How friggin' cool is this for Richard?! He's always loved
scuba diving, and it seems like he's always "just back from
a WONDERFUL vacation in the Caribbean." You can tell just
how much he loves it down there.
He's worked hard doing every single KROQ club night, on
the air seven days a week, and doing all sorts of in-stores
for Tilly's, Jamba Juice, and the like, not to mention all the
various ads we've listened to for years on the air between
the great songs, and other things like the "Richard Blade's
Flahback Favorites" CDs (volumes 1-6). He's really earned
his time off and he and Krista (his fiancee) are sure to
enjoy their future plans.
On a personal note, I really wish the best for Richard and
Krista. Richard was the first person at the station that I
got to know. He's always been one of the nicest and most
enthusiastic people I've ever met. He is so genuinely nice,
he could give Mother Theresa a run for her money. If you've
ever talked to him, you know how true his smile is when he
meets you.
When I first learned of his leaving KROQ, I was initially in
shock... "This guy has been at KROQ forever!" Then after a
moment, it hit me how much he always wanted to follow
his "other" obsession. Which made me incredibly happy for
him that he's worked hard enough to be able to accomplish
not just one of, but all of his main goals in life.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear Richard once in a while in
the future on the air. He's simply got to have somewhere
to vacation to in order to get away from the major hustle
and bustle of wiping the fog out of his goggles!
Richard will be greatly missed on KROQ, but it's incredibly
pleasent to see that he's off to do things for himself after
almost 20 years of the highest level of loyalty, work ethic,
and dedication to KROQ.

Blade Runner to the Caribbean
(March 31, 2000) Richard Blade is leaving KROQ. He's getting married
soon, and he's moving to St. Martin's in the Caribbean to teach scuba
diving. He told the staff in an internal memo that "KROQ is the Best
radio station in America." Richard didn't use the word "retirement" in
his letter, although that's how it read. Richard started on BBC radio in
the 1970s and came to the United States in 1976, and his British accent
became his trademark and virtually the essence of his livelihood. In the
late 1970s he found radio work in Bakersfield and San Luis Obispo and
finally arrived at KNAC. Born Richard Sheppard, he picked his last name
from the popular movie, Blade Runner. Richard offered his services to
KROQ for free, which eventually led to his 18 years with the station. He
was half of the popular morning team of "Ramondo and the Blade" in 1983
and later did mornings with the Poorman for a period. In recent years he
has been hosting the "Flashback Lunch" segment. "Radio is everything
I've ever dreamed of. I was like every 12- or 13-year-old kid who's ever
stood in front of a mirror with a hairbrush and dreamed of being a rock
'n roller. I couldn't sing so a disc jockey was the closest I would
come," said Richard.
Do you think the reason the Flashback lunch was pulled for a while was
because they knew this was coming?

From what I've gathered, no.

Dah whatever...
Don't be so sure.

Nope. It's too hard to talk underwater while scuba diving. :-)

Hey, that actually could be kinda cool (the broadcasting from an
island part, not the underwater part) - KROQ could eventually develop
a global DJ network! Send Rodney to the Arctic somewhere...

Maybe that would improve the voice....

Like oiO said, he is so genuinely nice. He has a heart of gold. He loves
KROQ and everyone there, and the feeling is more than mutual. I remember
when I first started there, I felt so out of place and all, but then came my
first sunday (work week monday-sunday) with him and he made me feel really
comfortable, like I was finally part of the KROQ team. He has such a great
attitude that knowing him for the short time I have, it felt like I've known
him all my life, well, that and having grown up listening to him on KROQ.
My brother and sister, who have listened to KROQ far longer than I, were
devastated at the news of his leaving. They each have the whole 6-CD
collection of his FBFs.
Richard's time has come to move on. He was telling me yesterday that right
now is a great time to leave. He's "going to go out missed (and praised as
a KROQ Legend, (my add)), rather than overstay [his] welcome." God knows
he's made a huge name for himself in L.A. Radio, and has become one of the
most beloved members in KROQ history. He said he was going to miss working
with all of us, but that it's time for him to move on and follow his other
obsession. I have to hand it to Richard, how many people on this earth can
say they've done all they wanted in life and more so? He deserves
everything he has ever gotten and will get.
He's kept KROQ real in the sense that we have to stick to our roots, but not
be afraid of change. He loves a lot of the new KROQ music, I haven't heard
him badmouth one single new song. Perhaps he understands the passion and
energy that are put into them by the bands who perform them. (Blink 182
excluded, not by Richard, by me.) He also loves all the old KROQ stuff, as
any of us know. He knows what he's talking about.
What makes me angry though is that to a lot of KROQ listeners, the kids in
particular, they won't even notice he's gone. To them, it's like, "big
deal?" But to those of us who know the goings-on at KROQ, he will be sorely
missed. I know that everyone at KROQ, when they found out through his
internal memo he was leaving, was in near total shock. I know I was. oiO
was the one who told me since I hadn't worked the day he announced it. I
was in disbelief at the whole situation. When I read the 3 page letter he
wrote to the staff I literally teared up.
He's spent 18 years of his life with KROQ and there aren't enough words in
the english language to say how much we appreciate him being a part of all
our lives, even those of us who've only worked with him for a short time.
He has touched all of our hearts with his love of life and passion for his
work. The halls of KROQ will seem a little darker without his warm smile.
It's been a great run, he's finally following his other dream, to teach
diving off the coast of the islands of the Bahamas. I'm sure I speak for
all KROQ employees past and present when I say thank you, Richard, for your
dedication, your perseverance, for your love of your job and friends. You
take with you a part of each and every one of us. We wish you all the love
and happiness we can possibly offer you. Good luck on your travels and have
a safe journey. You've earned it. Thanks.
:As sad as it is, Richard is leaving us. I spoke with him yesterday about it
:and he seemed genuinely thrilled that he was finally going to work on his
:other love, the sea. HE deserves this, if anyone does.
I can still remember working the occasional KROQ night with him at the old SportsRock in Arcadia.
Hopefully, he'll find bluer pastures in the Carib.
Good Luck,
Big John

