Can someone tell me what the name of the song Lyle sang a John's
Funeral? I'm interested in hearing the song and want to purchase the CD
it is on.
Thanks in advance!
Denise

It is called "Texas River Song" and you can find it on the 2 disc CD called
"Step Inside This House". Beautiful song and great CD. The song is a
Traditional Texas song and the songwriter is not mentioned. John and Lyle
had sung this song together, but it was not recorded and released on CD
anywhere that I know of.

Here are the words to it:

We crossed the wild Pecos
We forded the Nueces
We swum the Guadalape
An we followed the Brazos
Red River runs rusty
The Witchita clear
But down by the Brazos
I courted my dear.

Singing li, li, li, le, le, le
Lend me your hand
Li, li, li, le, le
Lend me your hand
Li, li, li, le, le, le
Lend me your hand
There's many a river
That waters the land

Now the fair Angelina
Runs glossy and gliding
The crooked Colorado
Runds weaving and winding
The slow San Antonio
Courses the plains
But I never will walk
By the Brazos again

She kissed me and she hugged me
And she called me her dandy
The Trinity's muddy
But the Brazos quick sandy
She kissed me and she hugged me
And she called me her own
But down by the Brazos
She left me alone

Now the girls of Little River
They're plump and they're pretty
The Sabine and the Sulphur
Hold beauties a 'many
The banks of the Neches
There are girls by the score
But down by the Brazos
I'll wander no more.

Best,
Dot

Hi- That was the "Texas River Song". John sang that song with Lyle and so he
sang it for John at the Aspen service.

Lyle Lovett sang the "Texas River Song" at John's memorial service in Aspen.
Said he and John had performed it together but I forget where.

Believe it was at Red Rocks, Pat, but not 100 percent on that.

If it was at Red Rocks, anyone know what year it was? I hate to think I
missed out on that.

I remember reading on a Lyle Lovett message board (I also love Lyle!) that
John did a walk-on encore during Lyle's concert at Red Rocks (and I almost
went to that!)... I think the year would have been 96, possibly 95. I
kicked myself for months for not taking the trip out there. I was also
surprised to find out that they knew each other, since I adored them both.
Lyle is wonderful, had the chance to meet him years back - but, of course,
he's no John Denver!

Anyone else have more info?

Barb

Barb,

Thanks for the info. I was living in Colorado then, but never heard
anything about it. Rats! Sorry I missed out. I would have loved to hear
them sing together.

I saw in a recent issue of the Denver Post that Lyle Lovett was to be
performing soon in the Aspen area (if I remember this correctly?).

Back when Lyle was married to Julia Roberts, he did a concert in Aspen
at the Wheeler. In an article about Lyle and Julia in People Mag, there
was a photo of Lyle, Julia, and John on stage at the Wheeler. John and
Lyle sang together that night, too.

I love Lyle Lovett's singing, Barb. I hope to be able to see him in concert
one of these years!! Did you get the CD "Step Inside This House"??

Dot,

I don't have that CD - what's your favorite song on it? Maybe that will
ring a bell. I'm so glad to hear other people like Lyle, I've been told
that he's an acquired taste. I went to see him in concert in either '92 or
'93 (pre-Julia!) and became an instant fan. He was so easy going and
brilliant, and I have to say he did remind me of John. After the show, we
were walking to the car, and he stepped out of his bus as we passed by. He
just started chit-chatting with us, as if we were old friends. My husband
(who is a HUGE fan) was so nervous and so obvious about it - Lyle couldn't
help teasing him. He flipped out so bad at one point that he got in the car
(which was very nearby) and started to drive off without me. Lyle thought
that was hilarious.

Did you see the episode of Dharma & Greg he was on?? It was too funny!

Peace,

Barb

It is a two disc CD set and has lots of songs on it, Barb. It has 21 songs
altogether on it. One is "Texas River Song" that he sang at John's Aspen
Memorial. This is a CD devoted to all Texas writers and it is an absolute must
for any Lyle fan. I love all of the songs on this CD and Lyle is just fantastic
on it. One of my favorites is "Flyin' Shoes" that is a Townes Van Zandt song.
Another is "If I Needed You" which was written by written by Townes Van Zandt
also. *All* the songs are wonderful and brilliantly done by Lyle. A must have!

That is a funny story about your hubby and you meeting Lyle! Sounds like it
would have made good material for a TV show! LOL!

Best,
Dot

One that I like is one that my friend Kevin Yeargin sings. I can never
remember the name of it, but it's about a boat, and some of the words are
"If I had a horse, I'd ride him in my boat".....

Anyone know the name of it?

Thanks!

It's "If I Had A Boat" and it's on the Lyle Lovett, Live In Texas CD.

John performed with Lyle in 1996 at Red Rocks. Great show.

One of my favorite Lyle songs is God Will. Where the girl asks the singer for
forgiveness and the singer replies..

God Will but I won't
And that's the difference
between me and God.

Terrifically funny line, and so true to human nature.

I love just about anything that Lyle sings and a few of my favorite songs of his
(besides Texas River Song) are "Don't Touch My Hat", "That's Right (You're Not
From Texas)", "Long Tall Texan", "The Road To Ensenada". All these are on the CD
"The Road To Ensenada".

The song "Don't Touch My Hat" has a funny line that says:

"If its her you want
I don't care about that
You can have my girl
But don't touch my hat"

That sounds like a true Texan! LOL!

Best,
Dot
