CONCODRDIA, Bellinsguazenia (ACRN) - There was another major vote in the 54th ISU Congress in Concordia on Tuesday. The Preliminary (formerly known as Qualifying) rounds have been eliminated from ISU competitions, yet again.,
From a financial standpoint, we see this as a wise move. As far as ticket sales, nobody wants to go to the preliminary round. It is very much like tennis. The Slam evnets in tennis also have their qualifying rounds, but nobody ever goes to watch them, and broadcasters, and not even the bootlegers, like those on LIveScoreHunter or FirstRow are going to carry them, because nobody wants to watch them.
Just like when the ISU eliminated the Cumpulsory Dance, at the last ISU Congress, they were doing what makes good financial sense. Nobody ever wanted to watch cumpulsories on TV, or buy tickets to the events. Eliminating the CD made ice dance more profitable for the ISU, and eliminating the Preliminaries in Singles and/or Pairs will also increase profitability for figure skating events, be eliminating another segment nobody wants to watch.
