The Times' impolitic story

by Harrison Wyman

Mark Twain once said that explaining humor was like
dissecting a live frog: in finding out why it lives, you
kill it. The same thing applies to certain interpreters
of late-night comedy who try to explain its greater
impact on American life.

The latest attempt at frog-killing takes the form of the
cover story in the Sept. 25 edition of the New York
Times Magazine. Writer Marshall Sella's central point --
which you might possibly miss in the thousands upon
thousands of words piled up around it -- is that a
significant segment of the population not only relies on
late-night comedy as a source of political information
but that presidential campaigns are using the jokes to
measure their candidates public standing. Oh, yes -- and
the people who write and tell the jokes have a political
agenda.

Sella did not interview a variety of players in the
late-night comedy game and use their words and deeds to
reach his conclusion; Sella imposed his thesis on the
comedians and writers even though the main point of
everyone he spoke with said the idea is to hit the
viewer's funnybone by the fastest way possible, by
working with what is already in the public domain.

Sella quoted Chris Kelly, a former writer for David
Letterman as thinking that Letterman was a "nonvoting
Republican." Combining that with a 1995 interview with
Tom Snyder in which he complimented Rush Limbaugh as "an
effective communicator," Sella implied that Letterman
was the closest thing to a Republican among the
late-night comedians.

It was a stunningly blind leap for Sella to make -- and
it exposes the first of several instances in which Sella
simply pontificated when a little bit of reporting would
have served him well. Had he done so, he could have
gotten his hands on the one and only interview Limbaugh
had with Letterman. The 1994 interview teetered between
hostility and mockery, with Dave spinning Rush like a
hog on a spit. Some Republican lovefest.

Sella's piece is so gassy, so fact-free and fart-filled,
that it's hard to make anything out very clearly in the
haze. After asserting that Dave's a Republican, Sella
then relives Letterman's video destruction of George
Bush last March. After detecting certain left-wing
biases in an interview with Leno, Sella sets up an
elaborate theory that all late-night humor is inherently
conservative, a trap from which not even Jay can escape.

Well, he could've escaped if, again, Sella had done even
the most rudimentary reporting. Just last month, Jay
joined his wife Mavis in a school-supply drive for the
women of Afghanistan. Lest this sound like another
charity event, the drive is actually part of a wider
campaign by the Feminist Majority to topple the
misogynist regime of that country. Mavis Leno is the
chair of that committee. More tellingly, her husband
earlier this year refused to appear at a conference at
which he had been booked, and for which he would be paid
good money, when it was pointed out to him that
union-busting was a main agenda item of the conference.

Sella did not bothering looking up Federal Election
Commission reports, either, as his predecessors did in
the early '90s to see if Letterman and Carson joined
their Hollywood compatriots in supporting political
candidates. (Almost alone among their peers, Dave and
Johnny gave exactly zero dollars to campaigns.)

This failure to attend to even basic details -- but to
go with the juicy speculation instead -- made
Letterman's blood boil. He demolished Sella and his
article on Monday night's "Late Show." The "Campaign
2000" segments have been a vehicle for Letterman's
freewheeling ad-lib observations on any topic that comes
to his mind. During Monday's segment, Letterman came out
swinging. He said he first voted in 1968 when "we had an
ugly, awful war going on, not an election about who's
banging interns," to the audience's laughter and
applause.

Letterman did find a bright side: the Times magazine
cover used a picture of Jay Leno with campaign buttons
covering his eyes and filling his mouth. Holding up the
cover, Letterman observed, "Until I saw this picture I
was under the impression ... that I was the goofiest
looking man on television."

All jokes aside, Letterman's was clearly angry at Sella
imposing his own definition on his life. "What kind of
weasly little thing is that to say about a person?"
Letterman asked. "It doesn't happen to be true. Do me a
favor: Keep your mouth closed."

