For years I've tried to imagine a show where Dave focused mostly on his
solo stuff, with a few of his Kinks songs as well. I imagine the stage
pitch black, the musicians amble out on stage in the darkness, the room
silent, the guys pick up their instruments, and begin "Where Do You Come
From" from Dave's first solo album. What a blast that would be! "Doing
the Best For You" from the same album would be a good second song, with
its contrasts of quiet and loud sections. Then maybe a good medium
rocker like "Who's Foolin' Who" from "Bug", and then a couple softer
songs like "Love Gets You" and "Look Through Any Doorway". Then a good
chance for the musicians to stretch out on "Glamour" or "Come to the
River", something a bit bluesy. Then a short acoustic set, with a
semi-unplugged "Mean Disposition", "Strangers", and "Flowers in the
Rain". Then back to all out rock and roll with 'Nothin' More to Lose",
"Chosen People", "Bug", and "Free Me". encore? Bring out a small string
section (not a symphony) to back Dave and the band on "Take One More
Chance" and "Cold Winter". Second encore? Some trashy rock and roll with
"Bernadette" and "Good Golly Miss Molly".

Wow. That's all I can say. I would like to be in the audience for
that!

Before Dave started his solo tours, the Kinks digest discussed what
songs he would play or we'd like to hear him play. People generally
speculated on him playing songs he'd written himself. No one really
expected him to play a lot of songs Ray had written. But then when
Dave started performing we all realized he was better at picking a set
list than we were. (LOL) And the excellence of his performances of
those Ray-written songs proved that he had every right to perform
them.

The Kinks at their best were a collaboration between Ray and Dave, and
without Dave's musical input (in addition to Ray's songwriting genius)
the songs would not have been as great as they were.

Obviously, YRGM is the classic example. It was a pleasant slow blues
when Ray wrote it. It was only when Dave got his hands on it that it
turned into the furious punch in the gut that changed rock 'n' roll
forever.

That having been said, I think Dave is also a songwriting genius
(clearly a less prolific one than his brother) and I do agree with
Ron that there were times he didn't play enough of his own songs.

At this point in time, ANY Dave solo show would be a dream Dave solo
show.

Hi Joanne, yeah, I hope Dave is healthy enough someday to do some shows.
I'd like to hear how the Fractured Mindz stuff sounds live. It probably
would've been good for him to do some solo shows in the 80's when he did
his three solo albums, but there probably just wasn't time, what with
recording solo, recording with the Kinks, and touring with the Kinks. I
know the Kinks included a few of his solo tunes in their 80's shows, but
I've never found a recording of them.
