Dear Friends:

The founders of the John Denver Monterey Bay Memorial Project, Connie Poquette,
Tricia Roegner, Rebecca Barber, Valerie Nestrick and Debra Sanderson, are
pleased to announce that we have achieved one of our goals in Pacific Grove:
the dedication of a tree and a plaque with John Denver's name on it in the
Butterfly Grove! Read on for details.

PACIFIC GROVE GRANTS TREE PLANTING AND PLAQUE AT THE BUTTERFLY GROVE IN MEMORY
OF JOHN DENVER

The weekend of May 8-9, 1999, the founders of the John Denver Monterey Bay
Memorial Project were in town for the dedication of a tree and plaque which
have been placed in the Butterfly Grove on Ridge Road at Lighthouse Avenue.

In keeping with the City of Pacific Grove's conservative outlook on memorials,
the dedication was not a media event and was attended only by those responsible
for the planting. The tree was planted by Frank Ono, City Forester on
California Arbor Day, and is the last in a series of private plantings in the
Butterfly Grove as the city has placed a moratorium on future tree planting,
pending a review of environmental studies. The new John Denver Memorial Tree
is a Monterey Cypress standing approximately 5 1/2 ft tall and is located below
the historic cottage on the property.

In addition to the tree planted in John Denver's honor, a brass plaque was
placed in the kiosk at the entry to the walking path at the grove. The plaque
reads:

The Legacy Continues...
JOHN DENVER
Still lives in our hearts

and was donated by the John Denver Monterey Bay Memorial Project in
loving and peaceful memory of our friend John.

We would like to thank the Friends of the Monarchs, and the City of Pacific
Grove for their continuing support of our endeavors in John Denver's memory.
We would also like to thank everyone who participated in last year's beach
cleanup, and we urge you to consider joining in the 1999 John Denver Memorial
Tribute and Beach Cleanup. Information will be forthcoming on the events being
scheduled.

For more information or to volunteer for October events, contact Debra
Sanderson at pixi...@aol.com

Peace,

This is wonderful news!! I love it that a Monterey Cypress was planted in a
butterfly grove, and I really love the inscription that you put on the plaque in
the kiosk.

Thanks for letting us know!

Great news! I remember the butterflies fluttering past as I sat on the
beach near the crash site last October. So beautiful. And the Grove is so
peaceful.

Peace, in John's memory,
Christine

Good job and thanks to the JDMBMP group! I visited the Monarch Garden when I was
in California in November of '97. I was on a business trip to Stockton and took
the weekend to drive to Monterrey and visit Pacific Grove. There were butterflies
in the Grove when I was there - so many that they looked like thousands of dead
leaves dangling from tree branches - I was so startled when I realized that those
"dead leaves" were in fact the Monarch butterflies I had hoped to see.

What a lovely site for a JD memorial!
