In the beginning there were 444 songs.
Today only 51 remain.

When it's over only one will survive :
THE SONG OF THE CENTURY !!!!!
________________________

Here's how the final round works:

Each week randomly selected songs will be posted in pairs.
Please chose one song from each pair.

The song receiving the most votes in each pair will return to the pool
of surviving songs and will be immediately eligible for future
kompetition.

I don't know if I like this new method... but I'll give it my best shot...

>ALL DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT

Cheesy? Yes. But I'm still a rockin' young pup who needs a song like this to
kick out the jams and dose out the gear, er, I mean fun.

>DEATH OF A CLOWN

It's a good song, I can't not like it. Not too much to say though.

>SEE MY FRIENDS

I really like "Dead End Street", but this song has a melancholy tone that is
very eery. Very well done.

>MISFITS

I was just listening to it as I opened this letter, I guess it's fate then.

cheers and gear!

Wow--this is a fun way to decide....Here goes:

> The match ups:
> (Week 1)
>
> SWEET LADY GENEVIEVE
> vs.

> ALL DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT

Sweet Lady Genevieve. Not as important a song, perhaps, but it just has
one of those melodies I can't get out of my head. Plus, as good as
ADAAOTN is, it is still very derivative of YRGM.

> BETTER THINGS
> vs
> DEATH OF A CLOWN

Better Things. I can't believe I've voted for 2 "modern" songs over 2
"classic" songs, but I must say I prefer Better Things. It's a very close
call, however.

> SEE MY FRIENDS
> vs.
> DEAD END STREET

Dead End Street. No doubt about this one. You could substitute virtually
any Kinks song for See My Friends (a truly great song, BTW), and I'd have
the same answer.

> MISFITS
> vs.
> DO IT AGAIN

Close call, but I'll take Do it Again just because I liked the video when
it came out. Any excuse for Ray to reprise his Spiv character in a video
is a good thing. Both are excellent "arena period" Kinks tracks.

Let's face it," All Day and All of the Night" is a great tune, but a bit
of a rip off from the earlier hit. So, I have to go with the melody that
forever is entrenched in my mind...

Sweet Lady Genevieve

Death of a Clown....great beer drinking song!

Dead End Street...this is almost 2 or 3 songs in one. How can I resist?

ALL DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT

Not the best but better

DEATH OF A CLOWN

Much tougher. Better Things is a wonderful song, but Death of a Clown is
brilliantly brittle.

DEAD END STREET

Very catchy.

MISFITS
The toughest. Do It Again is an anthem, and I could use a new and a new
nose. But Misfits is a milestone, and beautiful to boot.

So essentially, we're picking four instead of three, but pitting them
against each other instead? Hmmmm....with the choices here, I'd almost
immediately have eliminated the last two listed in favor of something
from the first three pairings--no fair.

Ah, a new format for the finals. Well, this makes it interesting -- and
maybe it will bring out some different thoughts now that we've all
commented on these songs twice already.

SWEET LADY GENEVIEVE vs.
ALL DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT

Although I like it a lot, I'm not as big a fan of Genevieve as many of
you seem to be, so it's not too hard for me to choose All Day and All of
the Night. The opening salvo of those power chords constitutes the best
intro of any Kinks song, and the rest of it lives up to that beginning.

BETTER THINGS vs
DEATH OF A CLOWN

Better Things wins in overtime, mainly because of the excitement when
the first line of the chorus kicks in ("It's really good to see you...").
Also, I love the rising guitar bit that Dave plays between the verses;
it's reminiscent of the part Mick Taylor plays on Time Waits for No One.
Death of a Clown is better as a sing-along, though.

SEE MY FRIENDS vs.
DEAD END STREET

Toughest call of this bunch for me, because they both have appeal in
themselves, and also as key moments in Kinks history. I have to go with
Dead End Street, for its jaunty-but-bleak approach and its social
comment.

MISFITS vs.
DO IT AGAIN

Two really well produced songs, with great overall sounds. I really
like Do It Again, one of the best commercial Kinks songs (and why it
wasn't a top 20 hit I don't know), but Misfits has more substance and
pathos. A clear win for Misfits.

