Going to fit a Webasto aux-heater into my 2000 Defender 110 CSW in a few
weeks. Picking it up on Friday.
Unlike the previous unit I fitted to my last car, a Discovery TDi, this
needs a direct pumped feed from the fuel tank, rather than simply
sitting inline with the injector return pipe. Apparently, the line
pressure is too high in a Td5.
To do this, I understand that I have to drop the tank so I can get at
the fuel sender unit on top to fit an extra fuel extractor.
Does anyone have any tips or handy hints on doing this job - any nasty
surprises to watch out for?
I've already made the mistake of filling the tank right up yesterday
(blame it on working Nights), hence the delay in fitting it until I've
used up enough fuel to make it manageable. Doh!
Cheers,
Mark
Personally I don't see the need to remove the tank to do this job.
Could you not just fit a "T" piece to the main fuel line and feed the heater
from there ??
Or am I being dim ?

When you get to the point where you really understand your computer
It's probably obsolete.
I'm also planning to fit a webasto heater, still looking on ebay :) I have
heard off someone here in holland who also fitted one, You need to drop the
fueltank, but that is not to difficult I understand, and from the manuals I
get the impression that there is a "spare" connection on the fuelpump
assembly for these purposes. Instead you can try to cut a hole in the
floor, right above the assembly..... Also handy for future repairs.... :)
There is a company in germany who uses the fuel pump from the TD5, with a
addition pressure regulator. so you dont have the deal with the fuel tank.

Anyway succes.

Too high a pressure apparently.
Thanks anyway,
Mark
Thanks - I'll check that URL out. Thought about making an access hole in
the floor, but my metal work skills are not so hot.

What pressure ???? Take a feed from the pipe that feeds the pump, (or is
it pump in tank ?)

Cheers Mike - a bit of good news at the end of a long day!

Not 100% sure on this. I think the Td5 is pump in tank. It's only about
GBP3 for the part to go on the tank - just have to drop it to get it in!
Both Webasto, and the dealer/agent I'm buying the kit from agree that
you have to fit a separate fuel extractor on the tank, and leave the
existing pipes alone.. The unit has it's own pump, and I want to avoid
any conflict where the vehicle pump (wherever situated) back sucks from
the heater (too tired to be technical!) and renders it unusable when the
engine is running.
The old unit was much easier to fit! Progress I suppose.
