Ok... LR people......

How do I get the 'trims' from the doors of a Defender (1997). ??

I'd _very_ much appreciate *detailed* instructions. I want to spray a
compound inside the doorsand then replace the trims........... !!

Over to you....... with thanks.

.... Lando.

Remove the door handle (two screws) , winder handle (one bolt) and
lock-button trim (fiddly - clips in and responds to gentle upward pressure)
first.

Door trims are held on with an assortment of little plastic plugs round the
edges and two plastic expansion clips at the top hinge and at the bottom
trailing edge. I suggest using a screwdriver protected with some rag or a
tapered piece of wood to gently prise out the plug at the bottom hinge side
and work your way up and back from there. As you "find" each plug, lever
gently and it should come out without breaking or damaging the door trim.

You'll probably find that some of the plugs will remain in the door frame -
just pull them out and clip them back on to the trim.

The plastic expansion clips really require you to push in the centre
plastic piece which then falls into the door frame and is lost for ever.
Sometimes, with care, the trim can be levered back with the clip intact and
you then push out the centre before replacing the trim.

Be a little gentle with the trim, it's possible to damage it quite easily
and if you apply leverage "between" two plugs you are going to either crack
the trim or rip the actual fitting out of it.

If you break/loose any of the fixings, (and you will) they are easily
obtainable from your local dealer.

Have fun - Mike.

Thanks Mike....!!!

I'll have a go this weekend (if it's not raining). I'm going to spray
some "Penetrol" inside the doors.... it's the 'bees knees' for this sort
of metal protection.

If you've got any ideas for getting a spray 'inside' the windscreen
columns without drilling holes, I'd appreciate some guidance there, too.

Your door trim removal instructions were excellent. Thank you.

Hi lando
very interesting and informative but just one question from a thicko like me
. in my old state the last time I used "penatrol" I purchased it from a
chemists to spray on my "anky for the relief of head-colds and if my memory
serve me right (which it doesn't often!) it was too bloody expensive to
start spraying any were apart from ur anky. Any details please?
may the mud be with you

Blast, when you said "door trim" I was hoping you meant "door decals"
as I hate those cheesy "Defender" speed stripes down the side of my
love, I'd like to get rid of them without causing undue chips of paint
to fall off.

Then again I suppose it doesn't really matter re the paint, perhaps I
should stop being such a softie..

Hey, Ian, ya got me!!! I don't like 'em either!!

I read somewhere, maybe on this group, that using a 'hair dryer' on "hot"
and working along will soften the adhesive and then you can tear 'em
off.... and then clean up with a bit of turps......

Hey, if you _do_ find a reliable method.... post it onto the 'group' will
ya ???....... or anyone else who has DONE it.... not hearsay!!.... ??????

Yep - done it! I used a hot-air paintstripping gun but I guess a hairdryer
would really be better as if you heat the things toooo much they go brittel
and are the devils own work to remove !

Heat gently / peel gently/ - do both "at the same time" - Mike.

OK, Mike.......... The plugs weren't any prob. Neither were the door
handle screws or winder circlip........ But do you think I could figure
out how to remove the lock-button trim or the door opener lever trim to
release their 'captives'. I ( gently but firmly) tried _every_
'whichway'.... And I couldn't get any release at all !!!!!

So I carefully lifted the bottom of the door trim , lifted the plastic at
a corner from it's 'sticky' and sprayed some of the 'potion' into the
_bottom_ part of the internal door........ and replaced all without any
drama.

But I _would_ like to take the _whole_ trim off and do a _complete_ job......

So, Mike...... or anyone else with the patience to simply guide me through
the 'finer points' of removing the lock button trim and the door-opener
lever trim.... and removing the whole door trim _off_ ..........Can you
just run it past me again.... Slowly.

And to think I considered 'Rocket Science' and 'Brain Surgery' as possible
vocational options.....!!!! I can't even get a bloody Defender door trim
off !!!

The lock button trim is held captive with some little dimple thingies and a
sort of small tab - anyway, when you get it out you'll see. I suggest
pushing the button down, press gently against the trim at the point above
the button and then insert a small flat s/driver or similar at the bottom of
the trim.

Lever gently upwards and the trim piece will release.

I forgot about the opener bit - there is a screw lurking just behind the bit
you pull. If you pull the release as if you were opening the door you'll see
it.

Have fun - mail me direct if still having probs - (remove NOSPAM) - Mike.
