For the newbies here, could someone post the story about how John's toes
came to be missing? I don't remember enough to post.

As I underrstand it and I could be wrong. Gee I hate when that happens!!!!!!
John got into an argument with his Dad about the way he was cutting the lawn.
He then continued cutting it barefooted and ran the lawnmower over his right
foot amputating one toe and most of another on the right side of his right
foot. He was angry at his father for some time over that but he was the one
pushing the lawnmower!!!!!!!! It was quite a trauma for a young kid. Can you
imagine looking down on all that blood and gore!!!!!!!!!! EWWWWW. I think I
got this right. Hollie Darlin', How was that foot doing? LOL Sue

When he was 18 a lawn mower made mulch out of two of them.

All by itself? It just said to itself - self, I think I will make mulch out of
the Deutschendorf kid's toes today. Things have been really slow here in
Texas!!!! Beats watching the grass grow? sue

How did he manage to take the toes on the right side of his right foot off?
Seems like the lawnmower would have had to be in an awkward position for him to
do that. I never heard this version before, Sue. All John says in his book is
it was a terrible thing that happened.

One's big toe is on the left side of the right foot and he still had that. It
was his little toe and the one next to it and those are on the right side of
the right foot. I just looked at mine but yours might be different. Sue

Where on the foot do you think the little toe and the next toe are? I looked
down at my foot and they were on the right and it is simple to take them off
with a lawn mower. The story appeared in an interview I read a long time ago

I have six on one foot. Does that make me different? I have no middle toe. I
guess I have two middle toes.

Oh that is kinda neat. I only have 5 toes on my right foot and they seem to be
in the right place as far as I can tell. I just thought of something. You
could have given John your extra toe and then he would only have had a half a
toe missing! ROFL But it wouldn't have matched I guess but you are so petite
that your middle toe (one of them) would have been a little toe to him. OH
well time to get a life here. How tall did you say he was again? Sue

OK I can live with that. That makes sense . I have a picture showing the
missing toes, no that is not right, cause I have no picture of severed toes.
Let's try again. I have a picture showing his foot without the toes under
consideration and I see now that as usual you are correct. He really isn't
missing all of any toes now that I look closely. So I guess he chopped off the
inside of his right foot! At least give me credit for knowing where toes
belong! I am very proud of that! I am so often wrong even when looking at
something right on. OK got it Christine and Tricia - no big toe and no part
of next toe on right foot
It reminds me of a true story in my family. I had a German grandfather who
was very obstinate for lack of a better word - several come to mind. He had an
electric lawn mower. He was always running over the cord and severing it. So
his wife, my grandmother, who was very practical said " Stanley if you do that
again I will make you use a push mower!!! So the next time my grandfather was
about to run over the cord he reached down under the running lawnmower and
pulled the cord away. Off came a finger with it. Now this is the absolute
truth. My grandfather died at 89 and when he died he had two thumbs and a
little finger and a ring finger total on his hands and quite a few stubs.
Every so many years he would reach down and pull on that cord and yep, another
finger would be history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sue

Hi Hollie,

I'm one of those rare birds with MacIntosh, but perhaps your computer will
have something similar. There's a thingie called "Multiple Scan Display"
by which you can change the size of the image on your screen. It has all
sorts of numbers like 640 x 480, 1024 x 768, 1152 x 870. The smaller the
number, the larger the image. So try to find a "preferences" column
somewhere and select larger numbers.

Good luck! Gloria

It's really easy, or should be. Go to Control Panel (either from My Computer or
Start>Settings>Control Panel), doubleclick on Display and select the Settings tab.
Then you can change your screen resolution with the slider at the bottom right.
You may have to restart your computer. Mine works best at 800 x 600.

Hope this helps!

I remember when I first saw the pic on AspenKate's site. At
first I swore John was wearing nothing except the jacket. I was
SHOCKED!!! Then when I clicked on it, I saw he was wearing
shorts, which I should have figured. Still, it's a good photo,
no fake smiles, no posing, just a young John Denver playing his
guitar, very informal.

I found a very sexy photo of John on the beach recently with a
tan as dark as bronze metal, probably taken sometime in the mid
to late 70s. I think his toes were hidden in the sand (probably
on purpose?)

Hi, Laura

The song he was singing was something about "Ladies love to dance," not "Sing

Gee I hate when that happens!!!!!! John got into an argument with his Dad about the way he was cutting the lawn. He then continued cutting it barefooted and ran the lawnmower over his right foot amputating one toe and most of another on the right side of his right foot. He was angry at his father for some time over that but he was the one pushing the lawnmower!!!!!!!! It was quite a trauma for a young kid. Can you imagine looking down on all that blood and gore!!!!!!!!!! EWWWWW. I think I got this right. Hollie Darlin', How was that foot doing? LOL Sue

You are correct sir my mother was one of his best friends in HS at the time and has a great pick with her next to him and his foot is all bandaged up. It was his right big toe and a very small nick on the one next to it.
I heard him tell the story personally as he was a very humble and just a good person. He was very humbled by the event.
Yes he was mowing barefoot minus the arguement part. He was however told by his dad not to mow barefoot. LOL

Talk about newbies here! I am definitely a newbie. Fourteen years later and only now I wake up and smell the roses - just because of John Denver. I have searched and searched for the longest time and I think I have found the photo you are all talking about. He is sitting on the ground on some sort of a thin cushion while holding his 12 string guitar in his hands. He is wearing shorts and it looks like there is a hole in them. There is a ' necklace' round his neck and he is sitting cross-legged with his right leg tucked in under his left. I can see his toes on his right foot, but they just look mangled, not altogether gone. The site that I have found the photo on is John Denver - One World (for all of us) [1992] http://youtu.be/FWWYxtIR2bY. I really hope that someone will read this post and answer me!
