I'll make one last try to convience everyone that John was 5'81/2"
tall: Check out the Gabrielle Gramaglia Tribute to John Denver. Its on
the alt. John Denver link. There are some beautiful pictures of John.
One was taken on his honeymoon in Hawaii...standing next to Cassie.
Unless she is 5'10" (and she isn't...she is 5'6") you should be able to
compare their heights and see that John was around 5'8"(barefooted) I
know this because he wasn't wearing his boots with his tropical shirt on
the beach! Not even John would do that...he's an "honarary Texan, you
know" Did you also know that John lost part of his right foot in a
lawnmower accident as a kid...twekve years old, I think. LH

Ok, I checked it out. Since I really don't care if John was 5'4" or 6'4"
and for the pure fun of carrying on a "discussion", now the question
becomes: How do you know how tall Cassie is? Did you read it someplace?
We've read all different heights for John in many different places. In that
honeymoon picture, how do you know she's not standing on tiptoe? Or not
standing in a hole in the sand? Perhaps she's barefooted and she has shoes
on. Maybe he's standing on a rock.

Oh, all that is just in fun. If you say he's 5'8 1/2, it's just fine by
me. Why shouldn't everyone have an opinion and why not a little
good-natured fun? You know, I don't have the foggiest idea in the world how
tall he was.

Yeah Linda, I thought she was shorter than that!! How DID you find out how tall
she was? And what ever did happen to that ugly shirt? Are his glasses in the
Smithsonian? Hmmmmm...

I saw her once close up, and I'm sure she was shorter than me. I'm 5' 4".
This was in 1986, soon after John and Cassy met, when he brought her here
on tour.

Slight exaggeration - it was only two toes that he lost! Also, I believe
he said in his book he was 18 when it happened.

Does any one know how tall Annie is? and how much taller John was than
her? mzybe that would answer the question once and for all........

Yes, I am also wondering why if John was 6' tall he needed a pillow to
sit on while flying his plane. Supposedly the person who built this
plane, was similar in stature to John. Any thoughts on this from the
pilots who fly these planes.

Here's some information that may help everyone solve this dilemma once and for
all. I stood beside him for a picture last summer after the Wolf Trap concert.
He had his arm around me, and I noted when I looked toward him that my lips
were in a direct line with his left nipple. (sigh...) Now, I'm 5 feet tall, and
the distance from my mouth to the top of my head is 7&1/2 inches. If anyone
out there knows the distance from his left nipple to the top of his head, we
can calculate his height exactly!

Hope this helps! LOL.

ROTFL!! Now aren't we getting a bit carried away with this height thing?! LOL

After correcting for the slight lean produced by him having his arm around you,
and the slight drop in your chin as you (unconsciously) move your face toward his
chest, and allowing for the possibility that one of you was standing on a raised
part of the floor (accidently, no doubt), then I believe I have come up with an
equation which will allow us to solve for John's height.

Behold: (Gingrland's height - 7.5" + pi r2 / John's nipple to crown of head
distance) - tan(floor angle) + sin(shoe height) + arcsin(dirt on floor angle)=
John Denver's height in 1997 while at Wolf Trap

Now keep in mind that this equation is only valid for that day, at that time. Any
other place and time would introduce different variables, and, therefore, negate
the validity of the equation.

Please turn in your answers by Mon. at 5:00pm. Late answers will not receive full
credit.

Meg,
As another math teacher, I assume that you also must spend most of your
time teaching trig to high school students. Otherwise you wouldn't have
been able to come up with that wonderful "problem" which will of course
settle the height question once and for all. I will be sure to use it
as the "performance assessment" type question on my next test. My
students already get to listen to JD while they are testing....

OH NO! Now I have to start over. I forgot all about the planetary positions! I'll
just have to take another week off from work and do the whole equation over...

I would have loved to have taken that measurement!
