My mother met Lea Salonga a few years ago. Well, to make a long story short,
Lea acted snobbish/b*tchy when all my mom wanted was an autograph to give to me
while she vacationed in New York and I, in Los Angeles. After this incident, I
didn't appreciate Lea as a person as much as I had before this whole ordeal.
I've heard from other people that this is how her personality is.
I was wondering if being "in love" with Richie Grau has changed her attitude
and made her more mature in this regard. I certainly hope so...

PS Is there a newsgroup (not the message boards at Ron San Juan's page,
Netlink's, or the official Miss Saigon page) on AOL dedicated entirely to
Miss Saigon? If so, let me know...

Hmmm . . . Well, I suppose everyone has their off-days, to be fair and not
discredit your mom's account or anything . . . But, from my experience,
Lea is very sweet about autographs; after a performance of "Les Mis" in
Honolulu, she stuck around till everyone had the autographs/pictures they
wanted. :)

As far as I'm concerned, I don't disagree with anyone who posted against this,
nor to the person who posted for this. It's true that people do have bad days,
and maybe there is a side of her that we've never seen before. But everyone's
getting really defensive about it..at least that's the impression I'm getting
from all the responds to this comment. It's an OPINION. His personal one at
that too. If you personally disagree with this, fine, but don't get all that
defensive. But that's just what I think =). Take care and smile!

I think there's something wrong with my AOL newsgroup. I've only seen one
response on the newsgroup regarding my post. Can someone please tell me why
this is? I haven't heard anyone's opinion, but one response and one email
regarding the subject matter of "lea's attitude." I would like to join in the
forum but I haven't seen any other peoples' opinion regarding this matter
because of the AOL format and possibly an AOL glitch.
Thank you...

I've never met Lea and most likely never will..but with out looking back to
your post ...I don't recall you telling the circumstances behind your mother's
asking for an autograph.
Maybe your mother interrupted her at dinner, or while she was talking to
someone else....maybe your mother simply was being rude...intentionally or
not....or she just misread Lea's attitude. Possibly Lea was being snobbish....I
don't know.....You wanted a response there it is....

Nah...it was after a performance of Miss Saigon a few years ago in New York.
My mom waited at the backstage entrance for a while waiting for the performers
to come out. When my mom approached Lea, my mom handed her a pen to sign the
Playbill and I guess the pen ran out of ink or something but the final outcome
of the signature just read "le-" and I know that she usually signs her full
name but just the "L" and the "E" was there. After Lea did this she just
turned away and talked to some other fans. She did, however, say "I can't talk
right now, talk to my mom [Ligaya]" A few minutes later, Jonathan Pryce came
out and was hospitable enough to greet his fans, including my mom, which made
her very happy :)
I agree that maybe she was having an "off" day but this experience stuck in my
mind for a long time. I'm sure that many of you completely adore Lea Salonga
and her talents and are already offended with everything that I am saying.
Again, this was my mom's experience, therefore making it MY experience as
well. So please forgive me if I've insulted anyone on this newsgroup.

-eaRL-

PS I am still looking for a Miss Saigon NG with the same format as this AOL
one. Thanks for the time...

I think Earl meant more than a few years ago......when he mentioned Jonathan
Pryce, we have to think at least circa 1991 when "Saigon" opened on Broadway.

Can't fault Earl for not remembering the exact year, can we?

That's probably my problem too then. I'm from AOL and I've posted several
messages in this newsgroup but I didn't see them anywhere. AOL sucks?

Jen Jen (and others) have been talking about using MS Outlook Express with
AOL newsgroups. Outlook Express can be downloaded for free from the MS web
site and I believe is part of the WIN98 CD.

Is there a public source for information on how to use OE with AOL? I've
heard several people complain about AOL's native newsgroup program...

Hi Dave,

Your birthday's coming up pretty soon, isn't it??

So, you're saying that AOL Doesn't let you access their newsgroup server
with OE or other Internet standard NG readers?

