Replaced my old scratchy copy of Preservation Act 1 today with a NM
copy, I think perhaps I've been a bit harsh towards this album in the
past. There's some nice tunes there.

I like Act 1 better than Act 2, although there's very little plot in Act
1. Sweet Lady Genevieve is a really touching song, especially when you
know the inspiration behind it.

I don't know this....what is the inspiration?

Listening on vinyl, I take it?

The three-record version of Preservation reminds me that we used to
call it "the Preservation trilogy." It's been a long time since I've
heard anyone use that reference, which is totally lost in the age of
CDs.

I still like vinyl the best. "Sweet Lady Genevieve" was written by Ray
after the split with his first wife Rasa. It was mentioned in "The
Kinks: the Official Biography" by John Savage. It was also around the
time Ray announced his retirement from the stage during a show at White
City.

Maybe it's Dave singing the soprano parts - or Mick! The album is no
help, it just credits the songs to the characters singing them, i.e. The
Tramp, Flash, Mr. Black, floosies, etc. Some people found the story
disappointing because there was no obvious good guy vs. bad guy, just a
bad guy vs. a worse guy, but isn't life like that? I mean, here in the
US, we had Reagan and Bush who weren't really good guys, they just
looked like it, then we had Clinton who sometimes came off as Slick
Willy, but he was much better for the country than Bush 2, now we've got
Obama, who was supposed to be the savior, but he just appears to me to
be the lesser of two evils. Things are rarely as clear cut as we would
like them to be.
