Hi, Tin! I have something for you to think about, sori. (here I go
again...here I go again...oopps, don't press any keys yet!)

Before Lea Salonga and Monique Wilson bacame long time rivals, there
was a pretty young girl named "Lilet". And for those of you who don't
know her. She once bacame Lea's tough singing rival in the 80's (deja
vu, anyone?) before Miss Saigon. Both girls (Lea and Lilet) were very
very promising and both were blessed with a very beautiful voice.

Lilet first appeared in a PEPSI TV commercial which was shot entirely
in London. The commercial bacame a hit and Lilet - a household name.
She later joined the youth oriented group "That's" in which Lea was
also a member. They did movies together for VIVA films, such flicks as
"Pik Pak Boom, Dear Diary" which also starred Herbert Bautista and
Regine Velasquez.

That time, Lea's with the Puerto Rican pop group called "Menudo"
waiting for her big break to come and Lilet was more popular. I
remember, I was barely 10 years and I had a big crush on her. I did
everything so my mom would accompany me to watch her sing in a school
event. Whenever she appears on TV, make sure nobody can change the
channel.

After a while, intrigue came. People started comparing Lea and Lilet
and a feud was created. As far as I can remember, Lilet's mother was
saying "not-so-good" things about Lea...that her daughter made it to
the international scene w/ the "London" commecial thing...that the
reason why Lea joined the group Menudo cause she's taking her chance
to be recognized not only here but also abroad...etc..etc...Lea and
her mom Mrs. Ligaya kept silent. They knew it was the right thing to
do.

Then.... "MISS SAIGON" finally came...Lea Salonga stood up among the
rest...by being handpicked along w/ a dozen filipino hopefuls to be
part of theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh's newest production: MISS
SAIGON....Lea was raised among the 1,000 aspiring Saigon auditionees
and was offered to play the leading role "Kim" together with the
equally talented and cute co-thespian Monique Wilson who was offered
to play bargirl Mimi and "Kim" understudy/substitute.
It catapulted them to int'l fame.

And on Lilet's part, as far as I know she also tried her luck in
Saigon but she did'nt make it. I believe that beauty comes with great
responsibility and it takes more than just talent and beauty to make
it there. Having a stage mother is also difficult. The last time I
heard about her was that she chosed to pursue a college degree and
totally quit showbiz. And now she's working...

Some of my friends even said that if Lilet had pursued her singing
career, she could've been a better singer than Lea with a voice as
beautiful as hers and a range wider. (any reaction, Tin?)

In fairness with her, some of my friends said she's a very nice and
obedient girl. They happened to see her in campus. I really wish she'd
make a comeback 'cause I believe in her talent too.......

But as of this time , Lea reigns...........

Lilet... man, the industry needs a voice like hers...

I remember her as a really nice, sweet young girl. Her mom was sweet too,
from what I remember. I don't recall any negative words ever spoken by her
in our presence, or even behind our backs.

I'm bewildered as to why she just disappeared. She was certainly one of the
most talented young singers of that generation (as well as really pretty)...
'tis a shame, since in my opinion, her crystal, pure quality is so beautiful
to listen to.

And by the way, it was a COKE commercial, not PEPSI.

I remember that commercial! She appeared in that commercial initially
singing something like "I am the future of the world....", and
eventually joined by other young people of different races. I
remember being so proud of her as a Filipino.

Didn't you appear in a VIVA movie with her? Was it Pik Pak Boom?

I remember Lilit! She's more talented and prettier than Lea.
But what became Lea is now was coupled with hardwork
and persistence and of course "LUCK".

Hold it! I'm not stopping anyone from posting anything. I don't have that
right. I'm sorry if that's how you took it. I'm not imposing anything, not
dictating what can or cannot be posted here or talked about here. This NG
is cool because we get to talk about a LOT of other things besides Lea. =)

Why not watch Dear diary and Pik Pak Boom? Lilet did sing in these
movies. Oh, I liked her version of Somewhere over the rainbow w/
Michael de Mesa on piano. She also sang a Ryan Cayabyab composition
which title I could'nt remember. She's really good.

She was actually able to take more control of it. I remember going away on
summer vacation to the States... when I left, she still had it... when I
came back, it was more polished. Amazing what 2 months can do, eh?

Oops, I forgot about those! I can't remember Lilet's voice, though... I
haven't watched those in quite a long time. I didn't even watch those
movies more than twice (I have a copy of those somewhere). Didn't like them
that much. Just liked and recorded them because of Lea.

Yeah, I was a fan of hers when I was a kid. Enjoyed her singing a lot.

I think "I'd like to teach the world to sing" was sung in another COKE
commercial...I remember this commercial, a woman w/ her kids went to a
hilltop and said "you know kids, something happened right here twenty
years ago..." then she began to sing "I'd like to give a hope and
furnish it with love...grow apple trees and honeybees and snow white
turtle doves...", this song's also included in Lea's "I'd like to
teach..." album.

It was sung in another COKE commercial. A woman went to a hilltop w/
her kids and said to them "you know guys, something happened exactly
right here 20 years ago!" then she bagan to sing "I'd like to give the
worlda hope and furnish it w/ love...grow apple trees and honey bees
and snow white turtle doves..." it's a cute song actually, included in
Lea's album w/ the same title.

I remember Lilet coming to Hawaii when I was living there back in the
90s. I distinctly remember her radio interview with Victor Wood. She
even commented that in Manila Victor Woods was presumed dead because
no one has heard from him. Of course, Mr. Woods laughed it off. A few
months after the Hawaii trip Lilet disappeared from spotlight and
Victor Woods went back to the Philippines. Go figure. I guess the
world isn't big enough for the two of them. LOL

BTW, the radio station is on AM frequency and is the only one in the
U.S. to broadcast all-Filipino talk/music 24 hours a day. The one,
the only 1270 KNDI . :-) I know of a Filipino radio in California
but have never listened to it because it is fee-based. In fact, I am
not sure if they are still in existence.

Peace out, y'all!
