Ran out to do some errands and heard some national "country" news on our
local country station.

Vince Gill wants to do a Tribute Album to John Denver. The idea came
about with the tremendous response to his singing "Country Roads" at a
recent concert. Vince wants to get other "country" musicians to
contribute as well.

It touches my heart that Vince Gill wants to do this. As we all know,
John was greatly criticized by a large protion of the "country music"
family, but obviously NOT by all of them. It is good to know that
Vince's heart beats with ours and I believe in his honesty of the impact
John's death has had on him.

This is great news. I just wrote to Milt Okun suggesting this very thing.
Hope they get in touch with each other and make it happen.

When they were talking about making this album they mentioned Clint
Black and they also said something about Garth Brooks singing Annies
Song.

E-mail Vince Gill and encourage him to go through with his idea and
thank the man.

I didn't have Vince Gill's e-mail address. I found the place to e-mail
him by going to High Lonesome Sound. It is his web page but they don't
post his e-mail address. They have a place where you can click to send
him e-mail.

I heard it on the "country news" which was on my local country station
but was during a national type syndicated broadcast. So I don't know if
it is set in stone or just talk.

I think I remember somebody posted to the newsgroup that Vince Gill
already DID a tribute to John at Vince's concert a few days after he
died. They said that Vince said goodbye to John with tears, and played
Take Me Home, Country Roads-- said he would miss John.
I don't know if there is any more to it than that.

I don't know about you-all, but I kinda thought the Garth-sung songs
"The River" and "The Dance" would have been lovely sung by JD - kind
of in the songs-he-might've-wished-he-had-written category. What do
you think?

I will sail my vessel, 'till the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind, these waters are my sky
How will I reach my destination, if I never try?
So I will sail my vessel, 'till the river runs dry.

I could've missed the pain, but then I would've missed the dance.

I would like to hear Collin Raye interpret one of John's songs - "Perhaps
Love" would be a wonderful choice. Raye has a simply beautiful voice - and
he makes magic with meaningful, poetic lyrics.

John Berry was at WE Fest in MN 2 years ago when JD was there & he said
that he was a great fan of JD's. He also said that they do sing 'Annie's
Song', but since he was there, that they wouldn't do it out of respect for
JD. I think that he would be great singing any of JD's song along with
Vince & Clint.

I also think at the new release of 'Christmas for Cowboys' will be great,
but why not 'For You', 'Me & My Uncle', 'A Song For All Lovers', 'Is It
Love', 'The Gift You Are', & 'I Watch You Sleeping'???? What do you Think??

Take Care & EMail Soon!

I agree this would be a great collection. JD and Clint Black did a
Christmas Show together a few years back and CB referred to JD as sir
throughout. I think that shows where JD stood in CB's mind. I would
like to see a group effort on What One Man Can Do..dedicated to JD...or
if not a group effort then probably Garth. I think it would be neat
though to open it to not only country artists but even actors and any
other performers who would like to join in and have this huge chorus of
people singing this song to him about him. I think he would be very
flattered and touched, blushing probably.

My two cents.

I think Vince Gill, Suzy Boggus, and Clint Black would not only be the best
vocalist/country artists to do the proper justice to John's songs, but are
also the proper kind of people to do his songs with passion. Song writing
wise, there is no question that Clint Black writes the most similar to John
when it comes to the non-country songs he sings and writes. And though I like
all three of them, especially Suzy and Clint, none of them are in the same
league as John when it comes to vocals and expressing themselves through
songwriting.
Just my opinion.

Hi,
In addition to Vince Gill, Clint Black and also John Berry, I would like
to see Kathy Mattea, she was also a part of that Christmas special. A few
years ago, at Westfest in Colorado Hal Ketchum did a terrific job of
Trail of Tears. That same year Michael Martin Murphy sang Ponies and Boy
From The Country.
It would also be great to have John's band, Pete, Chris, Alan and
Michito as part ot it.

Used to be just Michael Murphy. Think mid-1970's... his album "Blue
Sky, Night Thunder"... singles "Carolina in the Pines" and "Wildfire"
(I believe he performed this one with John Denver and others at a
hunger benefit concert somewhere).

His late '70's album "Swans Against The Sun" is, IMHO, as good as
anything JD ever did... "High County Caravan" might be said to be a
blend of the poetic themes of "Rocky Mountain High" and "Sweet
Surrender"; "Cherokee Fiddle" a tune that even today pops into my head
at odd intervals...