What you've been talking about is getting "around" AOL by using a "public"
NG server?? Yes, I think you're right about the difficulty of finding a
good, reliable free NG server that allows posting. This seems like quite a
bother, just to keep AOL.

If that's the case, some of you might consider switching to your friendly
neighborhood ISP (Internet Service Provider). They all have their own
newsgroup and email servers (w/o 14,000,000 customers to deal with).
Especially if you are already comfortable with OE or Netscape. Does AOL
offer enough extras to make it worth using proprietary software? I know it's
prob easier at first to have a "all-in-one" setup. But after you are
experienced?? There are some really good local ISPs, offering excellent
service and support. Many ISPs offer a startup CD with everything you need.

Not putting down AOL. But if it's not meeting your needs... Just a
thought... :>

Since we have so many AOL users here, would someone mind explaining
AOL's advantages? I don't think that I've ever heard one good thing
(well, maybe one or two..) about AOL and yet, it seems like half of the
people on the web use it. I just don't understand the appeal...

In AOL's defense, all I can say is that it's a good place for me to have my own
webpages (if I'm not at the allotted 10MB, I'm very very close!)

Also, so many people I know are on it, or are on AIM, and it's pretty hard to
not find someone online (except maybe now, just because it's an early Sunday
morning....).

There are other things too, but in closing, all I can say is sometimes certain
people can surprise you and show up on AOL one day.

I believe someone said this before: AOL comes preinstalled in some of
the new PCs/Macs, AOL does HEAVY marketing of their CD, (Although I
wish they sent out diskettes because those things saved me from buying
diskettes while I was in college.) and it's sooooo ungodly easy to
use. But I myself prefer my good old ISP. You can do soooo many things
with an ISP that you certainly can't do on AOL. Nevermind the
webspace, there are plenty of places you can get 10 or 11 megs of free
space. I just like the idea of not having to login/out to change
screen names (I know that the 4.0 version changed that.). I like the
idea of shelling out into UNIX (wow! my own scripts!). I like the FTP
ability and heck, cable modem is just soooo fast.. hehehe..

My husband uses AOL a lot because he says that's the only way he can
still keep in touch with his ex-co-workers. He likes the idea of
IM'ing them when they're on. Certainly, if we didn't have AOL, he
wouldn't be able to do that. It just kills me that I pay twice a month
for internet service: once a month to AOL and once a month to Comcast.
That's 60 bucks of online cash! Ugh! Ah well, everyone pays for their
vices. =(

Hi all,

Thanks "Amander" for changing the thread name. First of all, I would like to
thank everyone for keeping this discussion about facts. This would have been
a raging flame war in many other NGs... It seems apparent that many of you
might not be online if it weren't for AOL. So, in that respect, at least,
it's a good thing. :>

My concern was that people were having problems (especially losing NG
messages) with AOL. And going to great lengths to work around AOL. I wanted
people to know that there are other viable options out there... Especially
when you've got your bearings on the Internet and now that AIM is available
to anyone on the Internet.

If anyone is interested in exploring using a local ISP for their Internet
needs, I am willing to help, as are others here, I'm sure...

Mike

PS - Did anyone see the news about AOL maybe buying Netscape??

It can definitely be done. You might have to download a different
version of the software, though. Try http://www.download.com or maybe
even the Netscape homepage (since they decided to tack AIM onto 4.5.)

Thanks for your answers to this thread, peoples! :)

I was wrong! You can get your own IM name without being an AOL
subscriber. I just tried it out today and I think it does have
something to do with downloading the latest software. Thanks Scott!

Well, when you open the AIM console, choose New User.
Click on the Sign On button.
A dialog box will appear and you will be prompted to either:
-- Register a new screen name
OR
-- Use your AOL screen name
If you choose Register a new screen name, the screen name registration
appears. Follow all instructions.

Ta-dah!

My new AIM screen name is AteLeaFan. =D
