I play bass guitar in two punk rock bands.
One does original material, the other is a cover band.
Will Lee and Tina Weymoth are my heroes.

Keyboards, and please, don't label this post "#1" for me in this thread.
I play clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor sax, recorders, and piano.
But these days, I spend the most time conducting adult concert bands.
Last Saturday morning I led a 24-piece band on the deck of a WW2
Liberty Ship, the Jeremiah O'Brien, at Fisherman's Wharf in San
Francisco.

Guitar and bass guitar. Is this an audition?
Just piano. Trained on classical, now play mostly ragtime.
-ronnie
Have you seen this great site for ragtime sheet music?
--James
No, I haven't seen that particular site, but I actually have quite a
few out-of-the-mainstream ragtime music compilations, many given to me
by a former manager of mine who first got me interested in the genre,
years ago. Always looking for new music though - thanks for the link!
-ronnie
Wow -- ragtime ain't that easy. You've got two hands with brains of
their own. Hats off.
drummer/vocalist for over thirty years. currently w/ the shane pruitt
band www.theshanepruittband.com
Admittedly ragtime gets a bum rap - often thought of as "fluff" music
when some of it has some very complex harmonies and can be difficult
to play. However, as much as I would love to just accept your
gracious compliment, ragtime in general is not that difficult.
Perhaps you are thinking of boogie-woogie? To me that is the one that
does indeed require 2 hands with brains of their own, and which I find
very, very, difficult.
-ronnie
Bill -- sounds and looks like a tight band. Good luck!
I like the running fan. :)
thanks donz! it gets hot down here in the south! :o) yeah, shane's a
great guitar player in the duane allman vein and jim on the hammond
organ, was an original member of the steve miller band....
I suspect you've already got the style ingrained into your brain after
years of practice, so it doesn't appear difficult anymore -- or it's
just something you intuitively picked up from scratch. Either way,
more power to you -- I've always found it a challenge.
Yeah, Boogie-Woogie is a whole other beast.
Yabut who put the word "Photo's" on your website?
I play the violin and sing opera, Jess. (Singers are allowed to call a
voice "an instrument.")
Also did a tiny bit of drumming, never studied it, and after the
performance people wanted to know where I learned how to play. It was
a hoot. Oh, I forgot one: 'finger cymbals' for belly dancing. So that
totals three/four instruments.
Sally
i'll point that out to our 'webmaster'.....
I used to play guitar, but it's been so long the calluses on my fingertips have
healed up....
It's so long I'm not even sure I remember which end you're supposed to blow
into....
Don't know if it's ragtime or boogie-woogie that requires two hands with minds
of their own, but neither is as intricate as playing the organ...two hands *and*
two feet all going at once, with the hands having to take off from playing the
actual music to make on-the-fly changes in registration, and the feet having to
do double-duty by working the swell pedal...(at least you don't have to pump the
bellows yourself any more)....r

I played piano as a kid, but, regretfully, quit around the 8th grade.
I can still play a Beethoven sonata, a Bach gigue, a couple of
Chopin's preludes, and everything in my son's piano books.
And I can ring some smokin' handbells! Check it out...

Okay, that's not really my handbell choir, but we are *almost* that
good. ;)

Well, actually.....I have a crazy little idea:
Would anyone with musical inclinations
have any desire to record tracks via the internets for a new
theme for the "Tony Mendez Show"?
It could be a nice unifying "group project".
Music heals all wounds and crosses all barriers.
It would take some organizing,
and there's no guarantee that Tony would consider using it,
but if it turns out well, who knows?
Perhaps Mikemack could deliver the final version to Tony?
The logistics could be worked out once there is enough interest...
(If there's any interest)
Is this too crazy?
A few years ago in the rec.music.beatles newsgroup, a group of
musicians from around the world collaborated to record some
outstanding Beatles covers, all via uploaded an downloaded files. The
drum parts, say, were created by someone in Australia; rhythm guitar
from England, vocals a combined effort from the U.S. and Italy. It was
quite an impressive feat.
So the concept is doable. But I doubt that many here have both the
software and hardware tools to be equal to the task. (I've
disconnected all of my hardware gear.)
So it's not too crazy; I just don't think it's feasible here.
Willing to be shown wrong.
Once I regain my guitar chops, I want to learn to play one of these:

It is the darn commission part which might be the deal breaker. It doesn't
mean that there might not be an opportunity in the near future for afl to
record one live! Get Marilyn started on the words-- and bottom line some
could use Kazoos! Even if it only appears on one 'special' show it could
be fun to see and hear.

Tony hasn't rejected many ideas afl has shared with him.

The TMS is in no need for a new opening theme tune.

Ugh.

I'm sure Dake is interested.

Not much of a guarantee that Tony would even consider it.

That could get him fired.

*If* there is enough interest.

You said it in your first line. It is too crazy.

What do you mean re: commissions?
I was assuming we would donate the song gratis.

We might want to donate-- but most agents will insist on getting paid!
I guess we could try and get Tony's Show classified as a 501c3?

I could start working on lyrics to the tune of "Secret Agent Man." The
ideas for lyrics are already starting to flow. Composing the
melody...well, I already have one ready. (That's for those who want
originality, as opposed to the "Secret Agent" theme.) It's quite a
haunting tune of my own. I think Tony M. would actually like it.
If there are union problems, I guess I could join ASCAP. This may be
the beginning of a beautiful tribute to Tony and his show.
Sally
You want the instrument? I want the dress and the diamond earrings.
Are you really Woody Allen? You remembered the "blowing into" the
instrument joke when you mentionned the guitar. Very funny. LOL!
Sally
I always wanted to be in a band. Being in a band where you didn't
actually have to MEET the other members would be even better.

We are having a creative impasse. I don't see you in the position of
leading the writing or the music. Also, please don't attempt to visit
Tony personally to give it to him. I seem to remember an attempt on
your part to look up him/his parent years ago while he was on vacation
in Florida.... not okay.

I think it can be done technically,
if the people involved have *some* means of recording their own parts.
If they don't own the necessary hardware themselves,
perhaps they might know someone who has Garageband or some other laptop
multi-tracking software who might be able to help.
I would like to provide the bass track;
Don -- would you be able to do the guitar track?
Steve - keyboard?
Muddy - drums?
Additional instruments could be added depending on what the theme requires;
For Tony, perhaps something with a Samba vibe to it?
I'm just throwing out ideas...
not sure I could actually *compose* the piece myself.
Over to you, Brian.
Sally
hell, i'll try it. who do i get a file from to add a drum part to it?
> hell, i'll try it. who do i get a file from to add a drum part to it?
Muddy,
The track hasn't been written yet;
just trying to gauge if there is enough interest in the project first.
Glad to know you are willing to give it a shot -- stay tuned!
Jess
My voice is still available, Jess, if you're looking for a female
singer.
Sally
keep me posted! i'm ready when it happens......

This may sound like a weird question, but ...
Was there a Looney Tunes or Merrie Melodies short in which the green,
top hat-wearing, cane-twirling bullfrog -- Michigan J. Frog, more
recently known as the 'WB frog' -- sang a brief ditty containing the
(climactic) phrase "ragtime band?" ('Rag-time baaaaand!' *'Mi-re
meeeee-yoh!'*)
Brady
It was The Michigan Rag.
