I think my days of raving Kinkiness are coming to an end. I can't stand
Ray's Khoral Kinks and duets cd's, and Dave's new Auschere Project
doesn't interest me, either. I watched his Mystical Journey dvd once,
and haven't felt compelled to go back to it. There was a time when I had
to have everything these guys did, and I loved most of it. No more.

You are living in the past, so get a life.
Noones gonna miss your sour comments.

I like what Ray are doing because Kinks belong to the past life.
Dave is doing what makes him feel good, not my cup of tea but it sounds
okay.
A bit like Andreas Vollenweider.

But all Ray is doing is re-recording old Kinks songs. If I wanna hear
those songs, I can always put on the old records. If he comes out with
some new songs, I might be interested. Loved Other People's Lives, loved
Dave's Bug, and Fractured Mindz had some good songs, but I guess my
interests lie elsewhere now.

Well, I can't blame you. I, personally, am pretty much over Ray. I
think both of his solo studio records were good, but his recent
"reinterpretations" of Kinks music didn't appeal to me very much. He
has a right to record what he wants, of course, but the little voice
in my head questions whether he was really inspired by artistic
vision, or was he just milking the cash cow, with the choral and duets
CDs?

I've always been a Dave girl, anyway, (as everyone knows), and will
continue to follow what he is up to. I think the difference between
Dave's new projects and Ray's new projects is that Dave is really
doing NEW stuff, while Ray is rehashing the old. I don't think Dave
expects his new age stuff to be especially popular; but it's where his
muse is at, these days.

I won't be surprised to see another 'Fractured Mindz' style release
from Dave in the future. Despite his illness and lack of touring,
Dave's creative juices seem to still be flowing.

Joanne, thank you for your intelligent and well written response. I'm
still interested in what Dave does, still love his music. I admit,
though, that I don't go all the way on his new agey stuff - musically or
spiritually. I watched Mystical Journey a couple times, and I'm thankful
Dave shared this part of his life with us, but I guess my beliefs might
be described as liberal Christian - faith in God without the emphasis on
hellfire and damnation. Way too much of that in today's postmodern
society. So I share Dave's interest in looking below the surface, and
how we can affect the world for the better, but our ways of getting
there are much different. The great thing about his music is, it doesn't
have to be specific. When I heard the Chosen People album, it had a
great impact on me as a Christian. In fact, I can think of very few
albums by Christians that express a spiritual worldview so beautifully.
I was, you might say, "evangelical" about that album, wanted all my
friends to hear it. Bought 4 or 5 copies for friends as gifts, played it
for countless others. Or to paraphrase Brian Wilson, "everybody listen
to Dave's Chosen People, then we'll have world peace". :)

Ron, I share your love for the 'Chosen People' album. It is a musical
masterpiece, Dave's best solo album in my opinion, and a lyrical
expression of his spirituality.

He had spirituality given to him -- he didn't go and look for it. As
"weird" as it seems to many fans that he heard alien voices who told
him to go out and do good things for people, to Dave that incident
really happened, and it has motivated everything in his life since
then.

Even before this experience, Dave's songs had an element of longing,
of seeking to build connections with others, of expressing emotions
and feelings of love for others and for the world.

Dave obviously was interested in things like yoga and meditation since
the early 70's, but his "contact" in 1982 was, as he says in MJ, "an
epiphany". There were hints of what was to come in AFL1-3603 and
Glamour, but it was heightened (sp?) on Chosen People - I believe that's
why it had such an effect on me. And I was sorely disappointed when
friends didn't pick up on it. I really became disillusioned after years
of trying to share that kind of love or message with the people around
me. It just seems like most of us are content to go through life without
scraping below the surface. Or maybe we're afraid to dig a little deeper
- afraid of what we might find. BTW, Joanne, I finally have a few songs
up on Myspace - the link is on my website. I'd be very interested in
your reaction to them.
