I would like to express my admiration to both Lea Salonga & Monique
Wilson for having such beautiful lyrical voices. I have'nt got a Lea
Broadway CD yet but I will surely buy one. Yesterday, I was able to
buy Monique Wilson's Classic Gershwin CD which I bought in the NVC
office, and wow! It was so great! Upon hearing it, my granma asked "Is
that Julie Andrews?" When I said it was Monique, Lea's understudy, she
said "I like the way Lea and that other girl sing, It's very clear and
round." I totally agreed co'z I myself was mesmerized to hear how Ms.
Wilson interpreted the Gershwin lyrics so very naturally just like
what the commentator said on the album. One more thing, in some of her
songs, Monique even sounded like Lea so much (I hope you won't make a
fuss qbout this). Both in high & low pitch. Like in the songs
"Summertime, My man's gone now, How long has this been going on, But
not for me and Love is here to stay". She was also able to sing
"Someone to watch over me" very well. I think Lea and Monique have the
same singing technique and voice qualities. And these qualities as
well as their acting abilities made both of them a "stand-out".

Thank you so much for the attention you'd given to my post. I've been
a long time fan of both Lea and Monique Wilson. I don't have Lea's
broadway CD yet so I cannot comment as of this time. But with Monique
Wilson's CD, I'd like to give good comments. This is the very first
time that I've fully appreciated Ms. Wilson's singing. I could say
that on this CD, she's able to match Lea's singing. Ms. Wilson
interpreted all the songs very well and clear. She was able to create
a character with each song particularly the songs "But not for me" and
"Love is here to stay". Ms. Wilson's voice is full of emotions and
feelings which I believe the songs really require. And on that part
she suceeded. Her rendition of "Someone to watch over me",
"Summertime" and "Embraceable you" was also very good. Although it may
sound a bit thin at the start, it turn out to be a round one too. It
seemed like, Monique was acting while singing it. Should it be called
an "acting voice"? Ms. Wilson's voice quality is also comparable to
the likes of Paige O' Hara (Disney's Belle "Beauty & the Beast") and
Jodi Benson (Ariel in The Little Mermaid). Even Lea particularly in
the song "How long has this been going on?", Monique's low pitch is
very similar to Lea's like in the lines "I repeat". It was really
really great! Lea, Monique as well as the Disney singers are all
fabulous!!!

I do have!!! I bought the tape back in college 'cause I got curious
when some friends said that Monique's singing daw is very similar with
Lea's singing. Kasi when I first heard her singing the movie theme
"Kung Sa Akin Lang" in which she won a best supporting actress award,
I did'nt like it upon hearing it first. But later on, I realized it's
very very good pala. I was'nt even contented that I even bought
Monique's self-titled CD. Unfortunately someone robbed the CD and all
I have left is the cassette tape. She even wrote the lyrics of the
song "The Children of the World" dedicated to the street children all
over the world. Actually, Monique used to shelter street kids here in
Manila but due tolack of funds, these kids were refered to DSWD. But
as far as I know she still helps poor kids until now. That's one big
reason why I admired her more. She mentioned about this street kids
stuff in that album.

Dennis, you can surf the Musicscape website. It's the company that
produced Monique's CD. Just type www.Musicscape.net. The producer of
the CD was watching Ms. Wilson's performance in the filipino musical
"El Fili" and was greatly impressed with Wilson's lyrical soprano
voice. He immediately signed her up for his own label. If you love
listening to classical songs, I'm sure you're gonna love this one. I
liked it co'z it's something new to my ears. It's like giving Monique
a fresh approach on this one.

I just don't know where in the states do they sell this CD.

I see from the website that this is a Japanese pressing! Cool! For a
minute I thought it was a local indie recording by New Voice.

