*DESK CHAT HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT*
Ohhhh, I'm just going to say that the desk chat highlight of the night
was Dave talking about "Late Show Fun Facts," now available wherever
books are sold.
There was a bunch of other stuff as well, including a couple of clips
and a TTL: 'Surprises in the Vice Presidential Debate.'
A little later, we were paid a visit by Sarah Palin Twain.
*CALISTA FLOCKHART*
I'd like to go to Alaska and see some bears and moose and humpback
whales. That picture of the humpback whale tail was beautiful. The show
is "Brothers & Sisters."

He's on "Saturday Night Live." Is 'SNL' any funnier this season?

The album is "Little Honey." I did not play 'When Did Helen Fast-Forward?'
*MISCELLANEOUS MEANDERING*
What's happenin', people? I decided to subscribe to DISH Network. They
got me up & running yesterday evening. Among other things, I'm excited
about NASA TV, which wasn't available on my cable system.
I guess that's all I got. I need to get some sleep.

It is funny how Oprah (or Oprah's) lawyers sound just like Dave's
girlfriend. He used the same voice.
During the monologue he talked about it being Kelly Ripa's birthday.
That's the second time during the past week that he has wished her a
happy birthday saying it was her birthday *today* After the first
mention, on the Regis & Kelly show, Regis seemed annoyed that Dave got
the date wrong and it wasn't her birthday. .

And talking about Regis & Kelly, Calista Flockhart was on Regis &
Kelly Thursday morning and they asked her the same questions, showed
the same three pictures and talked about Harrison Ford. It was almost
the exact same interview. Does the guest get to do two interviews
*exactly* the same on the same day? They never did mention it, but I
was wondering if Harrison Ford is her kid's father but IMDb says she
adopted the kid before Harrison Ford. (Not before she adopted
Harrison Ford but before she and Harrison Ford became an item!)

Not so much but I do enjoy the news thing.

there and watches the guitar player play.

I wouldn't mind having the NASA TV. That would be cool to have when
they launch something into outer space! But, I'm sticking to my cable
for now! They just upgraded some of the features and I was amazed
that when I went to set the DVR to record the debate, the DVR told me
that I could opt to have it tape 30 minutes over because it was a live
show. That's a pretty cool feature!

I have to say I'm surprised by the vehemence and the quality of the
Palin-bashing; not that she (or McCain) doesn't deserve it. I know the
first half of the show is now devoted to nothing but showing pre-tapes
and clips, but I don't get the point in just showing clips we've seen
a million times with no commentary or actual joke content.
That said, I fully expect Palin to show up fairly soon to do a self-
mocking TTL.

What was the point of this interview? And why did Dave feel like he
was walking on eggshells in bringing up her trip? It was obvious she
was going to talk about it, given that she gave him three snapshots.

Wow. As unfunny panelling as on the show (though I do like his Italian
talk-show host.)

I can also see her coming on the show in the week after the election and doing
the panel like Al Gore and Bob Dole, where she can sound warmer and less coached.
Then she'll return to Alaska and an ethics probe where she won't have McCain
campaign lawyers to intervene and a party she repeatedly called old and corrupt
to give herself reformer credentials.

NASA TV is nice...you'll see all the stuff the news channels see but
don't show.
Check out a new channel I just saw added. Channel 73.

Well, the humor is subjective of course. But it's certainly been much
more eventful due to Fey's resemblance to Palin.
Overheard from a tourist talking to his pals here in Emeraldtown:
"This is a really nice city. It's a lot better than Pittsburgh."
Wow, there's a terrific tourism slogan if I ever heard one.
I believe this moves us into the 2nd round, with 32 cities remaining.
I'm doing well in an online pool, but Colorado Springs beating Forth
Worth really busted up that bracket.

Reminds me of Yakov Smirnoff, who made some insulting remark at the expense of
Cleveland, then went on to explain:
"I don't really mean it...I just noticed that everybody in America makes fun of

I love the NASA TV. The live coverage from JPL when something cool is
happening on Mars or whatever is great. I get a kick out of watching
them break out the lucky peanuts, though if it were me, I'd prefer M&Ms.

For me the highlight of the "Al Gore: Still Fat" clip was the "And What
About That Guy?" with his head on his hands in the background when Obama
was speaking on the floor of the Senate. (The guy was none other than
Vermont's Senator Bernie Sanders.)

are worse then "The Oprah Log" (God, I used to cringe when Dave pulled
out that binder from under his desk!)
He has shamelessly promoted the book *every* night for the last two
weeks, and on this episode, it was mentioned not once, but *three*
times! That's WAY too much and goes beyond whoring at this point.

Yeah, it seems like overkill to me too. But then, I hate "Fun Facts" on the
show so I'm not inclined to care about the home version. At least not until
it turns up in the remainder bins.

The Oprah Log was brilliant satire. I couldn't get enough of it.

Crash, have you not seen people on a book tour endlessly promoting
their new books? They are on every TV and radio show on the planet
doing what the book company expects them to do, promote their new book
to get sales up.
We're lucky the book company didn't make Dave go on tour with the book
and he gets to just sit at his desk and promote it. But, the book
company does insist that authors promote their books because they gave
the author a lot of money to write the book and they want their money
back in book sales.
As I've told you before, it is *normal* to promote a new book.

Wrong. You don't promote it in the *same* place night after night,
over-saturating the core audience who tune in not expecting
the same jokes and the same plugs every time.
Would you tolerate Paris Hilton coming on *every* night for two weeks,
promoting her little reality show? No, you wouldn't.
Regardless of what the publisher wants, the over-promotion:
a) Isn't funny
b) Makes me *not* want to buy the book out of spite
c) Is insulting

Isn't this what Dave has been doing since his days in radio?
Doing something over and over and over until it's beat into the ground
and then doing it some more.
I don't expect anything of him and I think he's making fun of the
promotion thing.
I like the promotion and the book.

The shamelessness is part of the bit. In the context of the show,
Dave's promotion of the Fun Facts book is no different from his
promotion of the Will It Float game, and Dave's identical treatment of
an imaginary product and a real product underlines his cynicism about
marketing. Half the show is devoted to marketing personalities, every
night. Dave doesn't undermine and deconstruct that process like he
used to, for sure. But when he hauls out the Fun Facts book every
night I get that same spirit of erosion, and hear mostly bemusement.
As to the Oprah Log, it was a brilliant, long-running hit. Studio
audiences, notoriously clueless about running gags, roared and cheered
when he brought it out. Although the Log was retired in grand style, I
was very sorry to see it go.

Brad, that sounds like a reaaaaaaaaaaalllllly big rationalization
on your part. Me, I prefer actual jokes or Dave waxing about a topic
that he can riff off of.
As for the Oprah Log, I did not find it in any way, shape or form
"brilliant". I thought it was incredibly boring and a colossal waste of
air time.
