a. Selous's
mongoose, the suricate (suricata suricatta) a.k.a. slender-tailed
meerkat, and the yellow mongoose (cynictis penicillata) a.k.a. yellow
meerkat or thick-tailed meerkat. All three are native to Africa, and
all have diets consisting primarily of insects and other invertebrates,
but also including small vertebrates (rodents, frogs, lizards, etc.),
the suricate perhaps eating somewhat less of the latter than the other
two species. The yellow mongoose is the least social in terms of its
intra-species behavior, and the suricate is the most amenable to being
tamed and kept as a pet by humans. Suricates also have black bands on
their backs such as we see on Timon. I would speculate it is most
likely that Timon is a suricate, but he could be a gray meerkat, and is
probably not a yellow mongoose.

Interesting note here:
In an episode of Timon and Pumbaa featuring Simba, they are worried about him eating
them in their sleep, and so subject him(unknowingly, of course)to a "How To Tell If Your
Lion Friend Craves Meat and Might Eat You Test." Timon also remarks to Pumbaa:
"He didn't get that big eating caterpillars and beetles!"(or something to that effect;
the actual line escapes me at the moment). However, Simba is also shown here eating a
pawful of bugs ONLY. No meat.
Now. Remember this?
"I'm so hungry I could eat a whole zebra!"
"AhAHha, we're fresh outa zebra."
"Any antelope?"
"Nah-ah."
"Hippo?"
"Nope. Look kid, if you're gonna live like us, you have to eat like us."
My thoughts on this:
First, I don't consider the cartoon Timon and Pumbaa to be a viable addition to the TLK
genere anyway. It's adherence to reality is tenuous at best, in strong opposition to
the animated motion picture. I'm inclined to agree with the above sugesstion, that
Simba caught himself something for dinner, but maybe Timon and Pumbaa simply ate insects
while he dined on meat. Or, maybe Timon and Pumbaa will eat meat in a pinch, but it's
not number one on their list of favorite foods. This is one of those things that make
you go "Hmmmmmm."
(Gee, notice I called T & P a cartoon and The Lion King an animated motion picture?
Interesting distinction, eh?)

No, I don't think so. IMO, Timon is referring to Simba's burp. See,
that's what we writers :-) call irony: you hear the burp and don't see
who made it, so you assume it was Pumbaa. Then you hear Timon
congratulating Simba (for it), and since that isn't what you expected,
it's funny.
Somehow I think that if Simba *had* killed something, it wouldn't be
glossed over like that.

Obviously T&P were planning to steal the vultures' dinner - either that or

From the future home of the 270 Foot Jesus
IMHO Timon's statement "Nice one, Simba" referred to Simba's hearty belch.
Notice that Pumbaa gave a bruiser of a burp eariler in the movie while
Simba was still "getting his jungle legs" and learning Hakuna Matata. No
proof of course, but I'd bet Timon can outbelch a beer-drunk freshman when
the spirit moves him, too. I'd guess that Simba's monster burp was meant
to show that he'd really become "one of the guys"--and Timon was
acknowledging that with his line.

Interesting aside: "suidae." Maybe that's why people say "sooooo-eeeee"
to call pigs? Haven't a clue, myself. Ryan, you're an Iowan--do you know
the answer to that one?

My book on the subject says the same thing. Some species of pigs might
well eat insects or invertebrates, though, especially if there's nothing
else for them.

Interesting isn't it, that Timon grouses about carnivores when he's an
insect and invertebrate eater? Somebody should tell The Disney Studios
that insects and invertebrates don't have roots, leaves, or
chlorophyll....Not that all plants do, but...... :)

Right. I'd guess a suricate, myself, but a gray mongoose is possible too.
Maybe Timon converted Pumbaa to his diet? :)
Thanks for writing. Enjoyed the post.

No question there's a contradiction here. I'd guess the T&P writers
weren't too careful about being canonically consistent.

Well, animals do talk in both, for starters. Not much reality there in
either case. Myself, I'm inclined to think that T&P is more "fanciful" in
a way than the movie, more "over the top." Realism is another story.
Most folks on this group seem to feel that T&P is not exactly "canon." I
tend to agree, but that's IMHO and an observation not easily buttressed
with facts.

Any of those are possible I'd guess. Personally, I think Simba had to be
eating more than bugs, grubs, and worms to grow as big as he did.

A quality distinction, perhaps? :)
Thanks for writing.

Hi!
I remember seeing a program about african animals and it said that to
survive, a lion had to eat 6-7 kg of meat a day... Since then I have
always wondered how Timon,Pumbaa, and Simba managed to find enough to
eat for several years with Simba _devastating_ the bug population and
ruining the Circle of Life ;)
