Hello Family,

I have a trivia question for you....

What is the difference between the original release of the ALBUM "Rocky
Mountain High" and later releases of the ALBUM "Rocky Mountain High?"

I'll explain how I know this because I don't think it will give away anything.
When I was growing up, my sisters and I would share our JD albums. We'd
usually listen together anyway. One would get one album for Christmas and
another would get a different album and so on, and we just pooled our
collection. Well, when I went away to college, I decided to start my very own
collection, and in so doing bought a later release of "Rocky Mountain High,"
and there was something different about it.

Any album collectors out there know the answer to this one.

I'll post the answer this weekend provided nothing drastic happens in my life
which at this point is questionable :((((((

Peace,
Tricia

>What is the difference between the original release of the ALBUM >"Rocky

The original folds open and had a photo of the band and lyrics on the inside.
John is wearing a t-shirt that says, "Be Kind to Animals, Kiss a Beaver". Being
the naive kid that I was, I had to have a t-shirt that said that because John
had one (mine even has a beaver on it). My mother even let me wear it. It
wasn't until several years later that I found out what the connotation of
"beaver" was. How embarrassing. And then I was "shocked" that John would be
wearing it. What a guy... Thanks John! :-)

Releases in later years did not fold.

So did I get it right? Do I win a prize? ;-)

Well, obviously some of you folks were not participating in the "How tall was
John" thread!! I don't know whether it makes me older or younger than you but
at the time of the t-shirt, we all knew exactly what he meant! It wan't
offensive, it was funny! Remember that was back in the days when we had all
kinds of terms that our parents didn't know the meaning of (I remember
discussions of "balling" they did not understand. Of course, that's back when
parents were much more naive.)

I don't know, maybe it makes me an immoral person, but I love[d] it when John
did or said something risquee or slightly off-color; it made him normal!! That
goody-goody image was only an image. And don't kid yourself, folks - do you
really believe that he did not intend a marijuana reference in 'passing a pipe
around' or rocky mountain high? Sure it has a bigger meaning, but the reference
was clear. For anyone who might have a problem with it now, just remember that
was the times we lived in; marijuana was widely accepted and we were too young
and naive to see that it could be a problem. I love him for his being a part of
his world and his generation, and for being a part of creating it. John can
kiss my beaver any time!!

Okay, am I kicked out of the group yet?

The UK release never did fold :-( I only ever saw the US one once (before I
understood the connotation of beaver - it is not used in that sense here).
Would love to have a copy, just for the cover!

Kennon, I have to agree with you: I thought it was off-color as well. And
that's just putting it mildly. Some things are just better not said. What a
shame if a member of John's family were to have read that statement.

I don't agree with all of your posts KB but you have a point here. Didn't
you know it was PC to discuss male anatomy (especially JD's here in this
ng) but you can get sued by an employee if you discuss "Seinfeld" rhyming
words to her by simply pointing them out in a dictionary? I don't think
it's disrespect for the deceased. It's just PC to engage in locker room
talk about men but when men do the same toward women it's "harassment".
Wouldn't be surprised if these were the same type of folks who thought what
Billy did "was a private matter"! :) Must be an over active hormone
problem.

By the way, are you related to Nid? He seems to be MIA and I was beginning
to see his sense of logic and sometimes yours. I guess that makes me on
the 10 Most Wanted list in this ng. Whoa . . . just felt the flames of
"hate" come down on me from this group.

Hey JB!

Check out my response to KB! Not only a shame if JD's family reads it but
a shame we have to read it especially in the context of a private dialogue
between 2 or 3 members of this ng. I guess some of the "girls" here have
not gotten past their adolescent obsessions about John. Funny, I grew out
of it by age 13. Guess I'm abby-normal. Whatcha think, JB?

Where's Nid these days? Seems he's MIA.

Ok Tricia....let's hear the drum rolls...the original LP I have has the
original RCA logo with the cute little doggie "listening to his master's

The original LP would have the boring label on it. Later releases had the
black label. But this would not be something unique to the Rocky Mountain High
album.

How about that the original you had to pull the record out from the inside of
the fold and subsequent releases you pulled the record out from the outside,
the more usual way.

Yikes - I guess I did offend some of you - sorry! To me using the word "kiss" a
beaver was kind of innocent. If it had been a term more hard core sexual,
maybe... And, sure, I think what's good for the goose is good for the gander. I
don't care if the sexes are reversed in this type of context but I do think
"kiss a beaver" is a LOT different than "lick my dick" (sorry - I'm just
quoting). A kiss can be a peck on the cheek; it's a showing of affection and it
connotes a sweet, soft gesture. The other phrase is overtly sexual, suggestive
of lust only. It is hardly innocent or affectionate.

Oh, well. Much ado about nothing, really - don't you think?

surely john's album picture with "be kind to animals, kiss a beaver
today" is on the margins today - perhaps not so in the 70's. it was, in
a way, a good contrast with his "squeeky-clean" image the press loved to
tar him with.

that was john: innocent, fun, boyish energy, and in the promiscuous 70's
this t-shirt was close enuf to mainstream appropriate.

what concerns me is the "Toledo Ohio" song on his "Evening with John
Denver" CD -- where this time, i think, john really went over the realm
of appropriate... but hey, he was, after all, human, and subject to bad
judgment at times, right?

John told about having song that IN Toledo one time (he said he wasn't thinking
clearly) and there were a group of ladies waiting for him back stage. He said
he did manage to get back in their good graces, but wasn't specific on how he
accomplished that.

I remember he told this story when "Evening with John Denver" aired on TV. I
recorded it with a little cassette tape player I had and played it to death!

I remember John saying that it was just meant in fun like Forest Lawn and
other silly songs, but the people of Toledo got so upset he wasn't gonna
sing it again. And the Smothers Brothers (my second fav entertainers in
the world) have gotten away with worse than that.

Personally
It is not my favorite..., I've had no problem with not being a beauty, but
being called a dog a time or two, I skip over that song, itjust does't make

In the last concert I saw John in (Sept 16, 1996 in Spokane, WA), he sang
"Saturday Night In Toledo Ohio" and told the story of how he sang it in Toledo
and the mayor invited him to come back and visit Toledo. John took him up on
his offer and came to visit and hear whatever is Toledo's real song. John told
us he still thought HIS version was better.

Took me a long long time before I got that little joke. Couldn't
figure out why John cracked up every time he sang it .

You could take it to mean those cute little dam-building animals.

Wonder why he didn't say "wove and wet wove?"

Now Pam, no need to curse on the internet (hee, hee). I know this is real
dumb, but when that record album came out, I was fairly young (or should
I say immature), and I really thought it meant "those cute little
dam-building animals". No words are safe to use anymore. Such a pity.
Underlying concepts, vague ideas, and double meanings in statements
don't bother me. They remind me of John's philosophy of how a statement
can take on several meanings as do so many lines in his songs. It makes
life more interesting when one has to think a little and use one's
imagination. Lorraine

Okay, my husband laughs himself sick because I seldom "get" things. I'm really
unsure about this, so maybe someone would explain privately? Yes, I know he meant
Live and Let Live, but I thought it was just cutsie, kinda like the way Puddy Tat
speaks. Ummm, what aren't I understanding here??? :-)

I get it! I get it! I should also change the "w" on "weighed" to an "L". Guess
I am an innocent, after all. ROFL belatedly.

Beaver was also used in the '70's (and probably now) by cber's to identify a female.
Just when did it jump from being a definition for dam-building animals to other
things?
