I live in between Egham (Surrey) and Maidenhead (Berks) - does anyone have
the membership/contact details for a suitable owners club in this region?
Thanks

Is this also suitable for complete beginners in attempt to learn how to
drive my 4x4 off road??
If so, when would be the best time given that it is a long day 10-6pm..?
Thanks

Before you buy.
A good place to come and get used to your 4x4. Plenty of marshals around to
give advise and help. Much better than going it alone - or going to some of the
commercial sites, where in my experience help is few and far between. There is
an easy course all the way round with harder sections looping off for the
brave, experienced or fool hardy.
Try to miss the early rush and the quagmire towards the end of the day - it can
get rather cut up. I would say 11.30 till you get fed up. It can take about 45
mins to do a full circuit. longer if you stop to watch the hard sections.
watching is also a good way to learn.
See you there.

PS Most 4x4s will give up long after the driver. Just go for it.
Having owned my Series III (109) for a whole week(!) and have never
driven a 4x4 ever - I was a bit skeptical about taking it along given
that we bought it as a towing vehicle only - but it sounded like too
much fun to not try it. Everyone was just SO friendly and helpful. I
turned up knowing nothing and came away having learnt a great deal in a
very short time as well as a few basic observations of my own:
1. NEVER leave home in LR without rags, water and basic toolkit :-)
2. If going off roading - take wellies!
Drove the 30 miles there - no problem. Got there mid afternoon and
stayed till it started to wind down (despite being advised to go
earlier rather than later when it would be really cut up). I parked
outside whilst I decided what I wanted to do - but that was it, the
minute I mentioned that I *might* go round, anyone within earshot was
straight over encouraging me to take the plunge. They quickly checked
out my tyres and explained that they were a little on the small size -
but would get round, and I might find that being a LWB would have a few
problems. Eeek - time to pull out....
They mumbled something about free wheeling hubs to be tightened (or is
it loosened) - god knows what these do anyway? I knew I should have
read up about this, but oh well, everyone sorted me out and made me
feel very much at ease. And up into 4-wheel drive we went...
Everything from that point onwards happened SO fast. Luckily I asked if
someone would come round with me to show me how to drive the course -
which was just as well, having been round now (what they call easy) I
would never have done it on my own..
Luckily only got stuck the once - and was towed out rather efficiently
by some stewards standing nearby. THen on we went. Unfortunately, we
only got a 1/3rd of the way round, my LR could cope no more - and
overheated :( At which point I decided to call it a day and just watch
everyone else.
All in all I was chuffed to bits. The car is 25 years old, and for the
past 14 years I know it has never been off-road yet it looked after me
and gave me an exhilarating ride. So much fun I had, that I was really
disappointed to have to get into my sports convertible this morning
after a fun packed weekend in an old LandRover :(
Everyone checked back with me afterwards to ensure that I enjoyed it,
and to make sure I had enough water, to loosen (or is it tighten) my
fwh's and see us on our way.
So thank you again everyone at HBRO (so exciting, forgot to get
anyone's name) but I had so much fun. It was brilliant. I'm hooked..
When's the next one?

There is another event at Broxhead common, near Farnham, on 20th
November organised by a different club but all welcome.
Also look at the newsgroup uk.rec.cars.4x4 there are quite a few
events advertised there.

(I don't normally cross-post but there is a Broxhead thread running on