Ods:

DO IT AGAIN (the best concert opener the Kinks ever had)
SWEET LADY GENEVIEVE (tough choice...but it's hard to pass up
this melancholic gem)
DEAD END STREET (great class distinction bite; I've gotten a bit tired of
See My Friend's droning, but Dead End sounds perpetually fresh)
DEATH OF A CLOWN (by default; I just always felt that Better Things was a
forced attempt by Ray to silence the critics that his songs were too
negative and depressing)

I've really enjoyed reading all of your thoughts during the life of this contest
especially during the first round when they sparked rethinking or remembering of so many
great tunes... and a few, uh, lesser ones... I always thought I'd jump in sometime but
since I don't get to the board much I never did. So I thought, well, I'll definitely

1. All Day and All of the Night - Sweet Lady Genevieve is a great song but
it doesn't have the historical significance of ADAAOTH.
2. Death of a Clown - I know many think of Better Things as a Kink's anthem,
but to me it does not stand out and Death of a Clown was the
coming of age for Dave as a
songwriter.
3. Dead End Street - A tough match up. I love See My Friends with its
haunting sound, but Dead End Street combines the pathos of the
material with Ray's unbelievable
lyrics. That combination is what does it for me.
4. Misfits - I like the cleaner sound of Misfits, but I don't expect it to
last too many rounds.

Olga, I feel your pain! This one really does hurt, and I'm tempted to vote for
"See My Friends" just to make a statement, since it isn't going to win anyway.
But as much as I love "See My Friends" (hey, I'm a big Neil Young fan; droning
and whining don't bother me at all), which was an extraordinarily advanced song
for its time, "Dead End Street" has always been my short list of songs I might
vote for in the final.

SWEET LADY GENEVIEVE- all talked out (heh) but this is one Kinks song I just
don't get weary listening to. ALL DAY is my 4th or 5th favorite early Kinks
rocker.

DEAD END STREET- this song seems to loom a bit larger as it ages. I remember
not being that knocked out by it at first but now it's enough to give the boot

>SEE MY FRIENDS- (sigh) which I like a lot but not as much
> "the torture never stops..." -Frank Zappa
DO IT AGAIN- it's the Kinks playing as an ensemble that I'm impressed with.
At first I was skeptical; didn't the Beach Boys do a Do it Again kinda song?
But I went
past Ray's singing to what Rodford, Henrit and Dave were going on about and I
liked it. Barely beats out Misfits which I've been a bit tired of- which is my
fault I played it
too much ;) >>>Chuck

I like this new format! Odsie, change is good. The only problem is I
absolutely love all eight of these songs.

My votes:

ALL DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT - Finally I get to vote for some really big hits.
I generally avoided them in the earlier rounds because I wanted to get my votes
in for favorite, lesser known songs while I had the chance. Genevieve's a
great song, especially as sung by Peter Moore, but All Day just punches me in
the gut every time, even after all these years.

DEATH OF A CLOWN - I'll tell you all a secret. I actually like both Funny Face
and Love Me Till the Sun Shines better than DOAC. But that still means this is
one of my top 25 songs. (As for Better Things, it really works as a pick me up
when suffering from the blues.)

SEE MY FRIENDS - I'm voting for Dave's bewitching live version with those
jungle drums. The original song is good (and historically important because of
the first use of an "Indian sound" in a pop record), but ... the way Dave
reworked this is unbelievable. (Dead End Street - a work of absolute genius, a
song about gut-wrenching poverty that works as a sing-along ditty.)

DO IT AGAIN - Brilliant songwriting and musicianship. The "new car, new house,
new job, new nose" line is one of my absolute faves. And the guitar - yum.
(Misfits - both touching and meaningful.)

SWEET LADY GENEVIEVE- I'll vote for the beauty of this melody and cascading of
guitars in this number, although I do have a soft spot for the rough brutality
of ADAAOTN.

DEATH OF A CLOWN- Not my favorite Dave song, but a Kinks masterpiece
nonetheless. Hey, and is it just me, or does this track somehow sound like a
warped record at some parts (even when listening on CD) I don't know how to
explain it, but when the guitar does the chord progression right before "Let's
all drink..." the music sounds somewhat warped.... (Better Things is an
uplifting hopefull song, but a bit cheesy at the same time)

SEE MY FRIENDS- said Pull MyCockOff to Dave Davies: "Damn you guys, I should
have written that song!" (Paul McCartney in case you didn't know... the
nickname was one Mick Avory made up) While I do find this song to be
overrated, it's very innovative and I love the melody of the middle eight.
(Dead End Street is a great song, but my love of it was lessened by the To The
Bone US version. For some reason, on this live version Ray does not sing the
chorus line to the normal rythym... instead he just speaks it really fast and
it sucks. Why???)

