Hi All,

I have a Land Rover Freelander 1.8 5 Door, 1999 model.

A problem that I have had quite a few times is that the ABS, Hill
Descent and Traction Control lights stay on while driving.

I have taken the car to my Land Rover dealer who each time resets the
lights, but after a while they come back on again (anywhere from a day
later to 6 months later).

The dealer is now indicating that it is a Shuttle Valve Switch failure
and this means that the ABS system is not working and that it will
require the entire ABS unit to be replaced (which will cost around GBP
1900 or US$ 3000).

Looking at archives of this news group I see that many other people
have also experienced this problem. If anyone knows how their dealer
resolved this issue or if anyone was able to get Land Rover to resolve
the issue at no charge even though the vehicle was out of warranty
(what's the chances) PLEASE let me know. You can e-mail me at
garet...@yahoo.com.

Please let me know of your experiences with this problem as I think
it's time that Land Rover was made to take responsibility for known
problems with their vehicles.

Thanks,

Gareth.

How old was it when the problem first occurred? If it started occurring
within the 3 year warranty period, then you've got a good case for it to be
fixed under warranty, because the dealer didn't fix it properly the first
time.

If it was out of warranty, but not by too much, and it was regularly
serviced (preferably by a Landrover dealer), then get back to the dealer and
have them start negotiations with Landrover Customer Service. This is a well
known problem and, as you've seen, it's very expensive to fix. You'll
probably have to be pretty persistent/insistent with the dealer and there's
no real incentive for them to argue with Landrover on your behalf and
they're reluctant to let you talk to Landrover directly (though there's
nothing stopping you phoning Customer Service to pursue things).

My wife's did the same thing 3 weeks after the warranty expired and the
dealer reset everything in the same way. If it happens again, I shall be
looking to get it fixed properly because the problem originated very close
to the original warranty period.

I get the impression the Landrover see it as a bit of a game - if you're
prepared to put the effort it, they're likely to eventually give in and fix
it.

Had the same on my TD4, caused by the micro switch fitted to the brake
pedal that tells the onboard computer that the brake pedal has been
depressed. The switch looks vey simular to the stop light switch. Had mine
replaced by my dealer under warrenty, no further problems.

Ditto the switch on the brake pedal for me. (TD4)
