It's a song I'd never heard before called "I Believe You":

It's sounds like they're doing a parody of the Liverpool sound.

Dave wrote that, it's on the American version of Unfinished Business,
but the vocal sounds more like Ray than Dave. Any experts here?

I don't know but it's such an obvious Beatles rip off!

IMHO Ray has always been the superior songwriter

Ray is much more prolific songwriter than Dave, but the world would be a
lesser place without songs like Imaginations Real, Take One More Chance,
Living on a Thin Line, Mindless Child of Motherhood, Who's Foolin' Who,
Bug, Susannah's Still Alive, Death of a Clown, Trust Your Heart, Doing
the Best For You, Close to the Wire, Perfect Strangers, Charity, When
You Were a Child, and Love Gets You.

I'd like to know if Pete ever attempted songwriting. Don't know of any
lead vocals by Pete, but he seemed to be alright on harmonies. Mick, on
the other hand....haven't heard his version of DFOF, but I'm told he
talks it more than sings it.

It's a very early recording, predating "You Really Got Me." I think
it's Ray singing, but I'm not really sure.

Ray and Dave can sound very similar, despite Dave having the higher
voice. Must be in the genes.

That's especially true on some of those early recordings. And then
there's the wonderful sound of them singing together. I think the
sound of Ray and Dave singing together is the single most consistent
element of the Kinks' "sound" over the many years. They might not have
always sung harmonies that a music teacher would love, but to my ears
that combination always sounded fantastic.

It should also be not that Bob Graham is listed as the drummer.
Recorded in mid 1963 "I Believe You" is likely one of the Kinks
earliest tracks. To my knowledge it remained unreleased until the
"Unfinished Business" album.

Agreed, Joanne. Ray and Dave singing together was always magic. The fact
that their harmonies were sometimes less than perfect seems perfectly
symbolic, mirroring their real life disharmony.

It seems the actual title is "I Believed You" and it was a Ravens
demo from . I'm thinking it's Ray singing, it sounds more like Ray.
Even
though it's a Beatles knockoff, it's a well executed Beatles knockoff.

I just stumbled across a Kinks cover of Chuck Berry's "Too Much
Monkey Business" where Dave's singing and playing are very
impressive. If Mick Avory is playing drums here, he deserves
credit too:

I cut myself off! It's from 1963:

There's a ton of songs available at YouTube:

I'm in a mode now where they play one after the other.

Before youtube? We traded tapes recorded from tv shows.

And nowadays we sometimes download those same shows from bit torrent
sites.

Lennon was one of a kind !

"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed.
Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-
evident."

Why so much hostility directed towards a single man?

Are all the people who still call John Lennon "a commie" still trying
to justify his assassination?