DO IT AGAIN- One of my all time favorite Kinks song. Love Dave's high harmony
on the second verse "Change the world and do it AGAIN." And the swirling
spiral of acoustic guitars that opens the songs is mezmerizing. I might add
that the chord riff of the verse, while used in many other songs (The Clash's
"Clampdown" and Green Day's "Walking Contradiction") is put best to use in this
song. Pure great songwriting. (Misfits is a sentimental Kinks song where for
once I believe that Ray really means it.... amost touching.)

Sweet Lady Genevieve

It's a genuine shame that this gem will probably not advance. Songs like
ADAAOTN may have made our ears prick up, but it's the more subtle songs
which made us kultists. SLG is clearly superior in nearly every aspect.
Probably the only real love song Ray has written, you can feel the passion
of the guy who screwed up with a good thing and realizes it!! There's
plenty of songs about "girls" you want to spend all day&night with, but how
often are the songs about "girls" you should have perhaps thought spending a
lifetime with. It's clear that the lyrics are superior, and it's one of
Ray's best melodies. Odsie said it best a couple of weeks back when he said
he wouldn't be disappointed if this song won. I've also always felt All Day
... was the weakest of the power chord KinKs songs, Ray's opinion be damned.
I didn't realize how passionate I was about this song until tonight BTW.

>
> BETTER THINGS
> vs
> DEATH OF A CLOWN

A tough one, but ultimately I'll go with "Death of a Clown",
mainly because I hate clowns. But seriously, I've never had nearly as strong
a reverence for "Better Things" as other kultists. I've always thought this
was a bit too pandering, especially given the time it was written. Besides,
I REALLY hate clowns.

> SEE MY FRIENDS
> vs.
> DEAD END STREET

Probably the toughest choice of this round, really a coin toss. And the
winner is......, Oh wait, how about two out of three. And so my choice is,
as if anyone cares. No, these two songs deserve more than a quick decision.

See My Friends:

Assets:

That "eastern" feel.

The "Patented" KinKs ambiguity.

Deficits:

That "eastern" feel.

The "Patented KinK' s ambiguity.

Dead End Streets

Assets:

The usual pathos

Deficits:

The usual Pathos

so I'll go with:

Like anyone cares,

See My Friends
_________

> MISFITS
> vs.
> DO IT AGAIN
>

Misfits.

Not that I would have advanced it this far (which I probably did) but "Do it
Again?" I'm sorry, but being the second best song on the KinKs worst album
doesn't do much for me (Although I am very fond of the best song on the
KinKs worst album.)

Thanks, I couldn't have said it better.

<Rant Mode On>

Let's Fast Foward to the end of this contest:

The Finals:

You Really Got Me

vs

Lola

YRGM wins because people always remember when they heard that first
power cord.

WHAT?!?

That seems to be the way this contest is going. SLG is a FAR better
song than ADAAOLN (as well as it's two clones, YRGM and Destroyer, same
songs, 3 different ets of lyrics). However,it seems that people just
remeber how those power cords rocked, end of story. I Wanna Hold Your
Hand was a huge hit for the Beatles, giving them their first break at
stardom, but I can think of 20 different songs that are superior to
it.

If Power Cords are all it takes to create the best song ever, than
let's give the award to Back in Black.

Men are fairly two dimensional when it comes to romance.
They're either Troubadours or Stevedores, and about the only time they
ever bother being Troubadours is when they're forced to apologize for
being Stevedores !
ADAAOTN is a raunchy sweating hard-working Stevedore of a song.
SWEET LADY GENEVIEVE isn't.

I vote for the SWEET LADY.

Arrrgghh...
a tough one.
I love SEE MY FRIENDS. The original is wonderful and Dave's new
version may be even better....but I'll go with DEAD END STREET.
One of the transcendent moments I've experienced at a Kinks concert
was when Ray had the whole audience singing this song and damn if that
audience didn't sing it perfectly not missing a single "yeah" or "can
you feel it"

Two great songs, but I can't get too excited about seeing either of
them advance any further, so I'll go with MISFITS.

The Kinks' worst album? Sorry, but I feel compelled to speak up on behalf
of Word of Mouth. For my part, I consider it one of the better Kinks albums
-- in the top eight or ten. I've always thought so, too; this isn't one that
grew on me gradually or anything. I like the bright, inventive sound of the
album, and the lyrics (except for maybe Guilty) are less "bombastic" than
those on the big hits of the Arista years.

more impassioned comment than the others; these songs are just so far apart.

