If you have a look a bit further down this NG you will see a bit about TD5
useless in cold weather, i was surprised when i had it explained that there
is only 4 glow plugs in a 5 cylinder motor and has something to do with the
timer for heating the plugs and landrover not wanting to go to the expense
of making a system to run 5 glow plugs etc.

My mistake apparently only the TD4 is a 100% BMW unit and the TD5 had
already been designed by LR and was just built by BMW, but will we ever know
which company chose not to implement a 5th glow plug?

Its a pity they designed a diesel that needed them, my 300Tdi doesn't seem
to ever need the glow plugs and a friend who converted his 90 to a 300tdi
didn't even bother connecting them

Depends on ambient temp. Diesel is hard to combust at low ambient temps so
the glow plug is there to increase the temp.

I was making the point that 300Tdi's do manage without glow plugs even on
cold ambient temp days, my everyday runnaround astra with an Isuzzu diesel
engine in it always needs the glowplugs to start, even on a warm day

That's a question I've been meaning to ask for some time; do I need to
bother with glowplugs? My 300TDi D110 starts with our without waiting
for the light to extinguish, so far I've been waiting but suspect that
this is only really required when the temperature is very low indeed,
more so than you'll get in England at any rate.

Those very clever people at Audi have thought about the time wasting and so
on the A6 Tdi the glow plugs are activated when you open the drivers door,
so buy the time you have placed bum on seat, got the seat belt on, key in
ignition etc they are up to temp.
Using them all the time I believe helps with the starting/cold running
emissions.

Just a thought, a Freelander with the VW Audi group 1.9 tdi engine, or even
the 6cyl 2.5 tdi, now that would go.

Read it in a road test (CAR mag I think)

If not in UK then perhaps in Europe??

How interesting ! I had an A6 Quattro V6 Tdi when I was working for a
certain major insurance company - although I'm delighted to be not working
for them anymore, how I miss that car! Never knew about the "automatic glow
plug" feature but it certainly always started first time and I never, ever,
let the plugs warm "with the key"!

Wonderful engine - no doubt that it would be rather nice in a Landy - Mike.

Seem to recall seeing somewhere in the handbook that the 300tdi only needs
glow plugs for temps colder than -10 Deg C.

My Defender90 TD5 also starts without glowing.
They are there just in case I guess.

I had an A4 Avant V6 Tdi for a day when my more humble 80 1.9tdi (600 miles
on a fillup, beat that Landrover) was in for a service.
It's one of the few cars I've ever driven in that I would turn off the radio
and wind down the window just to hear the engine under acceleration, great
performance and still 40+ to the gallon.

I know - I know! The V6 is JUST FANTASTIC and I want another one! Still, the
loss of the car is less than the loss of the hassle of working for the
people who provided it!

But I still miss it - fantastic car - smooth - very quick - unbelievable
r/holding - 38ish to the gal - and 20,000+ out of the tyres on a car which
was driven hard, and I mean hard.

I could go on all
y - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - --- - - - - - - - - -- - - - -
but I won't - Mike.