I've made it known that the Flashback Lunch is my least favorite show on KROQ,
and most of that has to do with Richard...

To be honest, Richard is a nice guy and all, but I really don't
care for him all that much. His accent grates me. He lost it
quite awhile ago, and really needs to just assimilate. Anyway,
I like Flashback Lunch, because the music is great and it
takes me back to my early years of childhood (dancing around
in my diapers to Billy Idol or Devo while my mom has a laugh
at the situation).
Jennifer
Early childhood? I did that last week.

Well thats all...I wish Richard the best of luck & the "real" fans of
KROQ to keep pushing this radio station to play innovative music and not
sell-out to corporate record Co.

Especially the ending! That's what i've been trying to say for so long now...
KROQ posers pay attention to the ending resolution of his message!
Urge KROQ to play good music, not suck up to corp music!
Would you shut the fuck up already, stop listening to the station,
and stop bitching about it here. Do it somewhere else. Damn
you are so fuckin' annoying. Nobody gives a shit what you have
to say, really and truly. I've very rarely seen you post anything that
has anything POSITIVE to say about KROQ or KROQ fans...
so go choke on a gerbil or something.
Jennifer
Geeze, don't get all bent outta shape over it. He's just being rather
jerkish because he doesn't believe that what some people (actually a
great many) are allowed to enjoy certain types of music. Who cares if
the music happens to be drivel? Let people do what they want. If
someone listens to Britney Spears, I don't mind because they enjoy it.
On top of that, he pays no attention to the other stuff that is played
on KROQ that is not always huge, major-label, over-played drivel
(Zeke, Rodney...). The fact is that KROQ *is* out to make money and
will do what they must to achieve this goal. All I know is that some
of the music they play cannot be heard on the Top 40 crap stations and
such. So if you don't like the radio, don't turn it on. Damnit. But
just ignor Bricko. He/she is obsessed.

I'm just sick of his bullshit. It's gone on way too damned long.

As are all companies. So there's nothing bad about that. End of story.

Hi Jennifer -
But what _is_ bad is that years ago KROQ used to play great music, not
Metallica every 60 minutes.
I will really miss the flashback lunch, although perhaps Tammy can or
someone else can keep it going, I don't know.
TWR, KROQ listener since 1980
Some people like Metallica. Radio stations evolve to suit
their listeners and sponsors desires...and obviously their
ratings have gone up since adding Metallica to the playlist,
because they've kept them on, and increased the frequency.
Jennifer
After 18 years, Richard has decided to end his career in radio and move on
to his other passion, the sea. He's moving to the Carribean to teach SCUBA
diving. His farewell party is tomorrow (friday, 4-28) at the Hollywood
Palace from 9AM-1PM. Sorry you can't come. It's gonna be hot.
Anyway, I find that I turn to KCRW more often now for some real alternative
music (and news sometimes).
Did anyone else hear Poorman on Power 106 a while back? Is he still on
there? What is up with that? The days of the Poorman (remember Poorwear?!)
and Richard on the morning show and Rodney and Poorman on the original
Loveline are gone behind us now. I'm so glad Jed the Fish is still at KROQ.
But how much longer??