I couldn't understand it back in 1985, and I still can't. Then again, I

Glad to see you say that, Bob. I was shocked that anyone would consider WoM

I have also been surprised at how many people seem to hate Do It Again in

Word of Mouth is one of my favorites. What about "Summer's Gone?" How can
you not like that?
"Dad looked at us and he looked at his wife
He must've wondered where we all came from
Mom said 'Dad, you know it won't last for long
Before you know it, Summer's Gone'"

And Good Day, the song about life and Diana Dors (not Lady Diana)
"She always smiled even when she felt low
I used to fancy her a long time ago."

Besides, I saw the concert (in Memphis) and I got the tee shirt.

I'm American, and I feel the same way. If Muswell isn't their best, it's very
close, IMHO. And I think I still listen to it as much or more than any other
Kinks album. It was also a great Walkman companion when I visited London a few
years ago.

Well, I never expected to get such a response from a fairly simple post.
First, we are talking about the KinKs, and even their worst is better than
most groups best. After such a great response, I re-listened to WOM and
guess what, it still doesn't do anything for me. Other than "Living on a
Thin Line," nothing really speaks to me. As to Percy, well I prefer "Gods
Children" and "The Way Love Used to Be." to anything on WOM, including Thin
Line and that alone is enough to rank it higher. And fess up, isn't "Whip
Lady" just about everybody's guilty pleasure

;-s

And to those who say WOM is one of their favorite albums, go through
your albums again (notice I didn't say CD's). I don't see it even close to a
top ten. Just to add a little more controversy, one of the most maligned
CD's (notice the change) is actually one of my favorite later day KinKs
albums. None other than UK Jive. I kid you not. I'm wondering if I'm alone
in my appreciation of this gem. I remember once playing this in my car pool
and having someone say, "Gee, this is pretty good. How come they don't play
this on the radio?"

I like State of Confusion, but I really can't say I like it as well as
either Give the People What They Want or State of Confusion which came
before, but all three of those albums probably got higher subjective
ratings from me because the three albums preceding them were, for me,
the extended low point for the group (although I realize that many
many fans were hooked in by just those albums) But taste varies, as
they say, and I have to wonder does anyone else aside from me prefer
Sold Me Out to Do It Again?

However, on to UK Jive. I also like the album a lot (except that
Looney Balloon gets up my nose for some reason) A few months back I
was visiting a friend who is not a Kinks fan but had found Lost and
Found cheap someplace and picke dit up for the heck of it and was
palying it in his car. He was raving about some of the UK Jive Tracks,
esp UK Jive and How Do I Get Close. Couldn't figure out how the latter
hadn't been a bit radio hit. And how can you not like UK Jive?

I listened to the Velvel reissue after seeing the post, and yes it it's an
excellent recording!
Btw, I tried to got to velvel's website and it appears to be no more--the
rumors were true?

haha!

I wish I'd kept mine now... Got it at Richfield, OH--which was wrongly
labeled on the shirt as something like Richmond(?).... I remember the
concert well. My first Kinks concert. I'd gotten two tickets, but at
different times so me and my friend were like 10 rows apart. We switched a
ticket with some very large man. It was a great concert.... Donnie Iris
opened--I think he had one minor hit; something like "pump it up". He did a
pumping iron thing with the mic stand... I remember Ray strummed the chords
to Lola and the entire arena rose to their feet as one. It was a religious
experience...

Yes. But I think the live recording is more upbeat. On the studio version
the line sounds more like desperation... I like the song very much
though... Good to listen to alongside oingo boingo's "Just another day"
and/or "no one lives forever." (and Robyn Hitchcock's "vegetation and
dimes")

Heeyyy! Wait a minute! Many people seem to HATE Do It Again? To speak for my
self, all _I_ said was that I could very well understand that DIA didn't reach
the Top20, as a response to the person saying he couldn't figure out why it
didn't. I don't hate the song (and I haven't seen anyone else saying that
either). I think DIA is a good (maybe very good) song, but i don't think it had
hit potential. It's not another Come Dancing, which was the Kinks' biggest hit
for a decade. Of course DIA has great lyrics, but I'm afraid the lyrics doesn't
make a song a hit. If so, the Kinks would have been constantly in the top 10!

