Hellooooo.......

Has anyone heard that new song "Osama, Yo Mama"?

It's by that singer (whose name escapes me now) who did "Guitarzan" way back
when.....lololol. Gotta love that Yankee Spirit.

On a more serious note...hope everyone has a safe "Super Bowl" Sunday....( I
despise football.....I'll probly be at the mall)!!

Seems many stores in the NY area are selling out of potassium
iodide.....which is supposed to counter- act radiation sickness ::rolling
eyes:: Theres no getting away from the gloom and doom, I suppose.

But check out "Osama, Yo Mama"...put a smile on MY face!

Don't feel bad after I read your post I was saying to myself, I know who that
was, but couldn't think of his name either until I read Linda's response. He
did "Ahab the Arab" too lol. Heck he may be the one who made Osama mad in the
first place. LOL

Ahab the Arab is a family favorite of ours. My sisters and I used to
howl over it, and dance to it, lol! Heck we even have a little camel
birthday candle holder that we named Clyde. Clyde is still being used
on the next generations birthday candles. It's funny what becomes a
family tradition, isn't it?

Hi Cheri and Linda,

I listened to Ray sing this song on FOX News the other morning. Very
funny song! I believe there is a CD out with this name and also just
the single.

Ray is a real talent. He has been writing novelty and parody songs for
years and they always have a little bit (or a lot!) of truth in them. I
really love this guy and have gotten some good laughs out of some of his
songs. Back in '61' his first success was an advertising parody
"Jerimiah Peabody's Poly Unsaturated Quick Dissolving Fast Acting
Pleasant Tasting Green and Purple Pills". What a hoot! Then there was
"Ahab The Arab", "Santa Claus Is Watching You", "Gitarzan", "Along Came
Jones". And who can forget "The Streak"! My favorite song that he did
back in the 70's was "Everything Is Beautiful". I believe this was his
biggest hit. A great song with "beautiful" lyrics!

I was so glad to read in my "Coping Magazine" that I subscribe to where
he is doing very well since his 'bout with prostate cancer. It was
caught early so, his chances are very good! Ray is in his 60's.

I think I am going to get the single "Osama, Yo Mama"!

I'm so glad to hear this.... when I read (here!) about Stevens' new song I
was delighted, as I'd heard that he was seriously ill. I'm ashamed to admit
that I wasn't at all certain that he was even still with us. So glad that
he is!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Claudia,

Ray's prostate cancer was found back in 1999. Even though it wasn't showing up
during routine exams (you gentleman, know what I mean!) it wasn't detected. When
he had his PSA test done, it showed it was elevated to 4.8, which is not really
high, as some consider 4 still in the normal range. Anyway, they did a biopsy
and it was found on the first biopsy. Sometimes they have to do more than one
biopsy to find the cancer. My husband had to have two biopsies before it was
finally located. Anyway, Ray was fortunate and it was located on the first
one. Most men do not get prostate cancer until they are much older and Ray's
dad had it in his 80's. "Most" men "will" get prostate cancer and if they live
long enough, but Ray was in his early 60's. Never good for a man to be in his
40's, 50's or 60's with this. He opted for surgical removal (my husband opted
for radioactive seed implants) and Ray is doing fine. My husband is doing fine,
too.

Here is a quote that is in my Coping Magazine that Ray made and it speaks
volumes about him:

"Borrowing words from his award-winning song, Ray Stevens reminds us that
"Everything is beautiful in its own way." When asked if that applies to cancer,
he replies with a gutsy laugh, "That applies to everything."

I am with you, Claudia, and I am so glad that Ray Stevens is still around. I
hope he will write many more very funny, as well as, "beautiful" songs! We need
the laughs and we need the "beauty" too!

Found the lyrics on a website:

Osama - Yo' Mama

(You In A Heap O' Trouble Boy)
Osama - yo' mama didn't raise you right
When you were young she must have wrapped yo' turban too tight
She should have kept you home on those arabian nights
It's plain to see - you need some therapy

Osama - yo' mama could have done a lot better
Though I bet every day you did somethin' to upset her
By the way, we got an answer to your anthrax letter
New York City's where it's from - it's called a smart bomb

Chorus

And I can hear yo' mama sayin' now, "You in a heap o' trouble son
Now just look what you've done
Saw you on TV with yo' gun
Mercy sakes, I can't do a thing wit'cha, told ya dubyah's gonna git'cha"

And I can just hear dubyah sayin', "You in a heap 'o trouble boy
And I don't think you will enjoy
Our game of search and destroy
We got your terror right here, and we gon' run it up yo' rear"

Osama - yo' mama didn't teach you how to act
You've crossed the line too far this time, there ain't no turnin' back
You're startin' to remind us of another maniac
Yeah, you know who - he started World War II

Osama - yo' mama didn't teach you to behave
Now they say you're hangin' with the bats in a cave
Well, pullin' off that sneak attack was not too brave
Kinda makes us remember - the 7th of December

Chorus

And I can hear yo' mama sayin' now, "You in a heap o' trouble son
Now just look what you've done
Saw you on TV with yo' gun
Mercy sakes, I can't do a thing wit'cha, told ya dubyah's gonna git'cha"

