The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has granted the petition of famed
singer-actress Lea Salonga for her husband's permanent residency in the
Philippines, officials disclosed yesterday.

BI Executive Director Roy Almoro said the bureau's board of
commissioners approved the issuance of a permanent resident visa to
Robert Charles Chien, a 35-year-old Chinese-American, in view of his
marriage to Salonga, a Filipino citizen, who filed the petition in his
favor.

Section 13 (a) of the Philippines Immigration Act allows foreigners
married to Filipinos to acquire permanent resident status in the
country, Almoro explained.

As a permanent resident, Chien may now enter and exit the country
anytime and stay here without having to extend his visa. (Emily G.