(Some commentary was added by Aaron Barnhart)

Reader mail: Mike DeQuardo sure wasn't happy with my
take on Letterman's interview with Al Gore: "Tell me why
jokes about 'Old Sparky' when made at Bush's expense are
'wickedly funny'? Would you find a similarly 'crafted'
bit about a late term abortion -- if posed by Dave to be
used against Gore -- equally funny? Why is there little
or no outrage when 'The Late Late Show' sports 'Snipers
Wanted' as a graphic over Bush in a comedic news
segment? Or when Alec Baldwin says Henry Hyde should be
killed on Conan? Interesting that the same bleeding
hearts who abhor the death penalty have no shame spewing
this stuff under the guise of comedy. You can choose to
ignore it or deny it or both. You can't ignore the
double standard exists" ...

Still more mail piled up after last week's column on
TV-show music, which was in turn inspired by
previously-received reader mail. "Because I work such
long hours, I often catch the reruns of my soap operas
on late night TV or earlier the next morning," writes
Debra Wright. "I also record the first run of 'Port
Charles.' To my surprise, I realized that the episode
of 'Port Charles' that had aired 12 hours earlier
already had the song (a re-make of 'Dance with Life'
from the 'Phenomenon' soundtrack) replaced with
something generic. So TV execs are even more
short-sighted than syndicators -- even same-day re-runs
are also being reprogrammed!

"Now, this may not seem like such a big deal, but it is.
'General Hospital' had earlier used this same song (the
*real* version) in its storyline dealing with AIDS and
the characters of Robin and Stone. Stone died of AIDS
in very realistic and highly praised episodes, and Robin
later contracted AIDS from Stone. This same song was
used in 'Port Charles' this week, again with an AIDS
storyline. Anyone watching both soaps would remember
this connection and immediately be involved in the
storyline."

Tom Heald's TEST PATTERNS
<tom...@aol.com>

October 3: in 1982, pirate turned time traveler Phineas
Bogg (Jon-Erik Hexum) drops into the life of 12-year-old
orphan Jeffrey Jones (Meeno Peluce) on NBC's "Voyagers."
After the inter-dimensional vagabond's chronological
guidebook is eaten by the preteen's dog, the Phineas and
Jeffrey wind up lost in the timestream trying to correct
historical events with only the stopwatch-like Omni
device to guide them. "We travel through time to help
history along. Give it a push when it's needed. When the
Omni's red, it means history's wrong. Our job is to get
everything back on track. Green light, kid: We did it!"

October 4: in 1972, "Last of the Curlews," a one-hour
animated special from Hanna-Barbera, becomes the very
first "ABC Afterschool Special." Based on a 1954
Canadian novel by Fred Bodsworth, the special's stated
purpose is "to encourage in children a sense of
awareness and curiosity about the world they live in."
It will go on to win the 1973 Emmy Award for children's
broadcasting.

October 5: in 1957, NBC cancels "Gumby," dammit!

October 6: in 1996, Lois Lane and Clark Kent finally tie
the knot on ABC's "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of
Superman." Previously on the show, Lois had almost
married villain Lex Luthor, Clark married a frog-eating
clone of his intended bride, and once Clark finally
rescued the amnesiac Lois, she was brainwashed into
loving her psychiatrist. As the writers are finally
rewarding the show's romantic fans, the episode is
titled "Swear To God, This Time We're Not Kidding."

October 7: in 1964, NBC broadcasts "See How They Run"
and launches a genre: the first regularly scheduled
made-for-TV movie. John Forsythe and Senta Berger star
in the chase thriller involving three orphans who don't
realize they're carrying the goods to expose the
international crime ring that killed their father. The
teleplay is based on the novel "The Widow Makers" by
Michael Blankfort.

October 8: in 1960, on "Leave It to Beaver" the "Beav"
suggests his mom and dad get a divorce. His friend
Chopper's parents got one and he has lots of fun with
his many stepbrothers.

October 9: in 1988, while the writers' strike continues,
ABC opts for reality programming with a revival of
"That's Incredible" under the new name "Incredible
Sunday." John Davidson is back new cohost Christina
Ferarre. The two not only update stories from the show's
original run, but also uncover new oddities. First up: a
South African surrogate mother who gave birth to her own
grandchildren.
