For those who haven't heard, Steve Barton died unexpectedly of heart
failure on Saturday. He was only 47. What a great loss for musical
theatre.

It's been reported at Playbill Online and Broadway.com. Here's the
official statement:

http://www.musicals-unlimited.net/sbs/death.html

And here's the Associated Press obituary:

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010725/us/deaths_742.html

As much as many here are huge Miss Saigon fans, Phantom was my first
musical, my first cast recording, and the reason why I became a
musical theatre fan. This news saddens me very much.

I think the "Phantom" is the real jewel of any of Lloyd Webber's show. Barton
played the autocratic part very well.

I loved Phantom on stage, but I can't sit and listen to the cast recording.
I personally think Jesus Christ Superstar is the best of the Lloyd Webber
musicals.

I don't know who Steve Barton was, but I'm sure he'll be missed. 47 really
is a young age to die from heart failure:-(

Yeah, JCS probably is my favorite ALW show now, but I had a very
intense period where I ate breathed and slept Phantom. LOL :p

He was the original Raoul in both London and on Broadway, and he later
went on to play the title role on Broadway. Since then he has done a
lot of work in Europe. A friend of mine is absolutely crazy about a
show he did (in German I think) called Tanz der Vampire. I think he
was supposed to be in the upcoming Broadway cast of that show. *sigh*

I love all of them. I was about to type what my fave is, but I really can't. It
tends to change with my mood. Recently I've been really into "Whistle Down the
Wind", but I guess if I really really had to pick on, it'd be "Song & Dance",
cos that's always in my top list of musicals.

I don't really care for the genre of opera, but like I said before, I really
enjoy Phantom of the Opera on stage. I never really liked the music from it,
but it is completely different seeing it live.

Ditto to that. My approximate reaction after seeing "Phantom" was: "Hey, maybe
musicals don't suck." I'm so sad to hear this news.

LOL, so did I! My favorite ALW show, though, is probably Evita, or maybe Song
and Dance. Definitely NOT Cats!

Personally I love them all. There are certain songs from each show which are
very well written. When I was at college, studying music, ALW music was frowned
upon. In fact all show-type music was seen as non-classical, and
non-innovative! Looks were given by staff, if someone were heard jamming ALW
tunes. I choose to do music with animation (cartoon music) as my final year
project... even that didn't go down too well with certain autocratic thinkers
within the music division. It is just so snobbery!! I think attitudes have
changed slightly since I was there.

For some unknown reason, I intend always to do things the opposite way round.
Instead of seeing a show, then buying the S/track, I intend to buy the s/track
first, then many years later finally get around to seeing the show. When I
study and learn the score, I get more excited when I actually do get around to
seeing the show.

I agree, that the Phantom seen live is beautiful. The set is emaculate. Does
one ever notice that in all of ALW shows, there is no rise of curtain at the
beginning. The audience look at the stage from the very start. I find that
alone quite interesting.

My order of preference to ALW shows go as:

Phantom of the Opera
Evita
Cats (yes, the Jellicle Ball dance sequence is excellent!)
Jesus Christ Superstar
Starlight Express (I'm a very good friend to Richard Stilgoe)
Whistle Down the Wind
Joseph
Song and Dance
Beautiful Game (I have yet to discover!)

Have I left any show out?

Hello from Nicky

Yes I have, "Aspects of Love". Really there should be no preferences, I love
songs and instrumentations from all of them. "Aspects of Love" would be a good
show for Lea to do. Though it is her choice, whether she likes the show or not?

Yeah- you left out the show he did in the early '80s called "This Thing Is
Just A Pile Of Crap, But You'll Go Anyway Because I'm ALW, And The
Music Is Such That Your Dog Could Have Written It".

Hardly anyone remembers it, but it remains my personal favorite. The
title was a tad long, though.

I am the same way. I have only seen one or two shows first. I have heard the
Phantom cast recording first, that's why I didn't really get my hopes up
when seeing the show. I was pleasantly surprised. The only show I saw in
which I didn't run out to get a cast recording was Cats. I hated Cats.

This is my order:

1. JCS
2. Joseph
3. Phantom
4. Evita( I have the movie soundtrack)

Cats is the only other ALW show that I have heard of, but that will never go
on a best of list, lol. I haven't heard any other show of his.

I have friends that didn't take to Cats, they found it hard to follow the story
line. Personally, I love the show. All that dance and singing, there is so much
energy. "The Polical Dogs" is one of my favs.

Sunset Boulevard. IMO, it had some catchy tunes, but I liked the original 1950
film a lot more. The ALW musical seemed like a "dumbed-down" version of the
movie.

Yeah, but ALW later renamed it and added roller-skating trains, didn't he?

I hated it but found this and thought it was funny.

>^,,^< >^,,^< >^,,^< >^,,^<

"Cats" is the longest-running show on Broadway to date. The show
romanticizes and shrouds in
mystery the lives and habits of
America's most popular pet. Yet, even with the lively dancing and
popular
songs, "Cats" doesn't seem
to capture the true-to-life behavior of our feline companions. Below is
a
list of what "Cats" would have to
do to more accurately portray the true essence of cats.

* Audience members would enter the auditorium only to find their seats
had
been clawed and covered
with fur.

* The antagonist in the show would be a giant vacuum cleaner.

* Sometimes the cast would perform, but sometimes not -- depending on
their
mood.

* Performers would leap off the stage and run up the aisles at the
recorded
sound of a can opener in
the lobby.

* When certain audience members opened their playbills, a cast member
would
attempt to lay down on
it.

* In the middle of a performance various cast members would curl up and
go
to sleep, even in the
middle of a song.

* For no apparent reason, cast members would randomly run to the lobby,
and
then back to the stage at
top speed. They would then continue as if nothing had happened.

* A special audience member would find a headless bird in his/her seat
after the intermission.

* Snack bar employees would constantly be reprimanding cast members for
walking on the counter.

* Open the stall door and guess who is drinking from the toilet.

* Part of the performance would include the cast climbing and
shredding the theater curtains.

* The stage would be stained from someone coughing up a hairball and
then
eating it.

* Performers would find sand in the lobby ashtrays and -- well, we
don't
have to draw a picture here, do
we?

* The show would need to be stopped several times to allow cast
members to "bathe" themselves.

* Most of the final act would consist of the cast just staring at the
audience.

* The big finale would feature a giant ball of yarn, feathers on a
pole,
and stray strands of dental floss.

* Theater patrons waiting outside the stage door after performances
would
get their legs rubbed, if they
were lucky.

* Cast members would never cash their paychecks, just play with them.

I guess I'm pro-Cats as well. It'll never be my favorite show but it's
entertaining enough, and if it introduces one child to a life-long
love of theatre, I'm all for it.
