Rumour has it that Dan was based on the esteemed Frank Reda, a
long-time, loyal Kinks fan and in recent years a loyal Dave Davies
fan. Members of the Dave Davies band seem to believe this, so they
must have been told this by Dave.
I am sure there are other theories or rumours about this. Anyone?

Back in the early 20th century, when the term "fan" wasn't in
circulation yet, the term used for baseball followers was "cranks." It's
too bad that term didn't last, because then the line could've been "Frank
is a crank..."

Well, my theory has always been that it's about me, in part. I guess a
few hundred other people might have had the same idea too, though.

I heard this dude tell people he was Dan. So my suspciion is he told
the band he was. I've also heard that Frank Lima thinks its about him.

I've always thought the song was a little more generalized than that...
i.e., it's not about a specific person. I'm sure a lot of people like to
think that they're "Dan."
But I could be wrong.

He was an english comic character from "Eagle" in the 1950's. Very
likely to have been read by the brothers as they grew up.

(me)Frank Lima in mind since we are both friends and long time Kinks fans.
The story in Ray's short story book written recently a few years ago
though was based more on Frank Reda although I heard there another story
in there that(me) Frank Lima was the inspiration for ? ( Ray actually told
me this ) I'm thinking it might be " Next door Neighbor " which was as was
the entire show at the Jane St. theatre when Ray played there a few years
ago all were dedicated to (me)Frank Lima.
