Lea Salonga has a new love
Yes, Lea Salonga is in love again. "You should see the sparkle in
her eyes everytime she's with the guy," says a friend of the
singer-actress. The reason for that sparkle, the guy, is Robert
Chien-half-Chinese, half-Japanese, born and raised in California.
"He's cute! Very nice!" says Lea.
She met him while doing Flower Drum Song in Los Angeles last
year. "But he is not an actor!" the international star wants to make
that clear. He works for a computer start-up company in L.A. He
is Lea Salonga's new boyfriend-her word, not ours.
It's never easy to look for romance in your life when you're Lea
Salonga. When the world is your stage, there is no telling when the
next big audition will be, which continent, where the next musical
will premiere where you, incidentally, will play the lead. But there
have been attempts.
The first was with Richard Grau, an investment counselor she met
in New York. June 1999, people were talking about how the two
already have wedding plans. August 1999, people were talking
about the break-up. She reportedly dumped him via e-mail.
In the last quarter of 2000, she gave romance another shot when
she fell in love with the theater actor Michael Lee, a
Korean-American whom she met during the final days of the
Manila production of They're Playing Our Song. Shortly after the
last performance, Lea was sending text messages to everyone that
saying she's in love.
The relationship ended early last year because, according to a
friend, "they don't think the long-distance love affair was working."
When her work is New York-based, his work was in L.A. When
she finally was in L.A., he will be needed in New York. Michael
was the sun to Lea's moon, as that Miss Saigon song goes. "Laging
naglilihis ang landas nila," a close friend says, "but now they still
talk, and they're very, very good friends."
And now Robert. Or Rob, as Lea likes to call him. They were
introduced by Robert's cousin who was in the cast of Flower Dru
Song. It took Christine, the cousin, months before she was able to
convince Lea to go on a date with Robert. After a three-hour long
conversation with Robert on the phone, Lea agreed to have dinner
with him.
The relationship is in its third month now. "Hopefully things would
go for the best, but it's still very new. It's doing pretty well," Lea
says.
So exceedingly well, she's already into knitting, a hobby that
Robert's mom had introduced to her. "On weekends, that's what
they do, Lea, Robert - an only son - and his mom. They knit and
watch TV at the mom's home. Lea's already made a bonnet, an
she's now finishing a scarf," a source close to Lea said. Both are
crazy over sun tofu, a Korean dish, and both love to sing. "He sings
in the car," Lea relates. "He loves to sing in the car. He sings
anything. He'll put on a CD and then he'd sing. Sa kotse lang
talaga."
Robert recently flew in from L.A. just to attend the premiere of the
Manila production of Proof where Lea is the lead actress. He got
to meet Ligaya Salonga, Lea's mom, and play golf with Gerard,
Lea's younger brother. The couple also got to watch Joey
Generoso's January concert at the Mandarin Oriental before he
flew back to the U.S.
"He's so malambing, sobrang bait," says a friend describing Lea's
new love. "Very attentive, and he makes sure you're always
comfortable."
Ligaya seems to find Robert a joy, too. "Very nice guy," Mrs.
Salonga was supposed to have told a member of the entertainment
press. "Parang mahal na mahal niya si Lea."*

Im sorry but sometimes i can't believe what i read. Im 18 and in the
sixth form (for those out of the UK it is two years extra you can do
at school to get more qualifications and points to get into UNI as we
leave at 16) and there isn't half as much bitching that goes on here.
I can't believe you have the nerve to pass judgement on Lea Salonga's
love life. the poor women comes in here to chat about her carreer and
tell us stuff about herself and you take the mickey out of her. by
passing judgement on her love life. Some people don't find the one til
they are well into they're thirties. She has had relationships in the
past and fair enough they haven't worked out but surely enough we
should praise her for not rushing into anything or making the wrong
decision surely she should be praised for this and seen as a role
model that you can be happy and single and rushing into something that
could be wrong is not the right thing to do.
So stop[ the bitchin otherwise we could lose Lea.

After a few relationships that didn't work, one would think that some
experience comes into the selection process. Rob is the embodiment of
everything that I ever fell in love with with my past boyfriends, and even
in my friends, so I know.

As for an ideal wedding, I don't know how it's going to look or be like, but

Cheryl, you have no idea how spot on you are... his brothers -- Justin,
Taylor and Jordan -- are 21, 17 and 13. Rob is 31. And yes, he does live
in his own house... been on his own since his 20's.