And I can just hear dubyah sayin', "You in a heap 'o trouble boy
And I don't think you will enjoy
Our game of search and destroy
We got your terror right here, and we gon' run it up yo' rear"

Tag Lines

Osama yo' karma's really got you in a jam
But that's just what you get - when you mess with Uncle Sam

Osama the Taliban is history
Nobody wants to see you startin' World War Three

Osama you know the al-Qaida won't last
Osama, just like you, it's future's in the past

Osama you should've read your Nostradamus
Now all your friends are sayin' "Please don't bomb us"

Im sitting here with my Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and under Ray
Stevens are listed:-

'70 Every thing is beautiful
'71 Bridget the midget
'72 Turn your radio on
'74 The streak
'75 Misty
'75 Indian love call
'77 In the mood

It would appear he wasn't that big over here the streak being his only No1

Of interest is the foot note:- "In the mood doesnot feature Ray Stevens as a
conventional vocalist, but as a group of chickens. In the US he billed
himself on this record as Henhouse five plus two.

but then you all probably knew that anyway.

Okay! Heard through the grapevine that you were discussing my ole
buddy Ray so I thought I'd jump in and tell you about him.

He was born Ray Ragsdale in Albany, Ga. His first band was called
"The Barons" and his first hit was a song called "Silver Bracelet".
He moved to Atlanta and changed his name to Stevens and then began the
string of comical hits.

My favorite of his is a song called "Mr. Businessman" that was
somewhat popular and in a more serious vein.

And I have NOT heard this latest song! Guess I'm not listening to the
right stations! Guess I'll have to try and find it at Wal-Mart!

I want to know how you guys know all this stuff about all these people and
their music? I guess I paid no attention to the backgrounds of musicans I
didn't know. It is so bad with me that I went to a concert at the Georgia
Mountain Fair a few years ago and I was enjoying the music when the entertainer
said he was from Humboldt, Tenn. Now I grew up there and it is a town of less
than 2000. He further said that his mother taught piano in the town. Now I
took piano for years there. Turned out we went to school together and his real
name was Billy and he had become a famous country western star. I will let you
guess who he was. I live in a bubble I think. But that is a great story

Going to school with them helps! :O) I also went to school with
Toni Tennille of the Captain and Tennille after my parents divorced
and we moved to Montgomery, Alabama. She was tall and so poised even
as a 5th, 6th, 7th grader. We also went to summer camp together.

She was not "popular" at the time. Her father owned furniture stores
and the family was affluent. The highlight of my young life was being
invited to her birthday party at the country club.

She's missing the tip of one index finger but I can't remember how it
happened. And surely everyone knows that she was the Beach Boys ONLY
female pianist way back when.

Hi Dot!

I think somebody sent me the subject song lyrics! It's funny!

Ray Stevens is a riot. I bought one of his CDs that has "The Haircut
Song" of which he was one of the co-writers along with Mike Neun.
It's about a guy who goes all over the country getting various types
of haircuts ... and depending on the type of haircut and in which part
of the country he's in, he gets harrassed accordingly!

Mike Neun is also a wonderful musical commedian in his own right. He
opened for John at Harrah's in 1986 and sang that song along with his
own "Grandma Was A Gambler" ... another riotious song! There's a
line in the "Haircut" song that goes ...."I'm tough ... I'm a logger!"
So John makes a cute comment having worked summers in a logging camp
... the exact wording escapes me right now but I've got it at home.
But it was so funny and John had this silly grin on his face!

I don't know if Mike ever tours but if he's ever in your area, you've
gotta see him!

Speaking of funny songs..
anyone remember "Big Bad Bruce" ?

I still remember a few lines..

At the beauty salon every morning at 10,
Big Bruce arrived and kinda tiptoed in
he was 6'3 and weighed 205 (?)
blah blah..

and then the salon catches on fire and Bruce runs out.. culminating in..
"Mercy I forgot my purse"

WHAT is that? <G> It's from long ago...

LOL, well...there's Jessica Grove, she had a small blub in People magazine,
when she debuted on Broadway as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. I worked with
her, her Mom (who's name escapes me), and her Papa, Vili (never learned how to
spell his name) at the Shakespeare company I spent my summers with.

Then, there are my friends, John Dempsey and Dana Rowe, they wrote the hit
musical (in London, England, anyway) The Witches of Eastwick. Supposedly, my
name is in the program as "technical consultant." it's picked up a few of the
English equivalent of the Tony's. word is, next year on Broadway.

Stephen Sondheim, very nice man. one of my very favorites, as far as music is
concerned.

worked with Mickey Rooney in Miami, does that count? you know him...I think.
did some local Christmas shows when I was in High School.

and I met Ethel Merman, got to sing with her. if what she did was passable as
singing! ;-)

And the old man was on the construction crew that built Inverarry, so I got to
meet Jackie Gleason a few times. I was a kid, tho. don't remember him too
much...

ok, now that you're just THOROUGHLY impressed. any others were passing, brief
meetings.

giggle...I fail, miserably, don't I? does meeting Lynyrd Skynyrd count? ;-)
