Several of these people are dead. I hope you're not expecting them to

I kept waiting for mention of Frank Caliendo who seems to be
one of Dave's favorites these days.

They could also get Danny Gans and Gordie Brown who are headlining here in
Las Vegas.

In a radio interview Caliendo did after his last appearance (I posted an mp3
link here), he said that he was invited back to the show in November. So I'd say
he's booked for Impressionist Week.

Kee-rist, I hope not. Ventriloquists were one thing, but
impressionists are truly the bottom of the barrel and the asshole of
show business.

What's next? Guys who spin plates? How about a whole week of Is This
Anything?

Ugh.

Also Jimmy Stewart, and based on an early clip I saw of him (on the Sullivan
show, in fact) Steve Allen....

And then get Kevin Spacey to do Carson...impressionist cascades!...r

I'll have to call ya on that "Steve Allen kinescope (?) on ED SULLIVAN"

Steve Allen did do an impression or two (the NY DAILY NEWS
letter-writer, for the instance I can squeak-out of my trivia cells.

They were actually HUGE RIVALS: They allegedly feuded.

8pm Sunday Night was a couch potato's
existential crisis, because Steve was NBC and Ed was CBS, and I don't
recall the twains amicably meeting.

However, if you insist and can supply a link or sumthin.

Back then (mid 1950s), SONY BETA and RCA VCR probably weren't yet mere
gleams in engineer eyes.

The first tv recording-playing machine I got was used awhile by my
cousin & cost me about $1100 circa 1971: A Sony Betamax, and I fgelt
lucky to have it.

Well, that is true. There's a story about the early days of major league
baseball in Toronto, when Earl Weaver was still managing the Orioles. As
Earl headed back to the dugout after going to the mound at old Exhibition
Stdium, some fans behind the dugout were yelling at him. Earl looked right
at them and yelled "Shut the hell up!" They did.
Try that in NYC . . .

Does anyone remember the show from the 70's called "The Copycats" I
think? It was a syndicated comedy sketch show with nothing but
impressionists. I used to love that show when I was a kid.

Okay, now perhaps I get it:

Johnny Carson mimics Jimmy Stewart and Steve Allen on the SULLIVAN
stage(?).

Now that's obscure nostalgia indeed.

I recall Johnny was emcee of WHOM DO YOU TRUST (or of DO YOU TRUST YOUR
WIFE?) on ABC, though I never watched it

ABC had such a weak local UHF channel that it was always "snowing."

Wasn't Johnny mostly on ABC?

But I do recall my father commenting that Carson should take that JACK
PAAR vacancy, and the rest is history., because of his water closet
joke and other of Paar's silly "ego-eccentricisms," an humorous,
promising, fresh face Johnny Carson became JOHNNY CARSON.

Skitch Henderson replaced Jose Mellis.
Ed McMahon replaced Hugh Downs.
The tea time movie host replaced...Paar talking about his daughter
Randy.

No, he did Stewart on other shows...when he was on Sullivan he impersonated Ed
and the stars of the two shows opposite Ed (Steve Allen and Gunsmoke) playing
poker...his Marshall Dillon just grunted, and his Steve Allen kept giggling....

That's the French spelling. English speaking Canadians still use *and*
pronounce the 'H'.
You know how those wacky French are with their "H"'s.

Ça va?

As second banana to Joey Bishop, Regis learned what not to do.

Who was their bandleader?

From the entertainment column in today's Las Vegas Review Journal...

Mirage headliner Danny Gans was invited to participate on Impressionists Week
on "Late Show with David Letterman" but had to decline because of his
schedule, said his manager, Melanie Van Burch. "We got an invite that said
Danny was at the top of their list," and "they still call us every day trying
to get him," Van Burch said. Letterman has mentioned Gans on the show while
discussing the impressionists showcase. Gordie Brown of The Venetian accepted
an invitation and will perform on Nov. 15. ...

Okay, as far as entertainment goes, it may get repititious (one too
many Jack Nicholsons and George Bushs.)

However I must say it is really cool to see the Late Show spreading the
work around, that's got to be a big plus for those in the industry.