While nobody can *replace* John Denver, I can't think of any other
artist who could as legitimately "inherit" his musical legacy...

I think that it's great that Vince Gill wants to do a loving tribute to
John Denver. He should go for it because Vince Gill is a talented singer.
You see, I have been a great admirer of John Denver and was shocked
when I heard about his tragic plane accident. I will always cherish John
Denver's memories because he really cared about his fans, animals and the
environment. His songs have touched my heart and soul and will always
miss him. Also, I do agree that Clint Black would be a good choice to do
a tribute to John Denver, because Clint's voice is similar to John's.

Tht's nice that Vince Gill wants to do a tribute, but I for one, would
rather hear songs written and done in tribute to John, rather than
someone else singing John's songs. In my mind, nobody can do John's
songs like John did, and the only way I want to hear them is as they
were sung by John. I think it would just be great if they did something
like Lyle Lovett did at the memorial--tell a little story about a
meeting with John, or a time they performed with John, and sing a song
that reminds them of him and what he stood for. Maybe they could even
write a song in tribute to him. But in my opinion, John's songs sung by
anyone else just don't have the impact they did when he sang them.
They're not just words and melodies, but his spirit and soul emanating
through them. That can't be captured by anyone else. Maybe a Vince
Gill fan wouuld buy such a tribute, but not I.

Not surprisingly, as JD sang on 3 of the tracks - his duet on Swans Against
The Sun is beautiful, and Mansion on the Hill always makes me feel sad as I
think of John living alone at Starwood.

Remember Boy from the Country is a Michael Martin Murphy Song and he also
recorded Ponies I believe I know Johnson (Michael?) who was in Denver
Boise and Johnson has recorded Ponies. He should be part of this since
they used to work together. I think EmmyLou Harris should be too, she
was a close friend, and had worked with him on 2 projects at least.
Kathy Mattea would be best for Country Roads partially because she's from
WV. Several years ago when WV flooded bad JD and KM were in Charleston
to do a benefit concert together. KM was on time JD flew in after a show
elsewhere or something cause he only was there for the last 1/2 hour of
the show (a 2 hour broadcast).

FYI JD and MMM were friends both attended either Texas Tech or same HS, I
think they knew each other way back. JD performed on Swans Against the

Has anybody heard Dave Mallett? I think he would be an excellent
choice. He wrote "Garden Song". A friend in Massachusetts introduced
me to some of his other music. I think he may just be a New England

While I yield to no one in my admiration and love for JD's voice, I think
it would limit the value of his songs and his message if no one else could
sing them. Surly Placido Domingo and Peter, Paul, and Mary did them
justice. I'm sure other's could, too. John is not around to sing them any
more. Let us encourage any other quality singer who respects his music to
perpetuate it. Thank you, Vince Gill.

I personally think its great that other artists want to do JD's music. I
think he would be flattered, keep in mind he always got excited when
people sang along, knew the words etc.... I think he would be excited

I don’t think that performers either professional or amateur should be
discouraged from singing John’s songs. In light of John’s tragic passing, I do
think that it’s essential to keep John’s music alive and if every Clint,
Vince, or John and Mary Doe wants to honor John by playing his music, then we
should all rejoice. Surely his memory won’t be kept alive musically by the
radio stations, and it’s up to those who are truly interested such as Vince
Gill to do that on John’s (and our) behalf, since none (or at least most
aren’t) of us are in a professional position to do so. In addition, making
donations to any or all of John’s causes would be apropos for such projects.

As far as no one holding a candle to John doing his own songs, I do agree that
there’s nothing like listening to the original, however, we don’t have the
Original anymore. I used to jam with a girl who had a marvelous singing voice,
much like the Little Mermaid and a BEAUTIFUL vibrato. A guy who used to sing
and play guitar at my church could/can sing with the best of them and with
lots of passion. This guy doesn’t need a microphone as he projects very well,
and coincidently, he is a tenor. The hard part of course is the "essence" of
John, which would be thee most difficult if not most impossible to emulate.
When I play John’s songs, I try to capture every detail that I can, in order
to preserve his style. There are many people with "heavenly" voices, both male
and female who can do the honor of making sure that John’s music will continue
to "sail o’er the canyons and up to the stars".

In Loving Memory of John Denver,

John

I saw clips of it. Vince sang "Country Roads" and other opry stars
joined him on stage to sing it. It was great to have this at the opry.
He was a CMA Entertainer of the Year.