BTW, when WOM came out it was a dissappointment to me after SOC. I still find
SOC a better album, but when listening to the reissue I actually like WOM a lot
better than I used to. SOC has more great songs, but Missing Persons, Good Day,
Summer's Gone, Living on a Thin Line and Do It Again (!) are not far behind.

OK, Jorn, backtrack if you like, but I have definitely seen quite a few
*very* negative comments made about Do It Again in kontest votes.

Death of a Clown

Ah, a tricky one. Finally go with Dead End Street. Two reasons. First
because the mix of upbeat treatment and downbeat subject is excellent.
Second, the "what are we living for" phrase appears in sundry other
songs, and ALWAYS makes me want to jump cut to "2-roomed apartment ..."

Hmmm. I'll abstain on that one. No strong feelings either way.

I wasn't going to post the final 51, because I wanted to insure
spontaneity and give that spur-of-the-moment whimsical magic a chance
to work. I didn't want anyone to lock onto a winner before the first
face-to-face challenge had been issued....but, hey, everyone pretty
much knows what songs are left , so why not ?

But I'm not gonna make it too easy for you, either....besides, maybe
someone will want to follow through on Kono's analysis of the numbers.

Well, as I have said elsewhere, I am at heart a fence sitter when it
comes to picking fave albums and songs of the Kinks, but I have to
declare that Muswell Hillbillies is my no 1.

So much depends on where you consider your musical roots to be as to
what actually grabs you when you hear it, but I was blasted away when I
first heard this album (too long ago to contemplate) and it still
delights me today. I can't even think what I would consider to be their
"worst" album - to me such a thing does not exist!!!!

But aren't we lucky that the Kinks have done such diverse work in their
career that we can argue about the pro and cons of the albums?

The only time I'll get really riled is if someone has a "go" at the
boys, and calls them "has beens"! Then you will certainly see me roll
up my sleeves, pick up my handbag and advance into battle!

Now there's a good example of how wildly opinions differ because
Sleepwalker has always been one of my least favorites. (although the
two others, I agree are among the best) For some reason it has always
struck me as rather depressing. Perhaps it was something to do with my
own state of mind when I first heard it, but I can't recall any reason
why that should be.

I have tried to get into it from time to time. Most recently a couple
years ago, it being the day before Halloween and driving down to where
my family lives, near Wilkes-Barre, where I had a ticket to Ray's
show, and under the circumstances I really warmed up to Full Moon.
But, of course, about 20 people bought tickets to see the Wilkes-Barre
show so it was cancelled.

So, I'm afraid the album remains a downer for me!

Now Olga, not saying that "the boys" are has beens, but where have they been the
last few years? We are all sitting around the table waiting for another serving
but there is no waiter or waitress in sight and the kitchen seems to be
closed. We seem to have been served a few appetizers, solo tours, but no main
course, the kinks. Your quote conjures up a vision of an elderly woman
attacking a purse snatcher, and we know that you aren't elderly? Just an elder
spokes person. Here Come The People In Grey!

Well I know as much as you! Ray and Dave felt it necessary to do their
own things.

Tell me about it, I'm suffering as well! It's nearly 5 years since I
saw them live at Shepherd's Bush Empire - thank heavens it was one of
the best shows ever. I keep saying, I am sure they will get together,
but as to when.....hmmmm.

Hahahhhaaa :-) My youngest thinks I boogied round with Queen
Victoria! No, dear - I boogie "to" Victoria! I was thinking of the
Monty Python crew dressed in drag when I mentioned the handbag
swinging.....

Here Come The People In Grey!

Let's hide in the surrey with the fringe on top!

This is a good question. It's been six years since Phobia, which must
qualify as the longest stretch ever without new Kinks. Is this going to be a
Dire Straits-type thing, where they just go their separate ways in a defacto
breakup? We want more!
Meanwhile, this is great hanging out electronically with you all. After
hearing all the praise for Arthur, I got it out and it's as good as you say.
I originally voted for Victoria and Shangri-La anyway, but the rest is
excellent, too.
I WANT MY NEW KINKS.

Jack

I forgot all about Monty Python, although I almost rented in search of the Holy
Grail and The Life Of Brian the other day, those guys knock my socks off. I'm
rocking to Set Me Free as I am writing this.Remember these immortal words,
Spam, spam and eggs, spam and toast, spam and spam. Eric

I spent many happy hours of my youth watching Monty Pythons being