MONIQUE WILSON / Monique Sings Gershwin
(MusicScape)

Best known for a three-year run in London as Kim in the hit musical
Miss Saigon, Philippine singer Monique Wilson, in her first role as a
recording leader, chose to interpret songs by America's most famous
and original composer, George Gershwin. Recorded in Tokyo with
tastefully sparse backing from pianist Pierre Grill and bassist Ernie
Provencher, Wilson renders Gershwin classics such as "Nice Work If You
Can Get It" and "Summertime" in a clear, unembellished voice that on
first listen sounds a bit thin, but gradually grows on one. While
Wilson's renditions might not supersede those by Ella Fitzgerald and
the many others who have sung Gershwin, they are notable in being
perhaps the first Gershwin album recorded by an Asian actress of the
stage.

I still have the tape. Don't worry, After my CD/Cassette component
gets fixed, I'll record the songs for you although the tape's quality
is'nt as good as the CD (the CD kasi was stolen). If you're
interested, I'll include other broadway songs of Monique Wilson from
the cocert entitled "Memories of Broadway". I happened to record it
from TV to Audio Cassette.

In this concert, Monique rendered different broadway songs like "As If
We Never Said Goodbye", "If Ever I'd Leave you", "Meadowlark", "On the
Street Where You Live", "As Long As He Needs Me", "I Don't Know How to
Love Him" and many many more. She had duets with Audie Gemora too.
They sang "One Hand, One Heart", "Yes, I can!" and "I'm Gonna Wash
that Man Right Out of my Hair". Audie also sang "I Dreamed a Dream".

Too bad, I was'nt able to record the songs from "Miss Saigon" such as
"Sun and Moon" and "The Last of Night of The World" which they also
sang. Aside from Audie Gemora, they guested the group, The Company and
the New Voice Company performers were there too. They did "Promises,
Promises", "Memory" w/ The Company as well as songs from filipino
musicals like "Magbalik ka na Mahal" (sung by Monique) from the
musical "Rama Hari",a song from "Noli the Musical" and "Katy".

Among my favorites is Ms. Wilson's rendition of "Since I Don't Have
you" (from Grease). In this song, Wilson sang like Lea Salonga and I
loved it. Some songs lack intro 'cause I was'nt really prepared to
record it. I just happened to surf the channels and saw it on ABC
channel 5. The sound quality in the cassette tape is'nt very good but
It's clear.

If you are interested, you can e-mail me. But as of this time my CD
component is still unfixed so it'll take some time before I could make
a copy. By the way, do you have any Monique or Lea stuff you can trade
w/ me??? Just asking...

Monique's singing is very passionate on this album. Now I know why the
critics in London when she's still doing Saigon commented that her
"Kim" is more passionate and stronger willed. In the song "But Not For
Me", she had extra power in her high notes that she even sounded like
a classically trained mezzo-soprano.

I've just downloaded a very nice duet of Monique Wilson singing with Nonoy
Zuniga - sorry I can't recall the name of the song.

Sure, no problem. http://www.audiogalaxy.com

Now, I did hear that this site is going through some legal battles at the
moment - most of their songs seems to be blocked. Nonetheless, just type in
Monique Wilson or Zuniga and see what the results are. Good Luck!

Audiogalaxy is dead. Don't bother downloading it. They've settled with
the RIAA and it's now opt-in. Songs are only unblocked if the
copyright holder asks them to be.

I could'nt continue the search due to copyright restrictions, anyway
thanks for giving me the link. well I do know one of Monique songs
there called "Kung Iibigin mo" from her self-titled debut album (VIVA
Records). I have a copy of all her OPM songs. It was her 2nd cut from
her LP, the first one was "Kung Sa Akin Lang" which was the theme from
the VIVA movie "Kapag Iginuhit ang hatol ng Puso" in which Monique
received a best supporting actress award. I really liked this filipino
movie in which she played the role of "Lally", a bargirl. Monique's
portrayal was perfect and she was very effective for the role. She
really looked cheap which the role required her to be. Her character
died in the end and we even broke into tears, co'z she died very well.
I just loved it. She's a very passionate actress.
