Hi,

I have just phoned my Landrover dealer with regard to replacing a sticky
thermostat in my Landrover Defender td5 Extreme and have been informed
that it will take between 4-6 hours to replace.

Quite frankly I am incredulous as this is only a 5-10 minute job in any
other vehicle. Is anyone here aware of why this takes so long or am I
just being Bulls**ted to by the dealer?

Thanks in advance...John.

John, ask your dealer to look at the Official Repair Operation Time
manual section 26.45.09 "Thermostat Td5 - test - includes fit new
thermostat if necessary" and see if they can explain why there it
states 1.10 Hrs ;o)

(Note Operations include drain, refill, bleed system and pressure test
where necessary)

Follow the upper rad hose towards the engine, where it connects to the engine
is "usually" where they are located. Does it look to you like it is easy to
get at?
If so, do it your self.
If it looks like you have to tear down half the engine, let them do it.

wish I could be more help :(

Pete

Actually with the Td5 is is quite a simple job as the thermostat is
not located in the 'usual' place but is at the bottom of the Left Hand
Side (Right hand side looking from the front of the vehicle) of the
radiator and is in it's own cream coloured plastic housing (which is
part of the thermostat too). It is held in place with 3 hose clips and
although the WSM says remove the fan you can actually get it out and
back with very little bother. The Part Number for the thermostat is
PEM100990 and will cost around 16.18 GBP ex VAT genuine.

Thanks Rob,

It just didn't sound right to me. And whilst the car is still under
warranty I don't want these clowns to be overcharging me in the future.

Mind you these are same people who bolted my front mudflaps directly
through the guard flares, forgot to replace the dipstick after the last
service and never stamp or update the service log unless reminded to do
so. And this isn't some backyard dealer this is the offical Land Rover
dealer for Townsville Queensland.

Anyway enough whinging on my part. Thanks once again.

Regards...John.

The more I listen to these tales of incompetent Land Rover dealers in the US
and OZ, the more I wonder if LR have contracted out their training to Coco
the clown! I mean dealers in the UK aren't exactly at the top of my
christmas card list but they are nowhere near as bad as they seem abroad.

Is it LR or is it the locals?

OH YES THEY BLOODY WELL ARE!
consider:_
cure swivel housing oil leak by draining out oil, but charging for
oil seal replacement.
not fitting new brakes as billed, charging full whack, then blaming
poor braking on tyres.
Charging for skimming v8 head 3 times , then charging the "punter"
5000+ UKP for a replacement engine.
Need I go on.
I avoid them like the plague.
In fact I suspect that a good way of

There's A Land Rover dealer in Montreal who charged a customer of mine for a
full exhaust system on a V8 Disco - cats and all - but only replaced the back
box - the bit that shows, and another garage, on a Range Rover, wanted to
replace the full front axle 'cos the CV joint had gone ( they were not a LR
dealership)
