Monday morning was the final chance to enter this year's pie contest.
Now we await the final judgement, which is in the actual hands of
Dave's Mom and in the virtual hands of the Pie Machine 314159 as
depicted here:

http://homepages.together.net/~hpr/pies/piemachine314159.html

Watch The Late Show With David Letterman tonight to see which pies
Dorothy unveils, and hear how many times the word "pie" is uttered.
This determines who is the winner of a pie to be baked by Traci.

In addition, the Pie Committee will gather to witness the PM314159
bake a sequence of virtual pies. The Pie Committee will judge which
entries score points for matching each virtual pie until some lucky
winner crosses the threshold of victory. In the event of a tie that
cannot be broken by virtual pies alone, the PM314159 will generate a
number of Pie Utterances to serve as a tie breaker. The winner of this
virtual pie contest will receive a Whoopie Pie.

Wednesday evening (or early Thursday morning), some time after the
Late Show airs, Eastern Time, watch the alt.fan.letterman newsgroup
for reports from the Pie Committee.

If all goes well, a podcast of our deliberations will be available so
all can experience the wonder that is the Pie Machine 314159 in
audible form. And Helen promises that this year, the PM314159 will
speak!

-----------------------------------------------------
The official rules for this year's Pie Contest are here:

http://homepages.together.net/~hpr/pies/

If you want to play the home version of this game,
here's some rules to try:

1. Note which pies were served at your own Thanksgiving meal.

2. Look at the entries listed below and determine which came closest
to guessing the pies you experienced.

3. Offer to send a pie to your local winner. Or, just eat an extra
slice of pie in the winner's honor.

4. Do not perform experiments to determine if your pie is
buoyant...unless you test the pie in a tank of vanilla ice cream.

----------------------------------------------------------------

This year, 41 guessers participate in the real and virtual pie
contests.

Here's the full data on the guesses in the order they were submitted,

(Why is this tally called "unofficial"? Because the source submissions
in the hands of the Pie Committee are the official basis for deciding
a winner...not Mr. Langdell's occasionally sloppy transcription of
entries.)

Enjoy your own non-virtual Thanksgiving and its pies, following
tonight's Late Show!

No, that was last year's prize. This year it's a package of Moon Pies.

Thanks for the scorecard - now we can all play along while watching
the big show tonight.

I love the kids in Halloween costumes, but this is my favorite LS
tradition.

This is why I'm boycotting the event this year. No pie from Traci, no
point in guessing.

Thanks and stuff,

Chad, Helen was talking about the prize for the Virtual Pie Contest
winner, not the real Pie Contest.

You missed out, dude.

OK, I just suck at this pie information thing. I suppose it's a
symptom of my not being able to eat pie, Whoppie Pie, or Moon Pie for
several years. (Why? "Allergies, dude.")

Mine, too. So much work is involved, people participate, and there's a
payoff. It's fun. More so than Halloween, with smashed pumpkins.

It seems that Dave's Mom always make pumpkin pies...my favorite.

Man, I just saw the show, Dave was on the right track, too. For the
second pie, his first guess was Cherry (my first guess for pie number
one). Second guess was Blueberry (My second pie, sort of with
crumbs). Finally he gets it with the third guess of Raspberry. Rats,
rats, rats, how close I was to that one.
