For over 10 years I"ve been looking for the releases that have John's
recording of satirical songs. There are two songs in particular I'm looking
for: one is about these girls that stumble on a scot and peek under his
kilt (the song ends with the line "lad, I don't know where ya been, but I
see ya won first prize!"), and the other was a political satire about Gary
Hart (I believe).

If someone could tell me where to find these I would be GREATLY
appreciative!

Thanks!

Hey, I know this one! The song is called "The Scotsman," & it was written
by Mike Cross. It appears on Mike Cross's 1979 album "Child Prodigy,"
available at the time from Ghe Records, P.O. Box 13222, Gainesville, FL
32604. Bryan Bower (who wrote the "Garden Song") recorded an excellent
version of "The Scotsman" on his "Home, Home on the Road,"(1980, Flying
Fish Records, 1304 West Schubert, Chicago,IL). I've been a Denver fan
since the Mitchell Trio from the late '60's, but this isn't on any of the
JD albums I've got, nor do I ever recall hearing him perform it in
concert. (of course, there are gaps in my collection, particularly when
stuff wasn't available on vinyl anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if he
had, though, it's a fun song especially performed live. There's a singer
named Alec Beaton who performs it on the Scottish Highland games circuit,
and a lot of people even think he wrote, but that isn't so.

If you mean the one John sang, Dave Mallett wrote it. Same guy that wrote
"You Say The Battle Is Over"

Speaking of Dave Mallett....if you ever get a chance to hear him in
concert...run quickly and by a ticket. He was recommended to me by a
pen-pal in Massachusetts about two years ago and I finally got to see
him perform a couple of weeks ago. It was awesome. He isn't a
"JohnDenver Substitute" but he has his own style and he is a baritone
and not a tenor...but he is good. I think he is better in concert than
on his CDs. They just don't quite capture his enthusiasm for
performance. He reminded me more of Gordon Lightfoot than John Denver
actually. The lyrics to his songs are wonderful.

Mea culpa. You're right, of course. Bryan Bowers wrote "Berkeley
Woman," which appears on the same alabum as "Garden Song" ("JD"). It was
so late, I must've gotten my eyes and the liner notes crossed.

I heard the one about Gary Hart when John did a concert in London at the

I don't believe there are any "releases" that have these songs. I think the
only way to get them would be if someone made a recording at a live concert
for their own use. I, too, heard the Gary Hart song twice in different
cities (Evansville, Indiana and Park City, Utah); but I don't have a
recording nor the words. I was never aware that John did The Scotsman.
Bryan Bowers is probably best known for that one. If you'd like a copy of
that in either Real Audio or .mp3 format, e-mail me.

Here are the lyrics someone sent me a while back:

BALLAD OF GARY HART

Who's that running down the alley in the dark of Friday night
As he zippers up his trousers in the inky-slinky light
Why of course its good ole Gary leapin' over someone's fence
Yes it's good old Gary Hart, I wouldn't keep you in suspense

He likes going out to parties, he likes being in Rolling Stone
And he ran things for McGovern, so I guess we should have known
He likes warm and willing women, he likes being where they are
He couldn't sing, he couldn't dance but he just had to be a star

CHORUS:

So he went into the politics game
Yes he went into the politics game
Warren Beatty told him "Looky, you can get a lot of nooky
if you get into the politics game"

When he made it to the Senate Gary started making hay
Gary started making nearly everything that came his way
He liked takin' a position, but when all was said and done
Gary's favorite position was the missionary one

Kennedy was Gary's hero and he studied him with care
How he stood and how he walked and even how he wore his hair
But the thing that moved him most and made him swear he'd never fail
If he made it to the White House think of all the chicks he'd nail

CHORUS:

So he went into the politics game
Yes he went into the politics game
Warren Beatty told him "Looky, you can get a lot of nooky
if you get into the politics game"

(Spoken)
Well, he met her at a party and her name was Donna Rice
She was Gary's kind of woman, she was pure Miami Vice
She thought he was Gary Collins and could get her on TV,
She suggested Monkey Business and the rest is history

(Singing again)

When they caught him making whoopie and the campaign had to cease
Gary went into seclusion, he just had to find some peace
He's been out in Colorado since I can't remember when,
But he must be gettin' horny 'cause he's running once again

CHORUS

Yes, he's running in the politics game
He's running in the politics game
Warren Beatty told him "Looky, you can get a lot of nooky
if you get into the politics game."

I have a tape of a radio phone-in where someone asks John about that,
saying he had heard him sing it at a concert. At first John doesn't know
what the guy is talking about, then he realises what song it is but is
quite certain that he has never sung it himself. He tells the guy he is
mistaken.

ROFLOL!!! I wish I had heard him sing that song.. I don't know what the
melody for it is, but it seems to fit really nicely to "Turkey in the
Straw"..... LOL That is so funny! (And wouldn't those who think of John as
only the "Sunshine Kid" be surprised at this one!)

Thanks for the chuckles!!

Peace,
Lorrie

I have a copy of that "Gary Hart" song. I'll try to make a wav of it and post
it to a web page for those who'd like to hear it. Give me some time and I'll
post the URL for you.
