You don't want to be late to your rendezvous because you know that
lateness implies that you think your time is more valuable than the
other person's; you're fed-up with wankers telling you how "crazybusy"
they are; and your most recent ex-girlfriend sent you to the Landmark
Advanced Course as a break-up present so now you refuse to be late
because you're convinced that "language creates reality" and you must
"be your word." You don't care if Werner Erhard stole everything he
taught from Heidegger, Wittgenstein, and Sartre -- you don't even care
if he slept with his own daughter -- you just don't want to be fucking
late.

From your studio in the East Village you huff up to the Union Square
Station and squirrel down the stairs into the hard dark underbelly of
Manhattan. Here you are confronted with a profound existential
dilemma: approaching the platform is the 6 Train, which stops every
thirty feet and takes approximately twenty minutes to get to 86th
Street (depending on how many tourists prop open the doors at Grand
Central). You look at your watch and it reads 11:35. With the 8-10
minute walk from Lexington and 86th to 5th Avenue, in the best case
scenario, you will arrive five minutes late. Werner would not be
happy.
